Kris Johnson has been lights out in his major league debut for the Pirates this afternoon.

Good for him; there were plenty of times where he was so bad he could have been forgiven for going into some other line of work.  I wonder what took so long to click, as I seem to remember a lot of people thinking that the Red Sox had gotten a real sleeper pick and his success this season suggests they were (eventually) right.

Brandon Moss hit a walkoff HR against Seattle yesterday. For a guy that looked to be AAAA cannon fodder back in 2010/2011, he's making a nice comeback for himself the last couple of years in Oakland.

The power of platoon.

Brandon Moss in 2013
vs RHP: .258/.332/.491/.824 (287 PA)
vs LHP: .164/.239/.311/.550 (61 PA)

Brandon Moss in 2012
vs RHP: .290/.363/.643/1.006 (234 PA)
vs LHP: .293/.339/.431/.770 (62 PA)

Not only that, but Oakland found a very cheap platoon partner in Rule 5 pick and Wellesley native Nate Freiman:
vs RHP: .171/.216/.171/.388 (37 PA)
vs LHP: .314/.356/.471/.827 (132 PA)

That's a great sign for our Carp/Hassan future.

Dice K signs with mets, starting Friday.

His start was the leading sports story over here. I think the game was televised live here as well.
He gave up two absolute mammoth home runs on hanging breaking balls.

5IP, 6H, 5R, 4K, 1BB.

He'll probably keep in the Mets rotation with those numbers :D

I'm really surprised that Papelbon is still pitching well. I never thought he'd succeed without mid 90s velocity. But his fastball is way down this year, and he's still doing a solid job as a closer (still overpaid, but at least he's still pitching at a closer level).

Marlon Fucking Byrd.

Claimed off waivers, dealt to Pirates, inserted as PIT's cleanup hitter, hammers a 3-run bomb to straightaway center.

Seems like he was still having post-concussion issues for all of last season. From the start of this season he's looked like a completely different player.

I know I'm cherry picking here and his number aren't that great across the board, but Brandon Moss now has as many homeruns as Ortiz this season (24).

As noted earlier in the thread, Moss has been platooned almost exclusively this season and it's paying mighty dividends for him and his team. His career looked to be stalled in 2010-11 in the Pirates' system and it's impressive he's been able to make it work again.

I looked up how Brandon Jacobs was doing the other day and he started off like a ball of fire for the Birmingham Barons. Two Chicago sportswriters wrote gushing columns about him. Now his OPS is down to .581. I'm rooting for the kid, largely because Dewey spoke highly of him during the spring of 2012.

Jose Iglesias is 10-35 with the Tigers with 9 singles, 1 homer and 0 walks, resulting in a .286/.286/.371 line.  Two of the singles are classified as soft flyballs and five are of the infield variety, so he's still getting by mostly on luck and speed out of the box.

In the field, he's made a couple of phenomenal plays, including this one last night:

Iggy up to 82 at bats in Detroit now now with a .280/.330/.354 line, aided by .344 batting average on balls in play.

And of course, I only looked up his latest offensive stats because of this:

Coco just hit HR #15.  He is still an above-average CF, but remains injury-prone.

So much for Reddick's hot August.  Those 5 HR in two games were the highlight of his month.  Now he's hurt again and it's unclear when he'll be back.

Pirates called up Stolmy Pimental today.  He's going to pitch out of the 'pen for them.

Kris Johnson will make his first ML start for the Pirates tomorrow as a spot starter.

James Loney continues to rake for the Rays. He looked like a legit hitter against the A's this weekend. Maybe he's finally figured things out at age 29?

Coco with another HR.  Now has 7 HR in 12 games and has established a new career high in HR with 17.

After leading the IL in ERA and having a strong showing in relief in August Kris Johnson came crashing back down to earth yesterday allowing 5 ER in 2 IP in a spot start for the Pirates.

Dice-K shelled again. Wonder how many more starts he'll get.

It's too bad.  No one was a bigger DiceK fanboy than me.  If he can't do it for the Mess, in the kiddie league and in a big ballpark, he's done.  Lots and lots and lots of mileage on that arm; he probably can't get decent velocity stirring a Cup O'Soup.

Not sure about that. The day his flight came into Logan, boston.com ran a tracker of where it was and when his ETA would be. There were a lot of Daisuke fanboys in the area.

Everywhere
Lowrie just launched his 11th HR of the year to dead center in Oakland.

This is the first year that Lowrie has played more than 100 games (135 so far) in a season and he has a .288/.346/.779 line.  I'm glad to see him get through a season without a major injury.  Its too bad that it look him so long to have an injury free season like this one, as that is a nice line for a SS who could have filled in for WMB this season at third too.

Papelbon has definitely lost some velocity, but that 2013 "slider" is almost certainly a curveball.

LOL. Tiger's announcer saying that when they traded for Iggy, they got a guy who can really handle the bat and is fast on the base-paths. So apparently I'm not alone in appreciating the little guy, who had just bunted for a hit, the third hit for the Tiggers on the night (bottom of the 6th).

Their true feelings aside (whatever they may be), the Tigers organization gives Iggy the kind of public, positive stroking he didn't get, and would not have gotten (it seems) in Boston. I don't follow the Tigers as thoroughly as I do the Sox, but my impression is that they have welcomed him with open arms where as Boston kept him more at arm's length. He seems like a kid who responds to well to having that confidence placed on him. And Peavy is working out too so good for both teams.

If you look at his game logs, the A's did two interesting things: (1) they made him a 2bman for a while, which seems to have motivated Lowrie; and (2) they DH him a bit to give him days off while remaining in the lineup.  I don't know if that was somehow a magic combination of factors that let him remain relatively healthy, but it's really surprising that he's made it through the year relatively unscathed.

The A's plan this year, where everyone except Cespedes was basically a fungible part unless/until they proved themselves worthy of playing time was pretty interesting.

Behind
Im thinking that when he first started running out the box, it kind of looked like the second baseman might get to it. It was a chopper. But he immediately put his head down, and so slid, thinking in the back of his mind that there would be a throw. Funny nonetheless. Especially when people argue that its faster not to slide into first.
