Anyone have any word on what Rich Hill's plans are for the upcoming season? He is making an appearence at a Red Sox/Jimmy Fund event, but he is currently unsigned? Seems like he's a pretty decent value on a minor league ST invite deal.

My money's on the Sox re-signing both Hill and Atchison to minor league deals in the coming weeks, and that both will be willing to pitch for the PawSox in hopes of being part of the big club at some point in 2013.

By all accounts, both want to remain in the Boston area -- Hill because he and his wife are both from Milton and live in Southie with their year-old son, and Atchison because his young daughter has been receiving treatment at Children's Hospital over the past 3+ years for a rare medical condition.

Since they were both non-tendered at the end of November, there hasn't been a single word in the rumor mill about either player being connected to any of the other 29 MLB teams. That speaks volumes.

I wonder if each of them has done a good job investing the money they've made and don't need the additional million or so they could fairly easily command with a team that was much more likely to need bullpen help. I guess with Hill's injury history and Atchison's current injury they might have trouble getting a guaranteed deal, but if healthy at the end of spring training there have to be a dozen teams for which they'd be in the top 5 options easily rather than destined for AAA unless something bad happens to someone else regardless of how well you pitch. I can't imagine being away from a sick daughter for months at a time, but a million dollar salary for the Mets, Orioles, or Phillies rather than a hundred thousand in Pawtucket would be hard to deny to my family too.

The White Sox claim RHP Zach Stewart off waivers from Pittsburgh. So the White Sox only gave up Brent Lillibridge, a few months of Stewart and some cash for their half-season rental of Youk.

Still no word on the PTBNL the Red Sox are getting from the Pirates for dealing Stewart there in November.
According to baseballreference's franchise trade page, Kyle Kaminska was named as the PTBNL on December 6.

Per Susan Slusser of the SF Chronicle:

Multiple sources told The Chronicle that the A's are considering signing former Red Sox left-hander Hideki Okajima.

Okajima, 37, had a 3.11 ERA in 261 relief appearances over five seasons with Boston. He spent last season with Fukuoka in Japan, putting up an 0.94 ERA in 56 appearances.

Good for him. If he makes the club, it keeps him close enough to Boston and his daughter's doctors.

Per Rob Bradford

Scott Atchison will make $700,000 if he makes #Mets major league club, with chance for $150,000 more in incentives

No, what he's saying is he wasn't tough enough to handle the pressure of playing in Boston (where we sell out every game, as opposed to LA, where folks show up late and leave early), and it was depressing for him being hurt.

I cringe a bit reading the part where he talks about whether he regretted signing in Boston.  He mentions that others say it was about money, but can't seem to admit that was his primary motivation.  Of course it was the money.  From a pure baseball perspective, Boston was a shitty fit for a player like him.  A home park with a small left field which minimized his defensive value.  A home park that absolutely did not fit his strengths as a left-handed hitter.  It was obviously going to be a struggle for him to perform up to his previous standards in that environment, let alone adding the pressure to live up to that huge contract in a fishbowl media/fan environment that shouldn't have come as a surprise to him.  He was chasing dollars, plain and simple.  Nothing wrong with that at all, but it makes it a bit disingenuous when he acts like he was a victim in how things broke down in his time here.  He chose to walk into the lion's den for a boatload of cash...I feel no sympathy for him having to deal with the "toxic" environment in Boston.
