Kevin PIllar just got a hit in his 9th straight game, during which he is 16-for-31. He was released by the White Sox a few weeks after starting the season 4-for-25.

Playing 2B for the Mets tonight, he just made terrible throws trying to complete easy DPs on consecutive plays, throwing it so wildly the 1B couldn't put a glove on it either time, cost them one run in the end.

Christian Vazquez - .598 OPS last year, and ice-cold so far with a .310 OPS.
Up to .441 OPS.
Down to a .386 OPS.
Xander - .790 OPS last year, .601 this year as a second-baseman.
.550 OPS. Still a second-baseman. Maybe.
.581 OPS. Fractured Shoulder.
E-Rod - a convincing 2023 campaign of 26 starts, but yet to take the field this year.
60-day IL.
Still injured - not yet throwing.
Renfroe - .710 OPS last year (two clubs), and doing nothing (literally) for KCR so far - a .000 OPS in 4 games.

JDM - A good 2023 when healthy which was not even 3/4 of the season (.893 in 113 games). Maybe he'll play some games for the Mets soon.

Eovaldi - in JDM's boat with 25 starts and a 3.63 ERA, but healthy for an excellent post-season. His only start this year was good.

Enrique Hernandez - rebounded in 2023 for LAD, but off to a cold start this year: .413 OPS.

Feeling pretty good about my whole "I want nothing to do with him coming back" expressions this offseason.
Oh, and Justin Turner at 217/305/349. The “don’t sigh free agents” strategy is frustrating but kinda seems like the right one. Lot more misses than hits.
Iggy just beat out a throw to first in the ninth to score a run, followed by a homer by Alonso. The SNY booth talking about how happy Iggy is to be in the big leagues. The Mets are going to lose the game, as all this happened in the ninth with two outs, the Mets down 10-1 at the beginning of the inning.

Not going to go hunting for the quote, but I'm pretty sure Theo Epstein said after a few years with the Sox that if you hit more than 50% on your free agent picks you're doing very well. Words of wisdom as usual.

His ability to hit the fastball has increasingly deteriorated, and his bat speed is down to the bottom 1% of ML batters.

Also, the ChiSox sent Benny to the IL with Anchilles tendonitis today. Hopefully he can get a bunch of minor-league "rehab" ABs and sort himself out.
Wacha has a better FIP this year in KC than he did last year in SD. He's been very, very good the last two years.
Pham's still in CF, so his dWAR is dragging down his overall value. His OPS+ is 109 at the moment, but his fWAR is 0.1 after 132 ABs.
He'd be much more valuable in a corner OF spot. . .but it's not like CWS are spoiled for choice there.
(Pham's a good poster child for the Sox. His OPS+ with us was the second lowest of his career. This is where decent hitters come to underperform. Despite hitters park, energy of the crowd, yada yada.)
It is? I don’t think of Duvall, Turner, Renfroe, or O’Neill underperforming but perhaps I’m not remembering a horrible home split or some advanced metric.
Clearly it's not a universal thing, and some hitters have gotten better.
If you're curious, look at the the whole roster - guys falling from a 90-110 OPS+ range to a 50-70 is just as damaging as a star underperforming, and it's really there where seasons die. Stopgaps transforming into black-holes.
But for the ones you threw up, I'd suggest Turner was a normal age-decline. The other guys are all power-hitting OFs with injury histories who were brought in on short term make-good, quasi-project contracts. Renfroe did OK (given his career numbers) and hit better after he was traded. Duvall was the same in his 2/3rds of a season. O'Neill - same, and also bit with the injury bug.
Even Mookie is kind of slumping... and you have to notice that the crying has stopped.
We got told to "let it go" when he was playing well and we mentioned it, and now we're told "oh so you've stopped posting now that he's cooled off."
There's no winning with some people.
His "slump" over the last 28 days is a .754 OPS which would be 3rd on the Sox for full time players all year. Sheesh. He also leads the NL in WAR and is 3rd in all of baseball.
I'd take a line-up of slumping Mookies over what the Red Sox are trotting out there this season.

Wait that’s Mike Brumley, former Red Sox player who was traded for Bill Buckner then came back and played here. RIP.
He fractured his shoulder and has been out for the last month also, at least one more month to go.

This is so neat. Apparently the Mets have done nothing but win since they brought him up. Unfortunately, I can't understand anything other than Oh My God. A translation would be so welcome. The Sox could use his energy now.

In Red Sox Nation, the injured beyond usefulness lizard jumped from Sale to Grissom when the trade happened. Is the only way to fix him to trade him elsewhere, so he, too, can become an All-Star?
