Detroit doesn't even have a true backup shortstop on their roster.

Spring training ain't over yet. Always a few moves happen as it draws to a close. I hear Stephen Drew might be available...

If Iglesias doesn't hit, what exactly do you think they'll do, let him throw up a .250 OBP all season? They'll either trade for tor bring up another INF. They won't let him keep playing if he can't contribute anything offensively.

Well, as long as the shin problems don't hold him back, I'm expecting him to start all year. My expectation is an OBP around .310.

Here's to baseball! The season can't start soon enough.

An OBP of 310 wouldn't make him a good hitter, but that's likely enough for them to keep his glove in the lineup and have him hit 8th or 9th. Which has value, don't get me wrong. Detroit has enough other offense to make up for that.

Agreed on the last sentence.

Jesus H. Christ, did we really need another page and a half of Iggy & WMB bullshit clogging up this thread? I mean, the article posted by Spud was fine and all, as it was new and refreshing content. But perhaps the ensuing "He's good! No he isn't! He can hit! No he can't! WMB sucked for a whole spring training game, we shoulda traded him instead!!" tardspackle can be broken out. Or maybe the eleventy billion threads we've already had on these two have exhausted the topic.

It's like Drew v.3.0 in here.

EDIT - Like maybe here, an Iggy-titled thread where the Sports On Earth article is already posted?

Good little read here: http://www.fangraphs.com/blogs/jose-iglesias-defense-in-detroit/

Contains an amusing stat: Ozzie Smith put up a .522 OPS in his age 24 season.

Ozzie put up a 753 OPS in his only minor league season.

And of course, Ozzie was the greatest defensive shortstop in baseball history. I mean, 3 orders of magnitude better than anyone else.

And of course teams are a bit more savvy today about offense than they were in 1977.

(In no way am I suggesting Ozzie should have been benched, BTW).

Well I thought it was a fun little exchange. Sorry I didn't say, "Oh you wanna disagree about Iglesias? Meet me in the other thread!"

I almost didn't say anything because I knew that it would turn into this. browndog is right. If we want to re-hash this discussion for the hundredth time we should do it elsewhere. The truth is people are going to look at the stats and the others are going to look at the talent and both are going to come to their own conclusions. It really doesn't need to be debated anymore. It's time to just sit back and watch what develops.

Last thing though, saying someone is never going to do something is a little short sighted. No matter what the situation. Unless he's dead of course.

Oh, and Dome a point can most definitely be valid while the logic behind it is dumb.

A valid argument can still have a false conclusion.

And hopefully we can all agree that he seems like a great kid and we want him to become a better hitter.

Sorry I missed the Iggy thread. I really didn't mean to get this started.

To make room for newly signed RHSP Joe Saunders, the Rangers DFA'd OF Alex Castellanos, who they'd claimed on waivers from the Sox after he was DFAd to make room for Napoli on the 40-man. It's his 3rd time being designated for assignment this off-season. The first was the prelude to the Sox acquiring him from the Dodgers for OF Jeremy Hazelbaker.

SP's Chris Hatfield had the same thought I did: The Sox could still use an optionable backup CF to play in Pawtucket who they could call up for short-term injury coverage and send back down at will. With RHSP Steven Wright having gone under the knife for a hernia last month, shelving him until May or later, putting him on the 60-day DL would open up a 40-man spot and allow a waiver claim.

Well, even if the Sox wanted him, 28 other teams had preference on the waiver wire over the DEFENDING WORLD SERIES CHAMPIONS (man, it feels great to type that). So now Castellanos is a Padre.

Watched the Pirates game today with former Sox prospect Stolmy Pimental starting. Had a lot of trouble with LHH. Have up 3 HR's to lefties and had some other balls tattooed from that side of the dish.

If you want to check out Stolmy Pimentel, he's pitching right now against the Yankees on MLBN and YES. Ichiro just had a classic Ichiro-esque PA (fouling off numerous pitches to the left) before going to LF for a leadoff base hit. Nunez follows with a solid line drive single up the middle on a fastball up & in.

Some news on the guy we got for Manny:

Alex Speier ‏@alexspeier
Agent Joe Urbon, in Balt to see Grady Sizemore's return, says OF Jason Bay is enjoying retired life, though hasn't filed retirement papers

Alex Speier ‏@alexspeier
But the papers represent a formality for Bay, who actually came up in Expos system with Sizemore and remains close to him.

Stolmy Pimentel picks up his first ML win in the 16-inning marathon v. the Cubs.

Paps completely pooped the bed v. Texas today.  Entered the game up 3-1 in the ninth.  In 1/3 of an inning, he gave up 4H, 2BB and three ER.

Also, sounds like his velocity is way down

Would suspect that might be early season troubles he works through however.
I'm not sure why you'd believe that. Here's his velocity trend:
2011: 95 mph
2012: 93.8
2013: 92
2014: 91.6

At his age, it's no big surprise. Good thing he got that big contract when he did!

I watched him pitch yesterday and I don't think he topped 91. Most were between 88 and 90.

Ryan Kalish went 2-3 with a double, a triple and two walks today for the Cubs. Still just 26.
