Grim way to start off this thread:

View: https://twitter.com/PlayersTribune/status/1491108157795438592

'“Gerald Williams passed away this morning after a battle with cancer. To my teammate and one of my best friends in the world, rest in peace, my brother. My thoughts and prayers are with his wife, Liliana, and their whole family.” —Derek Jeter'

I know Sox fans remember him for a different reason. Little kid me had a tough time understanding that he was not related to Bernie.

For some reason I remember him owning Randy Johnson, but then I looked up his stats and that doesn't seem to be the case.

Anyway, I definitely remember seeing him homer twice off Johnson in Seattle in 1994. So, maybe that is what I'm remembering.

Andrew Heaney gave up 5 ERs while getting just one out for the Dodgers yesterday, not gonna miss that guy one bit.

I really will not miss watching Gary catch. The occasional bombs do not outweigh the frustration of watching him behind the plate. He's got a good arm, but he's just a mess otherwise.

Yeah, I liked him and I thought he took too much flak, but I definitely will not miss him. Also I am thrilled Cashman avoided a season-long media dialogue about bringing him back or not next year.

You figure if they can sign Judge, they are going into a season with relatively low drama and maintenance. The Gary, Clint, no lefties, Gleyber at SS, Voit, and will Stanton ever start in the OF drama is behind us. I mean, we still have Boone, but can't ask for everything. It has to be much easier on a coaching staff to not have to manage so many projects.

I'm all for low drama.

I'm honestly excited to see how this season plays out with regard to much improved defense in the field and behind the dish. The pitching is potentially strong this year. I like setting the conditions on the field to try and maximize what the pitchers can do.

So much drama last year from shitty defense.

There will be plenty of offense. I'm good with defense first at SS and C.*

LFG!

* I'd also be good with another decent quality starting pitcher. The kids look good though. Just saying.

This thread could get a workout this year as Urshela and Sanchez will certainly be worth keeping track of.

That said, Sanchez is starting at DH in his first game with the Twins. And Urshela just homered in his second at bat.

Joely Rodriguez right in the middle of the Mets bullpen meltdown tonight, he came into the game up 4-0 with a runner on 1st and no one out, bottom 8, 1B, groundout, HR to Realmuto, K of Harper, and he left with two outs and NY up 4-3. Lugo gave up BB/2B/2B to the next three guys and the Mets lost 5-4, you hate to see it.

Heh, the Reds tried to use old buddy Luis Cessa as an opener against the Dodgers tonight, which went about as badly as it could, five straight hits after a Mookie fly out and a 3-0 LAD lead.

Interestingly Cessa was opening for another former Yankee system product, lefty Reiver Sanmartin who turns 26 today. If you know how he got from NY to CIN, you are a serious fan, pat yourself on the back. The answer is itt was as part of the Sonny Gray to CIN deal in Jan 2019, NY got Shed Long who they immediately flipped for Josh Stowers (who they traded last year for Odor) so they could save a 40 man spot and first round supplemental pick which ended up being TJ Sikkema, who was a tough SEC college lefty but cannot stay healthy for NY. They gave up Gray and a young and far away Sanmartin, Sanmartin got blasted last week as a SP against ATL (third career start after two late last season), but today pitched 5 scoreless after Cessa, 5 2 0 0 0 2 on 75 pitches.

So the active players who moved in both NY Sonny Gray deals are all SPs, Kaprielian for OAK (hurt again), Sanmartin for CIN and Sikkema in NY's minors. Sikkema is still 23 so he could still end up the best of those three if he can ever get healthy.

Both SPs in the BOS/TB game today were in the NY farm system from 2017-2019, JP Feyereisen and Garrett Whitlock.

Neither could crack the Yankee 40 man roster, Cashman moved JPF at the 2019 deadline for a very young player (Brenny Escanio, still just 19) and international money and didn't protect Whitlock from the rule 5 in 2020.

Both are really good now although NY has no shortage of quality pitchers, but both would clearly make the current NY roster.

Luke Voit has been terrible for SD so far, 6-42 with no HRs and 10 BBs, .481 OPS and now hurt yet again, biceps tendon.

Luke Voit off the IL today for SD, and he's hit his first two homers in a currently 5-5 game against the Cubs. The bad news is they were both solo, they were his first two of the season, and he is still OPSing just .688, but still a good day for Old Friend Luke.

If Brett Gardner is going to play again, it likely will only be for the Yankees, the team that drafted him in the third round out of the College of Charleston in 2005. And now that the Yankees seemingly have moved on from the free-agent outfielder, it appears his 14-year career might be over.

Gardner, 38, turned down a one-year, $6 million offer from the Blue Jays after the conclusion of the lockout, sources said. More recently, the Braves gauged his interest after learning outfielder Eddie Rosario would miss eight-to-12 weeks while recovering from a laser procedure to correct blurred vision and swelling in his right eye. Gardner declined to pursue the opportunity.

NY doesn’t have great OF depth so I could certainly see them signing Gardner if there is a major injury. I actually think there’s a good chance if both he and Hicks were currently FAs and NY needed to pick one, they would go with Gardner.

Paul O'Neill had his number retired. Mercy. I couldn't find a comparable Red Sox player, but I was surprised he joins the HOFers with that honor.

As a father of a Little Leaguer who was also a Yankee fan back in the 00s, I especially hated Paul O’Neill. He exhibited every bit of behavior you DON’T want kids showing on the ball field. Scowling, yelling at umpires, rolling his eyes, slamming his bat, and arguing from the dugout. Just a total and utter douchebag.

It would be similar to the Sox retiring Nomar's number, except Nomar spent the majority of his productive years with Boston while a good portion of O'Neill's productivity came with the Reds.

We talked about this earlier, but I think O'Neill getting his number retired so much later than other key members of the dynasty is because he wasn't quite as great a player and it took 20 years or so as a good Yankees broadcaster to put him over the top.

I don't think he gets his number retired without all that extra time working for the organization after he retired as a player.

I'm good with it.

Does it get retired at all if fans didn't harass LaTroy Hawkins and basically force him to switch? It feels like the Yankees weren't originally planning to do this, but they've watched the way the fanbase feels about O'Neill over the years and it sort of forced their hand.

Maybe? But I think (mostly) probably not. The Yankees don't have to retire the number in order to not give it out. Fan appreciation for O'Neill will eventually fade and they'd being able to give it out again if it wasn't retired.

But I said "mostly" because I do agree that O'Neill being a fan favorite has to be part of the equation. I mean, I don't think Hideki Matsui is going to get his number retired.

When a team wins a lot of titles, a lot of their players get honored. It's not really about individual stats, and this is coming from someone who does not care at all about this kind of thing and intentionally waited to turn on Sunday's game until the ceremony was over.

O’Neill hit 303/377/492 over nine years as a Yankee and won 5 rings. 1500 hits, 125 ops+, 27 war.

Nomar hit 323/370/553 in nine years as a Red Sox with 1300 hits, 133 ops+, 41 war.

If Nomar were an important part of 5 WS championship teams, had finished his career with the Sox and then had a 20 year broadcasting stint on NESN, I’d imagine there’d be calls to retire his number too.

Of course Sox fans don’t understand this but why would we? It’s not for us.

Wesneski made his MLB debut for the Cubs today with the following line
5.0 IP 2 H, 1 BB, 8 K, 0 R

but I am glad he is no longer a Yankee because of his views that he regularly expresses on Twitter

You should delete before someone sees a political post outside of V&N.

Wesneski/Effross was a challenge trade, a SP and a RP who are both controlled for a very long time (2027, maybe 2028 for Wesneski).

Mike Ford is playing in his 17th game with the Angels tonight. It's the most he's played for any of the eight teams he's been with this year. He's appeared in the majors with the Angels, Braves, Mariners and Giants in 2022 and also played for all four of those organizations' AAA teams.

And of course two of his three MLB HRs this season came against the Yankees.

NY fans again got to see a strong performance from the SP that got away in today’s STL/CIN game.

Nope, not STL starter Jordan Montgomery, who gave up all three runs in a 3-0 game, but CIN starter/old buddy Luis Cessa, a SP when NY originally got him from DET long ago, and who has been in the rotation in recent weeks for CIN, 5 scoreless and just one hit allowed.
