And we have a resolution.

Former major leaguer Jose Offerman was ordered by a jury Tuesday to pay out nearly $1 million to a minor league player he assaulted with a baseball bat in 2007.

Former Bridgeport Bluefish catcher Johnathan Nathans was awarded $940,000. He had sought $4.8 million in the lawsuit. Nathans suffered a head injury in the attack, which ended his career, and still has lingering symptoms.

Offerman and his lawyer filed an appeal today. Fucking scumbag. And Offerman's pretty scummy, too.

Offerman's lawyer argued in court papers filed Tuesday that the jury improperly found his client liable for assault because he charged the mound, after determining he was not guilty of battery on the catcher.

More playing time not really agreeing with Mike Carp so far in Texas.

OPS .373 over his first 37 atbats for the Rangers and an 0fa3 so far today not helping. Not exactly the numbers you want out of your number 3 hitter.

Did the Cubs sign Dernell Stenson too?

Wow I didn't realize they picked up Lars, pretty good slash line. Must be Manny's tutelage.
He's going to be 27 in September and he's split this year evenly between AA (.891 OPS) and AAA (.874 OPS).

This is a big improvement from what he put up in the White Sox' system in 2013 but he's not really a prospect any longer given his age. Maybe he'll get one more chance to stick in the show.

Lester seems to have gotten more demonstrative with the A's. Got into it a bit with the ump tonight between innings after getting squeezed.

Edit: Coco just killed himself almost making a spectacular catch on a Lester gopher ball.

Lester's been doing that forever. He's famous for glaring in, freezing in exasperation when not getting a call, or staring them down as he walks off the mound.

90?  Yikes.  Though, I just looked up his stats and he's having a hell of a season: 1.60 ERA, 232 ERA+, 2.63 FIP, 4.15 K/BB.  He's also looked to be fairly consistent and very good with the Phillies.  Maybe Papelbon can pitch with diminished velocity?

It may have been an overpay, but he's been 1.7, 1.5, and now 2.8 bWAR (6 total) and 1.3, 1.0, 1.4 fWAR (3.7 total).  At 6M per WAR (isn't that the going rate? and which WAR is typically used?), he's given them value anywhere between 24M and 36M - while earning 37M.  He just might actually earn that contract!
Some Phillies blogger making the argument that while Papelbon may be entirely "unlikeable," he very well could be the best Phillies closer ever.

Papelbon is tops of the bunch in ERA, ERA+, WHIP, K/BB and WAR, and it's not particularly close for any of them. He's tied for the fewest saves, but he's also on his own for the fewest blown saves. The only thing that the others have on him is Innings Pitched, but one more year for the Phils--and for better or worse, it doesn't sound like he's going anywhere anytime soon--and Pap should pass all of them but Bedrosian. The fact that he's still been worth more in WAR than all of them in such fewer innings' work should show that the volume of his pitching shouldn't bear that much on this discussion anyway.

* * * *

Whether or not you want to give Papelbon the final title of Greatest Phillies Closer Ever, the fact that there's even an argument to be made for him will hopefully get you to appreciate a little more what the guy has done and is doing for the Fightins. He's certainly not the cuddliest closer we've ever had, he probably wouldn't rank in the top 100 of Phillies pitchers you'd want to get a beer with, and he probably won't end up being worth $26 million over the next two seasons. But what he's done thusfar when taking the mound for us in the ninth inning has been pretty undeniable, and deserves to be acknowledged. Happy 100, Pap.

Apparently not meaningful enough for precious little Dreamboat.

Jacoby Ellsbury (ankle) is not in the Yankees starting lineup on Saturday.

Ellsbury was still hobbling around the clubhouse on Saturday after injuring his left ankle while sliding into home plate in the ninth inning on Friday.

Rangers Designate Mike Carp For Assignment
By Charlie Wilmoth [August 30, 2014 at 3:08pm CDT]
The Rangers have announced that they’ve designated 1B/OF Mike Carp for assignment. The move clears space for Derek Holland to be activated from the 60-day DL. Carp had only made 46 plate appearances for the Rangers, who claimed him from the Red Sox earlier this month.

Carp, 28, had a breakout season in part-time duty with the Red Sox in 2013, hitting .296/.362/.523. But he never got untracked in 2014, hitting poorly in a small sample in Boston and then even worse in Texas, leading to a .175/.289/.230 line with no home runs in 145 plate appearances. He’s making $1.4MM in his first season of arbitration eligibility.

Struck out two in his final inning, a 1-2-3 seventh.

Doubront faced a Cards lineup with FIVE lefties (Carp, Adams, AJP, Jay, Descalso) + the pitcher + a free-swinging rookie (Grichuk). Peralta and twilight-of-his-career Holliday are the only 2 decent bats vs. Ls in that line-up.  89 pitches, 57 strikes.  Solid performance I suppose but a pretty weak lineup.  I wonder how hard he was throwing.  I'd like to see him face a better lineup before regret sets in.

In other news, Mike Carp DFA'd again today by the Rangers.

It's not like he has a lot of competition.  Career Phils saves leaders.  McGraw and Bedrosian are probably his competition.

1. Jose Mesa - 112 (LOL)
2. Steve Bedrosian - 103
3. Mitch Williams - 102
4. Brad Lidge - 100
    Jonathan Papelbon - 100
6. Tug McGraw - 94
7. Ron Reed - 90
8. Ricky Bottalico - 78
9. Turk Ferrell - 69 (who?)
10. Jack Baldschun - 59
     Billy Wagner - 59

I wouldn't expect Ells to say anything else, but I still find this quote pretty funny.

Bryan Price, former Red Sox first rounder, debuted today coming out of the Indians' bullpen. Price was traded to Cleveland in the Victor Martinez deal.

Price started well, breaking Ian Kinsler's bat on a very weak ground out to catcher and then getting Torii Hunter to ground out. The wheels kind of fell off after that as Miguel Cabrera took him deep, V-Mart BB, JD Martinez HBP, Castellanos 1B, Avila 1B, and then Suarez fouled out. On the plus side, he did break two bats.

Those first four batters are one helluva tough quartet to have to make your MLB debut against. 23 All-Star Game selections and 28,138 career plate appearances between them.

Manny being The New Manny.  Great article on Manny's season as player coach for Cubs AAA team in Iowa.  Looks like he has made an impact on these young studs for the Cubs.

It is a great article. Good for Manny, and good for those young Cubs hitters. Maybe we'll see the Cubs/Sox in the WS down the road. Also, good for Theo for giving Manny a job there. Love the part where Theo has to go down the hall to tell other execs what Manny had said on the phone.

God I miss Manny. I know it'll never happen in a million years, but I would give a lot to see him have just one more game taking aim at the Monster.

Former Red Sox farmhand Miguel Gonzalez -- Salem 2010 and 3 levels in 2011 -- shut out the Red Sox tonight. I was completely unaware that they had this guy in their system. While in their system, he was awful. All of a sudden, at age 28, he becomes a solid 4th starter. I leave the mechanism by which that happened as an exercise for the reader.
