I just stood against the bullpen fence watching Rubby warm up for the Dbacks. I hope for his sake he was not trying to throw strikes.

Edit: walked dexter fowler on 5 pitches to start the game.

Harley "Jim" Hisner, seen below at the Fenway 100th anniversary celebration, died Friday at the age of 88. Hisner appeared in only one game in his MLB career, pitching 6 innings for the Sox against the Yankees on 30 Sep 1951. His claims to fame include twice striking out Mickey Mantle and surrendering Joe DiMaggio's last regular season hit (not to mention retiring as a lifetime .500 batter). More about him in this Joy of Sox entry and this Bill Nowlin article. (Photo by SoSHer Boggs26, lifted from the Joy of Sox piece.)

Diamondbacks manger Chip Hale confirmed Tuesday that Rubby De La Rosa has secured a spot in the team's Opening Day rotation.

He's starting against the White Sox right now on MLBTV if you're interested.

The Vazquez thread mentioned Jose Iglesias so I thought I'd look to see how he's doing.

44 AB in 16 Spring Training games for the Tigers so far, he's got 4 hits (1 double) and 2 BB and only 4K's.  .130/.114/.244

I hope he starts hitting soon because I love watching him play SS.

* RHP Chris Martin, dealt to the Rockies in December 2013 for Jonathan Herrera, has made the Yankees bullpen.

* LHP Rich Hill assigned to AAA Syracuse by the Nationals (Rotoworld reports him as being "optioned", but Hill has been out of options for about 7 years.)

* 3B Kelly Johnson makes the Braves.

* The Cubs outright LHP Drake Britton to AAA Iowa.

* RHP Matt Albers makes the White Sox, but RHP Brad Penny heads to AAA Charlotte along with C George Kottarars and OF Engel Beltre. Former PawSox 1B Andy LaRoche gets released.

* Stephen Effing Drew finished spring training going 8 for his last 17 with 2 HR & 5 RBI, and will be the Yankees' starting second baseman. Jesus...

* Victor Martinez ends the spring just 5-for-36, but he hit a solo HR today.

* Other former Sox struggling at the plate this spring: Anthony Rizzo (10-for-58) and Adrian Beltre (6-for-41)

* RHP Jake Peavy gets tagged for 6 ER in 3.1 IP in his final spring start, finishing with a 9.64 ERA.

* Coco Crisp underwent successful Butch Hobson Surgery on Friday. He'll be out 6 to 8 weeks.

Arizona releases Cody Ross.

The D-Backs eat his $8.5M salary and buy out his 2016 option for another $1M.

Notable exceptions like Rizzo and Reddick notwithstanding, a lot of the post Hanley, Anibal Sanchez prospects the Sox have traded away have been busts, huh.

In tonight's LA/SD game, old friend Crawford turned Upton's single into a triple, plating a run.  No worries though, as old friend Middlebrooks limits the damage by striking out to end the inning.
You know how Middlebrooks couldn't do anything with sliders on the outside of the plate last year? Saw him tonight and he has a wide open stance and looks like he has even less chance of hitting the outside pitch. I wonder if Chili Davis could have done anything with him. We'll never know.

Saw Rubby D. pitch a couple of innings. He was pitching backwards and getting some outs with 97 heat, but Buster Posey kind of ruined his night. 6 runs given up, all earned, in 5 and a third.

Yeah, that's definitely a trade that should never have happened.

You know how you retain an attachment to your hometown, regardless of where you might end up? That’s how Papelbon says he feels about Boston, even though he is beginning his fourth season with the Phillies, a team that put $50 million in his pocket when they signed him to a four-year deal as a free agent, with a $13 million vesting option for 2016.

“It’s the same thing with me,” he said. "I came up in that organization, I was raised in that organization, I was taught how to play baseball in that organization. I was taught how to become a major leaguer in that organization, so that’s why I feel like that’s what my roots are. That’s who I am. If I get lucky enough to make it to the Hall [of Fame] one day, I’ll go in as a Red Sox. That’s who I feel like is the most part of me.”

But wouldn’t it better, someone suggested to Papelbon, that even if he feels that way, that he keep those sentiments to himself, rather than taking the risk of antagonizing the folks paying his salary?

“It’s not antagonizing,” he said. “It's speaking the truth. When I get asked that question, I give you the truth.

“I don’t say anything to piss anybody off, piss the fans off, by any means. I’m honest, you know? I'm a Phillie right now. I play for the Phillies, but there’s a big part of my heart that lies with the Red Sox, you know what I mean?”

Jonathan Papelbon saves against Red Sox, but expresses no love for Phillies

Cardinals were all over Lester and the knowledge about throwing to first. I expect ALL the teams to exploit that.

2015 batting average:

Yes, and just to update the stats on Iglesias, he is currently hitting .600/.625/.667 for an OPS of 1.292.

Not especially ;)  Just a good reader!

Another tidbit on my boy X

Per Elias, Bogaerts is the first Red Sox player since at least 1947 with four or more hits in extra innings. Alex Rios, in 2013, was the last big league player to do it.

For us historians, does your source say who the Sox player was in 1947 that got four or more in extras? We need to know this kind of stuff! Your moniker is germane today.

Pretty sure the "at least" means no other player going back that far has done so. That year the longest Sox game was 15 innings vs the St. Louis Browns. The only player with more than 3 hits was Johnny Pesky (5). But only two came in extra innings, including the walk-off game-winning single to drive in Eddie Pellagrini.
