That article has some interesting nuggets about Ortiz and Pedroia:

“Back when I played, I tried to really explain to him the benefits of it,” Papelbon said (12:45 in player above). “When you are under that much stress and under that much travel and you’re grinding your teeth away at night.

“I tried to get (Ortiz) to understand that when you can recover quicker, you’re gonna be better for the next day. I tried to always explain that to him, man. Early on in his career, all he would say is ‘You crazy a– white dude. You redneck crazy, man!’”
“Early on in my career when the doctors really weren’t getting evaluated and looked at and checked upon, pain pills out the wazoo,” he said. “No good, bro. I’ve been down that road. That is a horrible road to go down. I felt like every offseason I was in withdrawal when the season was over. This is a terrible thing. With cannabis there is none of that.”

Papelbon said he switched over from pain pills to cannabis about halfway through his career, around 2009 or 2010.

“I started to realize that this train couldn’t stay on the tracks. Ambien at night – Pedroia will tell you about Ambien, that guy will take an Ambien and lose his mind,” Papelbon said. “Look, cannabis has been on this Earth for as long as anybody can remember. It’s an all natural thing.”

Former Sox farmhand Joey Meneses made it to the majors- batting cleanup for the Nationals today (he actually made his debut yesterday and homered). 30 years old, he has played in Mexico and Japan and was the 2018 IL MVP. Made his professional debut in 2011 with the Braves DSL team. Had an 863 OPS for Portland and Worcester last year. Pretty cool story to make the bigs after a decade of trying.

I think Jay Groome makes his 2nd start for the Padres AAA team tonight.

First game he went 4.2 ip, 7 hits, 2r/2er, 4bb/5k.

Mookie sent a video of encouragement to the player from Utah at the LLWS who fell out of his bunkbed and fractured his skull.

Heath Hembree was called up by the Dodgers yesterday and pitched an inning (2 h, 0 r) vs the Mets and got credited with the win.

Vasquez is no Reese McGuire but he’s still hitting. Batting .340 for the Astors.

Does Anibal Sanchez count? He was a Sox prospect but never actually played for the Sox. Regardless, he just got his first MLB win since 2020 with 1 run in 7 IP against the A's.

10D has been terrible on the Yanks. Not sure if it's been discussed a lot here

Batting a cool .212 with 1 HR and a .719 OPS at Yankee Stadium (I don't know B-R well enough to get the splits of him at home, while on the Yankees, so I just went with his #s at the Toilet)

Overall on the Yanks batting .239 with a .698 OPS

You know the league average OPS this year is .707 right?

He has an OPS+ of exactly 100 with the Yankees. If the Red Sox could only have someone so terrible.

That sums him up perfectly, adequate at the plate, adequate in the field.

Ideally he would not be starting for NY in big games down the stretch (Bader in CF, Carpenter at DH) but as it is, he helped them a lot in some big games about ten days ago (when they won three straight 4-2 games against TOR/NYM and he was a big offensive part of all three wins).

There
Junichi Tazawa, most recently of the Mexican League Generales de Durango, is going back to where it all started and re-joining ENEOS in the Japanese corporate/industrial league. They were his original team, back before he skipped NPB to head straight to the Sox. Article in Japanese: https://news.yahoo.co.jp/articles/a170eae624c18ddf25cd84591be7d44b08f16557

Also, I didn't realize NPB had scrapped the "Tazawa Rule" back in 2020. That's good news, it was always quite stupid and petty.

Daniel Bard struck out the side in order today to get his 30th save. He has a 2.03 era and 1.03 whip over 53.1 up with 58k and 24bb. Going into today, he had an xERA of 2.90, fip of 3.31, and xfip of 3.72, so he's been a bit lucky, but still really cool to see.

Daniel Bard pitched 2 innings with 6ks for his 33rd save. He's 1.82 era and 0.99 whip with 69k in 59ip on the year. In Colorado! Amazing.
