Tyler Gaffney (that's "2 Time SuperBowl Champion Tyler Gaffney" to you) is tearing it up for the Pittsburgh Pirates

Gaffney hit .291/.391/.470 in 38 games with Bradenton, collecting 15 extra-base hits and going 10-for-15 in steals. He was a 2012 draft pick, who played one year in the New York-Penn League before pursuing an NFL career

His theme that Gase is more one of the guys and he finds that to be refreshing after dealing with Bill the Principal was understandable.

I can believe that it’s more enjoyable to play for a friend. But I know that Bill’s approach works fabulously.

My only question is does it ever stop working because guys just get tired of it or tune the head man out? I think the answer is a resounding no but given the behavior of Brady and Gronk, and some other signs, I guess I’m slightly less sure than I would have been last year at this time.

PS:

These recent comments by James Harrison touch on some of the same themes that Dola addressed, albeit from perhaps the opposite perspective:

This shouldn’t come as a surprise, but when the “Undisputed” team asked Harrison who the better coach is, he picked Belichick.

Skip Bayless: “Give us the better coach, Mike Tomlin or Bill Belichick?”

Harrison: “Belichick.”

Bayless: “By far?”

Harrison: “To me, yes.”

To Harrison, it comes down to discipline, a quality that Harrison says Tomlin needs more of.

Harrison: “Mike Tomlin is good as a head coach. He’s a player’s coach. I think he needs to be a little bit more disciplined. Other than that, the big thing with Belichick, he’s very regimented, he’s disciplined. Everybody is going to be on the same page … Over there, their coaching staff is like that. … I ain’t never been to so many meetings in my life.”

Harrison went on to talk about how all of the meetings in New England helped him pick up the defense in a short time fame, and how everybody shows up on time to meetings because they’re all afraid of being late, including Tom Brady. He also said Tomlin could be “more consistent across the board with everyone, from your stars to your special teams.”
https://wdef.com/2018/07/19/james-harrison-on-why-mike-tomlin-isnt-as-good-as-bill-belichick-discipline/

And yes, Gase and Tomlin are not one and the same.

Good for Jimmy I guess? Dating a woman who is a porn star and former (?) escort probably wouldn’t be my first move - good looking guy with lots of money. But whatever floats your boat

I’ll be honest, I probably wouldn’t be super exicited if that’s the route Brady took even if it’s unfair.

Brady had a life before Giselle.

After two weeks, Malcolm Butler has been targeted 17 times giving up the most DB yardage allowed (257) and TDs allowed (3). He has been terrible so far this year against the deep ball.

Willie McGinest getting the A Football Life treatment on Friday. This trailer has me pumped and jacked:

It brought a warm feeling to my heart when Paul Tagliabue appeared on screen to announce the McGinest pick. It made me nostalgic for the days when actual competent adults were in charge of things.

I am not gloating, as I love Malcolm and wish him the best. Certainly, though, it looks like Bill made the right choice.
Same with Lewis. First 4 games with the Titans:
  • at MIA: 16 rushes for 75 yards (4.69 YA) + 5 receptions for 35 yards + 1 TD
  • vs HOU: 14 rushes for 42 yards (3.00 YA) + 1 reception for 1 yard + 0 TD
  • at JAX: 8 rushes for 26 yards (2.89 YA) + 3 receptions for 14 yards + 0 TD
  • vs PHI: 4 rushes for 0 yards + 9 receptions for 66 yards + 0 TD
Michel's at 5th in rushing yards (32nd in avg) while Lewis is at 36th (67th in avg).

Dion Lewis with 211 touches for Titans this year, he had 212 for NE last year, so he'll likely get a few more, but essentially the same. Fewer rushes, more catches, about 200 fewer yards from scrimmage.

He's only at 3.3 ypc, and in his last 6 games he has 43 carries for 121 yards, and only once over 50 yards from scrimmage in that time. Glad he made his money though.

Danny Amendola has been on quite a heater on Instagram over Olivia Culpo. I’ve had my heart broken, but not like Danny, he’s become Glenn Close scary.

Apparently Edelman posted on DA's instagram, saying, "Dude, get off instagram." We all need a friend like Edelman. But that piece of advice has since been deleted.

Culpo had bought DA a Rolex Daytona for his birthday, then made a post wearing it herself when he dumped her just before. That’s how you slag an ex on IG.

Richard Seymour finishing 132nd out of ~8500 in the World Series of Poker Main Event is surely notable too. I tuned in near his high water mark, watched him fold an overpair to a double-ended straight draw to lose ~30 big blinds, and then get gradually ground down until he went out. Sorry Richard, I'm sure you'll be active again soon.

Was that the one where he took forever to decide?

Yeah. He had pocket 10s to a 65o BB, somebody raised, somebody raised more (can't find clip of it) and it ended up the two of them on the flop. Flop comes 248o I think, so a 7 or 3 makes the guy's straight. Seymour's at 68% to win, the betting pattern was a little weird, the BB pushes all-in for about 1/3 of Seymour's stack and after something like 4 minutes of thinking, he folds. He was above the average stack going into that hand, dropped below after it, and never really recovered much.

Seymour's messenger-esque bag was the subject of announcer speculation all night, so Rich Eisen got him to talk about that - and about how he prepares for "situational poker".

I was in North Carolina last week on vacation and flew back to Boston yesterday from RDU. While waiting for my flight I was suddenly surrounded by a bunch of really, really big dudes wearing Massachusetts Pirates stuff. I looked them up on-line and found out that (a) the Massachusetts Pirates are a team in the National Arena League (what?), and (b) old friend Tre' Jackson is one of their offensive linemen. I looked around but didn't see Tre' standing around the gate anywhere.

Anyway, the Pirates lost their playoff game to the Carolina Cobras on Saturday night, 30-26.

So what do we think about Jimmy G’s struggles? For a guy who lit it up in his first games for the Niners and received an enormous contract before getting hurt last year, it seems that the narrative around him since before preseason even started was negative – “He needs to prove himself,” “Shanahan may move on if Jimmy doesn’t get it together,” etc. Now he has a terrible practice in which he throws five straight picks and an awful few series in a preseason game and the sharks seem to be circling.

What’s going on?

They've gone 10-22 in the first two years of the Shanahan / Lynch era. If they don't improve this year, heads are going to roll. So yes, the sharks are circling.

The Niners can get out of Jimmy's contract after this year with only $4.2 million in dead money($22.4 million saved) if they release him by April 1, 2020. So, it's put up or shut up time.
Wow. Had no idea it was basically a 2 year deal. Big year for Jimmy G. Have to give him some time to come back from ACL though.

You do and every single year there is massive overreaction to pre-season play.

Yeah – I think what I’m puzzled by is that it seemed like the story with Jimmy turned sharply negative over this offseason after the hosannas that accompanied his performance a year earlier. I get that as he goes, so does the team. And I get that the FO is ready to see results. But of Lynch and Shanahan’s 32 games, Jimmy has been on the field for less than a third of them. And while he did drop off a bit last year from the previous season’s highs, it wasn’t exactly like he fell off a cliff – he went from a 96.2 rating to a 90 before the injury.

It just seems weird to be scapegoating suggesting they’re ready to move on based on 9 games of production -- 5 of which were extremely good. And not to ramp up the irresponsible speculation machine, but it does make me wonder if there's something else going on behind the scenes -- that the FO feels like he's not fully on board with their program or (as we heard whispers of in NE) that they think he's a little soft.

The fairest criticism is that he's reckless with his own safety, as a scrambler with good (but not otherworldly) athleticism. His passing decision-making in 2017 was excellent.

He is a fascinating case. He is entering into his 6th season and is 27 years old, which is an age that most would agree should be part of a QB's prime, best years of their careers. But he has only started 10 games in his career (has played in 26 total games, but 11 of those were mop up duty for the pats were he had a total of 31 pass attempts). I'd argue that he still has not played enough football for us to definitively say if he is a good QB or not.

I'd also argue that his decision making is part of the problem. In 2017 he threw an INT on 2.8% of attempts and in 2018 he threw an INT on 3.4% of attempts. Those numbers are not good. Looking at just 2018 across the league those INT rates puts him in the company of: Darnold (3.6%) Tannehill (3.3%) Dalton (3.0%) Trubisky (2.8%) Newton (2.8%) Bortles (2.7%) Keenum (2.6%). There are a few other guys in that range that had a lot fewer attempts that I left off, but I think the takeaway is that he turns the ball over just as about as often as a lot of guys that we'd all agree are not good passers.

INT% is most certainly not the only measure one could use to evaluate a QB and that stat has a lot of year-to-year volatility (Aaron Rodgers was at 2.5% in 2017 and 0.3% in 2018). But when I look at Jimmy I see a QB that just hasn't actually played all that much and is turning the ball over a lot. I wouldn't be surprised if the game hasn't actually 'slowed down' for Jimmy yet and that coming off a long term injury isn't helping him. I'll agree with anyone that says he has the physical tools to play the position but he has had no where near the number of actual game reps that a promising QB prospects normally has before their age 27 season. Compare him to a guy like Goff that is 24, entering his 4th season and has already started 38 games. I'd be willing to bet that Goff already processes the game differently then Jimmy does, just from having more reps. It's fascinating because for Jimmy to get to ~40 games started he will be pushing 30. 30 years old is by no means the QB cliff that it has been in the past, but his peak physical years are not lining up with the game experience you'd expect a QB prospect of his esteem would have.

Shane Vereen has been hired by Fox to be part of its college football coverage. I didn’t know until today that he was not on an NFL roster last season.
