I had a cracked rib once when a guy rammed me at 2B turning to make a throw to first on a DP. This is unlikely to be a short stint on the IL for Mookie. It took months to heal. Hell, it took the better part of a month to breathe without notable pain.

This is the Mookie contract risk we discussed in another thread. Don't get me wrong, I love the guy and everything he brings to the table. I hope I'm wrong but cracked ribs are zero fun and take forever to heal.

I guess, although he’s had his greatest career success with the Sox. 3.67 ERA with Boston, 4.13 with the Rockies. I’d avoid him simply because another high BB pitcher seems less than ideal.

Wasn't it cracked ribs that felled Ellsbury for more or less the entire 2010 season? And he sustained the injury in a similar manner to Betts. Rib fractures are not something you can put in a cast and allow to heal undisturbed. Very easy to re-aggravate even when you think you're good to go. Hopefully he rests well and can be a force in the second half.

Bard is currently on a 1 year, $4.4M contract this year. Even assuming some regression on the season and finishes with 25 saves, 2.50 ERA, 1.10 whip - what do we think he could get on the market, given that performance and his age? 2/$12M with a team option for a 3rd season?

If he can somehow stick around for 3 more seasons after this, he'll have played more seasons in the MLB *after* his 5 year absence from the league than before, and that includes his brief two-game experience in 2013. If he can earn $15-$20M (life changing money for anyone) after coming back from that, that's the icing on the cake.

Edit:
This may not be 100% accurate, but from his bref page, it looks like Bard earned $4.8M before The Troubles and $7.3M since he's come back to the league (not counting minor league contracts). It is already incredible what he's done.

Cleveland's 18 games in 16 days coupled with Austin Hedges landing on concussion protocol has stretched the Guardians so thin that Sandy Leon resurfaced in the majors today. Of course he took an 0-fer, but unfortunately with a day game after a night game this weekend and another double-header on Monday, they'll likely be forced to use him in a couple more games.

Kinda funny seeing this post, I was looking at his stats this morning.

Long Island Ducks have their share of Red Sox names. Austin Rei, Devin Marrero, Alrejandro De Aza, Sam Travis, Rusney Castillo, and a 45-year-old Lew Ford.

Jeffrey Springs has 1.9 war for the Rays. 2.25 era, 1.00 whip, 65 k in 60 innings. He gave up more runs in 20 innings for the Sox in ‘20 than he has in 60 innings for the Rays in ‘22.

Can’t imagine anyone saw this coming; this guy was as non-descript as every other pitcher on the CoViD Sox of 2020.

Zac Godley will probably win 15 for the ‘23 Rays.

I doubt he stays up much longer, but Marcus Wilson debuted for the Mariners last week, got his first hit and everything.

Pretty wild- didn’t realize Judge had done it. The phenomenon of guys striking out 200 times is pretty new so surprised it’s happened even once!

That was a DD trade, right? Kopech has flashed, but still has 7 career wins and a mid 3’s ERA and Moncada never really broke out. Pretty nice for an exchange that really seemed at the time to deplete the top of our farm.

Not sure what's happened to him this year, but Moncada was a very good player in 2019 and 2021, it looked like a pretty solid win win trade for both teams.

He isn't even having that great a year this season, it's a good year but he's really only an all star because the Royals are terrible, but someone had to make it.

Shocked you didn't make the same post blaming Bloom for letting now all star Martin Perez walk.

I guess he doesn't count as a former Red Sox since he only pitched in the minors with us. But he was a big part of the Guillermo Mota trade that helped us with the 2007 title.

Per today's LA Times, Hansel Robles now qualifies for inclusion in the forum. The Dodgers signed him to a minor league deal. They didn't say how minor the league was.

Yeah, trading away non-FA years of Renfroe and Benintendi for a bunch of B-/C+ prospects doesn't look good right now given the state of the OF. Hopefully one of the kids can turn that around in the next few years.

They traded Benintendi 18 months ago ago, last year he would have been their 4th best outfielder and wasn't particularly good. Seems silly to argue that because he eventually got better that the trade was either good or bad compared to what he was when they actually traded him.

He was a 2.4 bWAR player last year which was slightly higher than Renfroe and Verdugo, fwiw. I think the idea is that the return on him could have been better, but we’ll never know.
