I assume his fate was sealed when he accidentally interrupted a Walter White meth cook back in Albuquerque.

EDIT - Just dropped a line to Astros minor league blogger Jayne Hansen, who posted about him on Valentine's Day:

When I asked GM Jeff Luhnow about Weiland (when I interviewed him back in November), he indicated that Weiland's situation was not a routine one, but he was building his strength up and Luhnow hoped he would be ready for Spring Training. We will soon see.

I asked her if she'd heard anything since then:

Not one word. Someone coined the phrase "Weiland Island" as the place where injured players go and are never heard from again.

So it seems my Breaking Bad theory is the most plausible yet.

Two random ex-sox notes:

Jeremey Hermida hitting .298 with 14HR for Columbus.

Kris Johnson leading the IL with an ERA of 2.52

I read it on my MLB at bat app so I don't have a link but there's a story up about Paps trashing the Phillies.

It's pretty funny to be honest.
I thought we all knew that paps was not the smartest person who dosent think before he speaks

I actually agree with him, I just find it funny how badly his FA venture is backfiring.

There is an element of truth to his complaints about the Phillies, sure.  If he had half a brain and considered the team's prospects as part of his process for choosing a team rather than blindly chasing the money, he might have seen this coming for Philly (aging team with a lot of money tied into the aging players).  Then again, few players (and even fewer agents) have the foresight to look at the big picture when deciding where to commit for a long-term contract.  So he gets what he deserves.

Wow, that was one of the best written sports pieces I've read lately. Kapler's closeness to the situation made it so clear and so specific. I loved the contrast with "Red" (Josh Reddick). Thanks for the link.

I agree. As Yogi said, "90% of this game is half mental." Looks like Lars can't get past the mental part. He's so down on himself he lost confidence and got all screwed up.

Can you imagine? He's 25 years old and was once a top prospect and now he's essentially considered washed up. That's got to be impossibly tough to take.

Marlon Byrd has 17 home runs. The only one on the Red Sox with more HRs is David Ortiz.

Weird that this guy Byrd with the Mets has the same exact name as that terrible, useless, washed-up outfielder named Marlon Byrd who was with Boston last year.

Should the Red Sox take a flier on him and pick him back up (esp. if it won't cost them anything)

They're giving Drew Sutton regular duty at 1B in Pawt. He can't do worse than him.

Especially since Byrd was on PED's for at least a portion of last year.

That's more shocking than hearing, one drunken Friday night in February 2004, that he'd been signed again by the Red Sox.

A slow worker, but a pretty good five inning pitcher. Jimy realized he fell apart quickly and was always good with the hook, Grady did not realize this and did not pull him when he was gassed. Who would have thought that the guy with no sense of timing would do what he did in Game 7 2003?

With Bud Norris and his $3M salary headed to Baltimore, old buddy Erik Bedard -- at $1.15 million -- becomes the highest-paid active* player on the Houston Astros' roster.

* Technically they're still paying another old friend, Carlos Pena, the $2.9M on his 2013 contract. He was DFAd on 7/21, but there's been no word on if he refused a minor league assignment to become a FA, or if he's cleared waivers and been sent down to one of Houston's affiliates.

Just read this. I loved this quote
My adrenaline was through the roof, so that was pretty cool, he remembered, but I was pounding balls into the ground and fouling balls off. That may have been a sign of things to come.

And it was. Lars was unable to see the forest through the trees and appreciate the fact that he, a teenager, had just been holding his own (at the very least) against a man that had thrown a perfect game at Yankee Stadium.
Kind of makes it's a little easier to understand the pressure these top draft picks and top prospects face and put on themselves. Perfect game and Yankee Stadium are both huge words in baseball history.

Jose Iglesias has played 3B (for a banged up Miguel Cabrera) and batted 7th for the Tigers the past two days. He's been 1-for-3 in each game, with a solo HR last night.

Ryan Pressly got lit up by KC Monday night.  Allowed 7 ER in 1.1 IP.  Going in had allowed 18 ER in 52.2 IP.  ERA rose from 3.08 to 4.17.

Anyone recognize the guy who got his first Major League save in the Sox game last night?

Yep, that Josh Fields, who the Astros took from the Sox in the Rule 5 draft this year.  We got him with Erik Bedard

Maybe I missed it, but I was surprised Orsillo didn't say a word about it when he came into the game or anytime during that inning.

Ross: Red Sox 'lied to my face"

"Ross, 32, is batting .271 with six home runs in 86 games this year for Arizona."

Yeah, except according to his own words, they didn't lie to him.

"They told me that they didn't want to sign guys to long-term deals, and then they gave (Shane) Victorino a three-year deal, and then (Mike) Napoli a three-year deal or four-year deal, whatever it was..."

If you say you don't want to go to work today, but you end up going anyway for whatever reason, that makes you unsuccessful at fulfilling your desire. But it doesn't make you a liar.

In conclusion, Cody Ross is being a douche.

Couldnt Ross see 3 or 4 years as a long term deal?

I wonder if the exact wording was that "they didnt want to sign guys to long term deals". Thats Ross' interpretation. Regardless, he plays baseball, he must understand that different types of players get different types of deals. For example, the Sox may not want to sign long term deals as a general rule, for that offseason, but if Trout fell into their lap, wouldnt the Sox want to sign a long term deal? Obviously Trout wouldnt fall into their lap, my point is that the length of deals is going to be contingent on the player. Sorry Cody, they only viewed you as someone they wanted to risk two years on. Especially with a similar player in Gomes on the market (another factor at play here). Dont take it personal.

Edit: obligatory Iglesias watch ... 1 for 4, with the one hit, you guessed it, infield hit in the 9th (3 for 15)

Maybe they told him they would go 1 year at, say, 7M and not more years because they didn't want to sign guys to a long term deal, then he goes and sees Victorino and Napoli get offered 3 and 4 years

I think the disconnect is that Ross sees Victorino as a comp, while the Sox saw Gomes as a comp for his skill set.
