FARMINGTON, Maine – The University of Maine at Farmington Athletics Department welcomes seven new assistant coaches to its staff this fall.

DEVORN HANSACK

A native of Pearl Lagoon, Nicaragua, Hansack played parts of three seasons for the Boston Red Sox, making his major league debut on September 23, 2006, against the Toronto Blue Jays. In the final game of the 2006 season, Hansack pitched a no-hitter for five innings before the remainder of the game was rained out; because the game was rain-shortened, he was given credit for the complete game and the shutout, but not the no-hitter.

After starting both the 2007 and 2008 seasons in Triple-A Pawtucket, Hansack was again called up to Boston in mid-season. Over nine appearances in three seasons, he posted a 2-2 record with a 3.70 ERA over 24.1 innings pitched. Hansack recorded 18 strikeouts over his major league career with a 1.151 WHIP.

In the minor leagues, Hansack helped lead the Double-A Portland Sea Dogs to the 2006 Eastern League Championship and was named the Eastern League Championship Most Valuable Player, and was the team's 2006 pitcher of the year.

I wonder if Hansack received a World Series ring? The Sox gave one to pretty much everyone in 04 (Abe Alvarez got one), but I have no idea if the front office was so generous in 07.

Last night, Jed Lowrie broke a 3 - 3 tie with a 3 run HR in the 6th. The Twins came back to tie it again, but Coco Crisp broke that tie with a 2 run HR in the 8th.

146 games for Lowrie this year. His previous career high was 97.  Will wonders never cease.

They spelled his name wrong - it's Devern.

That "no-hitter" was also Trupiano's last game. I think he gave one last "WAY BACK... and caught by the shortstop" before he signed off.

A profile of Bronson Arroyo as he heads into free agency.

With a surplus of starters here there would seem to be a minuscule chance of him returning to Boston (barring any off-season trades sending two current SPs packing). But it would sure be nice to see him finish his career wearing his favorite laundry.

edit:  and his ESPN page still has him wearing his Sox hat

That's three good starts for him in a row.  I'll bet a bad NL team gives him a 1-year deal in the offseason (Mets, Astros, or Padres).

Something like $5 million with $5 more based on innings wouldn't surprise me

Meanwhile, Darnell McDonald hit his first HR of the year (one of his three hits yesterday) as the Cubs beat the Pirates

Edit:  Oh, and check which league the Astros are in!

Preening narcissist, raging dipshit, psychotic egomaniac Bobby Valentine lost his TBS studio gig for his stupefyingly moronic comments regarding the Yankees and 9/11.

I will maintain to my dying day that hiring this fuckstick as manager was the single worst decision the Red Sox organization has made since naming Pinky Higgins GM back in the 60s. And firing his useless carcass about .000000000000232318258 seconds after last season ended might have been their best.

My sincerest hope is that he ends up living under a bridge some day. Next to Grady Little.

Grady just made some bad decisions. Valentine is those words you used above, which calls for a much worse fate than Grady deserves. I'm OK with Grady living in a hotel with the vacancy sign flashing outside the room.

Neil Best at Newsday reports that TBS had originally planned to bring Valentine on to work its studio show alongside Keith Olbermann and Pedro Martinez for the MLB playoffs, but ditched those plans.

Then thank God for small favors because he might have nullified, or at least severely diminished the excellence of Pedro as a commentator.

Grady did lose some games, one in particular that eventually got him fired.  But he never lost the clubhouse or most of the fans.

Valentine managed to alienate the players, the coaches, the fans, and just about everyone else associated with the team not named Cafardo or Lucchino in a very short time.  And lost a lot more games in the process.

Still a better manager than Grady.
Being a good in-game manager isn't the only job of a manager, though. Valentine might not have been putrid at the in game stuff (I still think he was) but in literally every other aspect of being a manager he was one of the biggest fucking retards on the planet. Grady was light years better than Valentine.

Here's a look at former Sox (including staffers & minor leaguers) on clubs who'll be playing baseball after tomorrow. Basically, anyone who's currently on a 40-man roster or holding a coaching, baseball ops, scouting or front office position. I make no claims of completeness, so if I missed anyone please chime in. Also, I'm including all 3 AL wild card contenders on the off-chance there's a 2-way tie for the 2nd spot or a 3-way tie for both.

Miami (oh, Miami!)
So, from Mabrowndog's post above, if we just has a special series: RS v. Former RS (on playoff(ish) teams only), we'd have the following.  Numbers are OPS and ERA.  Bullpen's a bit thin, but that's a pretty impressive team.

C    Tim Federowicz .639
1B  Adrian Gonzalez .807  (James Loney)
2B  Jed Lowrie .791  (Mike Aviles .657)
SS  Hanley Rameriez 1.040  (Jose Iglesias)
3B  Adrian Beltre .875
RF  Josh Reddick .684
CF Coco Crisp .779  (Marlon Byrd .843)
LF  Carl Crawford .739 (David Murphy)
DH Brandon Moss .856 (Victor Martinez .785)

SP Anibal Sanchez 2.57
SP Bartolo Colon  2.65
SP Justin Masterson 3.48
SP Bronson Arroyo 3.79
SP Stephen Fife 3.86 (move to bullpen?)
SP Josh Beckett (DL)

RP Mark Melancon 1.39
RP David Carpenter 1.81
RP Matt Albers 3.14
RP Nick Hagadone 5.46

Mgr - Terry Francona

He's been their best pitcher for the last three years.

2011 - Masterson 4.3 fWAR, 2nd place 1.6 fWAR
2012 - Masterson 1.9 fWAR, 2nd place 1.1 fWAR
2013 - Masterson 3.4 fWAR, 2nd place 2.8 fWAR

I mean, that probably says more about Cleveland's pitching staff than it does about Masterson, but if ace = #1 starter for their team then that's definitely him.

Just to a bow on it, Iglesias finishes his 2013 season with the following lines:

BOS - 234 PA: 330/376/409,  376 BAbip
DET - 148 PA: 259/306/348, 320 BAbip
Total - 382 PA: 303/349/386, 356 BAbip

Not too shabby.  Even his 654 OPS in Detroit is good enough to justify keeping his glove on the field (particularly given the rest of their lineup).

He'll be interesting to follow in the coming years.

A year ago this board would be going nuts if you everyone that Jose would put up and OBP of .349 in almost 400 at bats. I hope getting a fourth starter for 1.25 seasons is worth it.

Relax. .356 BABIP this year for Jose. My guess is that's going to regress like hell next year.

Exactly. I think his Detroit line is much closer to what he's going to do going forward and while that's fine for Iggy as a glove first SS, I think most around here prefer X as our starting SS.

Come on with the hyperbole!

Without Jake Peavy, and I don't even care if it's 1.25 seasons, the Sox could potentially be the Wild Card.  Buchholz didn't come back until mid-September, and Dempster and Doubront regressed.  In addition, classifying him as a "fourth starter" is disingenuous at best.  Do you not think he's in the same class as Lackey or Lester?  Plus, going into a playoff series where he can be slotted as your fourth pitcher, but not the classical sense of "fourth starter", is a huge advantage.  Looking back, I still do that trade a million times over.

I hope Iglesias can keep up that .349 obp, that would be great.  Good for the Tigers.  In turn, I hope I'm celebrating his success while Xander's putting up OBP's near 400 and hitting close to 30 HR's.

Couldn't help but notice a difference between Gonzo and Craw last night. Both had big games, but when Gonzo got rung up on a ball he just looked at the ump and said Nope and calmly walked back to the dugout. Later Crawford yapped at the ump over a first-pitch Strike 1. It was 10-4 at the time. He was barking at blue for like a half-minute. On a Strike 1 in a blowout.

Don't know if that costs him borderline calls in this series, but he'd deserve it. Not smart. Meanwhile Gonzo sees the long con of stoicism.

Ex-Sox in the LDS thus far. It's been feast or famine on offense, while all four pitchers have had their issues (Melancon far less so than the others):

2013 hero Jonathan Diaz signs with the Blue Jays

They must have been impressed with his one start with the Sox, against them on June 29, when he went oh for three, with a foul out, a line out, and reaching on a FC (and scoring a run).

Hope to see you Opening Day, Jonathan.  I'll buy you a slice of pepperoni from the stand underneath near first base.
