Looking to the future, Duran is not a MLB outfielder and has no business being allowed to play CF or RF at Fenway for a team trying to win. Trade him!

I wouldn’t be quite so profane about it, but I agree with enduring JBJ love and that Duran should only be patrolling the Fenway outfield for a visiting team.

Duran's fielding has gotten better to the point where it's easily offset by his offensive potential. If he stays healthy over next season and repeats his performance he's going to be a monster. If he improves his defense still further, he's an all-star.

It's not a given, and if he's traded for value, that is what it is. But he's had an excellent year. By OPS: Raffy .880, Casas .856, Duvall .834, Duran .828, Turner .819.

Just a guess, but I don't think "pure" BABIP is fueling anything so much as it's in part an artifact of his approach. When he slumps he's prone to stretches of 0 for 4 games with 2Ks. When he's on he hits the ball on the ground (often hard) into all fields of a shiftless defense and runs. That'll probably drive up BABIP. (Although I'm sure the fickle hand of blind luck is at play sometimes as well.)

Tito's been with Cleveland longer than Boston, and damn I wish he could have finished 2016 to win a title with that long-suffering franchise too.

Dodgers are 2-8 in their last 10 playoff games, Mookie is 3-38. He just doesn't play well in October.

I get that these are the teams that have nothing to lose by carrying a player all through the 2024 season who may not be quite ready for primetime... but it also seems like an indictment of these franchises that they don't have enough soon-to-be major leaguers to protect that they perennially have the extra roster space.

Interesting development and good for Sale. I'm curious to see what the reaction is from folks who have said Sale shouldn't be counted on for anything now that the Braves have locked themselves into three years with him.

What am I missing here? He was already signed to a one year deal with a $20M club option for next year. How did he negotiate a new deal that apparently pays him much less this year than he was already slated to make?

So it would seem from Sale's POV, he's giving up $11.5M next season to get a guaranteed contract in '25 worth an additional $2M and $10M (possibly $15M) in deferred money paid upfront. From Atlanta's POV, with the $17M from Boston, they're essentially getting him for free in '24 and $1M off the $22M in 2025, plus there's no buyout on the '26 option that he's not going to get anyway. It seems like their plan for acquiring Sale from the beginning was to pay him in 2025 for the services they hope he renders in 2024... and if he does that, whatever they get from him in 2025 is gravy. I'm not sure I'd feel very confident about a pitcher who seems desperate to get the 2025 option converted to guaranteed money.

EDIT: I misread and seemed to be well short on the amount Sale is giving up in 2024.

Some day, I hope the Red Sox are in a position to take the risk and invest in a player like Sale. Injury risk be damn so long as that player isn’t counted on for a full season to get you to the playoffs. When healthy Sale offer top notch SP that can win game on their own.

Atlanta has the staff to remain competitive without him. A health/rested Sale come playoffs could put them over the top.
