Ellsbury is .125/.154/.259 in September thus far, and the Yankees have lost 5 one-run games in that stretch, while the rest of the Wild Card contenders have all scuffled. Coming into the season he had swiped a base every 2.97 games, and that figure is at 3.8 this season.

This post makes me feel all warm inside.

And it's all downhill from here!

Glad to hear he made it back on a mound. What a catastrophic infection for anyone but especially a pitcher. I can't imagine he's going to be able to get back to full strength based on that description. It would be a miracle of medicine and determination, at a minimum.

Yea the prima donna with no pain tolerance is playing through the ankle he sprained earlier this month.

But don't worry, Jackie Bradley will hit, Shane Victorino will heal his back, Allen Craig will be great again, and Rusney Castilllo is a Secretariat level lock to earn his contact and more.

I'd say the Yankees got exactly what they paid for. Lots of production from a premium defensive position (after reading even more about its flaws, I reject any reference to dWAR out of hand). Can't ask for more. Wouldn't expect next year to be any different.

If they'd given the money they gave Betran and McCann to Cano, they'd be up there with the Orioles.

Sure hope the Red Sox can find a productive CF to replace him a hell of a lot more quickly and cheaply than they did Paplebon. Wouldn't want to live through the CF equivalent of Jenks, Bailey, and Hanrahan. At least, not for a second season, since 2014 was a shitshow out there.

The guy who says that any year you don't make the playoffs is a disaster is defendin the team that signed a guy for 152 million to miss the playoffs.

Mind. Blown.

Hey, Papelbon's been pretty goodfor thePhillies, that signing must have been great, eh?

I think you know you're failing logic in that post. How does, "if they'd signed Cano instead of McCann and Beltran, they'd be in the playoffs" constitute defending them. The Phillies have the same excuse Ben has, half the team got hurt and the other half underperformed.

But, this thread is about ex Red Sox and the rules are that you must exaggerate the shortcomings of those who left as free agents. Carry on.

How many games is Fat Joe West suspended for grabbing Paps by the shirt and throwing him aside? Ridiculous. Paps was wrong deserved his suspension. West was wrong too and really needed to be sat down for a few games.
I just watched the Deadspin video and there is no "throwing him aside." Papelbon is right up in his grill and won't let him move past so Joe gets hold of his shirt and pulls him to the side so he can past.

I find Joe West as obnoxious as the next guy but lithos appeared to be 100% on Papelbon.

Didn't see the play yet, but the Rays scored 2 runs on a sac fly to Noodle Arm tonight ... and James Loney was the runner who scored from second

edit: upon review, Ellsbury makes a very fine diving catch in right-center, not quite to the track, and almost hits the cutoff man in short center on the fly as both runners score

I thought Johnny Damon was, is, and forever shall be Noodle Arm, relegating Jacoby to Noodle Arm, Jr. or Taco Noodle Arm.

Ellsbury will have to pick things up these final two weeks to bring his years-not-named-2011 career OPS+ back up to league average. Back-of-the-envelope calculations have him hovering around 99.

For what? He wasn't the one who made contact with the umpire, unless I missed a video.

EDIT: Well, not for what, but I think it's a bit long.
Don't have a link just heard on the radio that Joe West has been suspended for tonight's game. The press release which the announcers were reading from, said that West was suspended for grabbing Pap's shirt during the confrontation. For once, I think baseball got this one right. West deserves a game or two for grabbing Pap's shirt, but Pap deserves a longer ban based not just on the fact of the lewd gesture but also bumping two umps.

Except that Pap gets paid and West gets docked a check

I thought players were not paid for games that they are suspended

EDIT: Huh. Turns out I was wrong. Pap was still fined, but obviously that's a different thing.

Ellsbury with another 0-4. Sporting a .132/.155/.235 line in September. That OPS is .057 lower than the corpse of Derek Jeter.

Given the size of the contract, it's a good thing his game doesn't depend very much on his legs

So what you're saying is that unlike the Red Sox, he's not playing in meaningless games?
I think what he means is that unlike Jackie Bradley, Shane Victorino, or Allen Craig (cost roughly $20 million), Ellsbury (cost roughly $20 million) is very likely to be a productive major league outfielder in 2015.

Imagine what they could have acquired in a trade last offseason if they made Jackie Bradley the centerpiece? And now he's on his way to being Quentin Berry without the steals.

I find it more likely that he will spend just as much time next year on the DL as Vic did this year.

So what you're saying is Ellsbury is the equivalent sunk cost of three players who had lost seasons. Just for a much longer period of time. Got it.

Miami (oh, Miami!)
Given 2012 and 2014, there are now a lot of ex Sox out there - more so than usual it seems.

So how did our trade partners do this year?

Bal is in the post season with Miller's solid contribution.
SF with Peavy, who was excellent.
St. Louis with Lackey, who was decent.
Oak with Lester, who was amazing. (Gomes, not so much).

Meanwhile, from minor trades, released players, and non signed FAs:

Salty has a Eh year with Miami (90 OPS+).

Jacoby has a decent year with the Yanks (110 OPS+).
Chris Capuno was mediocre for the Yanks.
Rich Hill gave the Yanks 5 excellent innings.
Steven Drew was picked up by the Yanks and used as an anchor.

AJP was picked up by St Louis and used as a paperweight.
Carp was picked up by the Rangers and used as a doorstop.
Sizemore was picked up by Philly and put up a 96 OPS+ in 60 games.
Doubront looked OK in a handful of late season starts with the Cubs - perhaps he'll get it together.
Ryan Kalish seems like a AAAA player (Cubs).

Of all of these, Doubront could be the most painful to watch in a few years.

***
I'd like one of the Pittsburg, KC, DC group to win the WS.   On those teams, there are no notable ex-Sox, with the exception of Melancon for the Ps.  Or the cameo guys - Bruce Chen, Adam LaRoche.

Jose Iglesias avoids surgery, cleared for full workouts
by R.J. White | CBSSports.com

Tigers shortstop Jose Iglesias was cleared by doctors and the team to begin preparation for offseason conditioning, the Detroit News reports.
Iglesias will miss the entire 2014 season due to stress fractures in both shins, but Wednesday's exam was immensely positive news as he'll avoid surgery, which could have ended his career. Iglesias is expected to be fine for spring training, and he's set to open next season as the team's starting shortstop.

Grady Sizemore re-signs with Phillies for $2 million.

The deal includes performance bonuses. Sizemore, 32, batted .253/.313/.389 with three home runs and 12 RBI over 176 plate appearances after joining the Phillies around midseason and figures to serve as a part-time player in 2015

Have to think they could get the same production out of a spring training invite or a number of other players for a 1/3 - 1/2 the cost, but good for him.

Consider this unconfirmed.

The bad news is one of the best parts of Fox baseball coverage might no longer be on television, but the good news is the Dodgers might bring aboard one of the bright young minds in baseball to its front office in Gabe Kapler, possessor of a rare combination of major league playing experience and embracing advance statistical analysis.
The news came from an accidental tweet from Kapler, since deleted, responding to a direct message from Jerry Crasnick of ESPN.

Is anyone watching the mlb/Japan series on mlbn? Farrell is managing and watched Franklin Morales give up five runs in the seventh before removing him.

I watched. Tough spot because it is an exhibition (the "real" series against the Nippon All Stars starts tomorrow) and there are usage rules in place for the pitchers.  I imagine they had a planned lineup that ideally had all the relievers picking up a single inning, so every pitcher got a fair length of rope.  Not really surprising that Farrell isn't managing the game like it's the World Series.  Not to mention that they had a seven run lead at the start of the inning.
