And you wonder why the Patriots always win. This is why. Because the rest of the NFL is stupid.
Also because having the greatest QB and greatest HC in NFL history makes it so you can really be patient and look for bargains. They approach free agency very well most of the time, but those two cover up a whole lot of holes.

Peace out Trey. Can't wait to see those numbers. Detroit hasn't learned a thing. Will be another mediocre season there.

This is why we've seen the Pats focus on trades for vets recently. The cap is going up so fast that every year's crop of FA's becomes the highest-paid, almost regardless of talent. So the value is in guys still under contract they signed a couple of years earlier when the cap was lower. You get those guys through trades.

Well the Pats won't have to worry about facing Flowers for a few years anyway. Bummer to see him gone but again, not surprising. Bennett is a sweet replacement. Hoping now for some further development from Wise.

Draft needs now include DL.

Not sure what his markets gonna look like but would love to take a shot at Ziggy Ansah (who presumably won't be back in Detroit) if the price is right

Intrigued to see how they choose to spend money.
Buying up Jupiter.

Like MMS, I am sad yet not surprised. This one hurts more than Brown, since he was homegrown, spent more time here, and you need subs at his position more.

If the Patriots sign a Justin Houston or Ziggy Ansah, then draft a DE on Day 1 and/or Day 2, that'll be fine. It'll be fine no matter what. The fact that Flowers lands in the other conference, as opposed to within our own division, takes the sting out of it a bit, too.

Edit tweaks

Why would they need an extra 2 players to replace Flowers considering they've traded for Bennett?

A stronger DT could reduce the need for Flowers's replacement from having to work the middle as much as Flowers did
That's great, but the poster I originally responded to wasn't talking about signing a DT. He said they could replace Flowers with Houston/Ansah and another DE in the draft. That seemed to me like a poor use of resources considering they already brought in Bennett.

Um...because Bennett is on the older side, Clayborn is no great shakes, and we need to get younger at the position since Bennett, while possibly still productive, is pretty old. Ditto, though less so, when it comes to a potential Houston signing.

For 2019, Bennett should be pretty close to a Flowers equivalent, against both the pass and run. It's moving forward beyond that that the Flowers loss will be largely felt. But I guess worry about 2020 later.

Draft a DL. Trade for one. Rivers and Wise improve. Dynamic secondary with the young guys all improving. Getting Bentley back at LB. The D should be pretty solid.

I hope BB has faith in the glide path he's seen from Wise, and has some reason to hope Rivers is anything. It's an area of serious need, ALL positions on the DL.

I'm all for drafting a DE, just think signing another expensive player at the position is pointless. They already have Bennett, no need to replace Flowers with 3 guys. If the price is right then yes, they could cut Clayborn and go after someone else in the market.

The Deion Branch Syndrome.

Of all the players that have left that Pats for big money, how many made a Pro Bowl with another team? Maybe Adam Vinatieri? Who's got the answer?

EDIT: Curtis Martin made the 2004 all-pro team and Vinatieri made the 2014 all-pro team and Talib made the 2016 all-pro team and Chandler Jones made the 2017 all-pro team.

Welker? Talib?

EDIT: never mind, I thought you said 'Super Bowl'. Still, those are two of the few guys who left and were more or less successful.

Flowers is a good player and he should be just fine with Detroit. We'll never see him again though, not for 4 more years anyway, as Det is not making the Super Bowl, and the Pats don't play the Lions until 2022. So he may as well be playing in Timbuktu.

If they're wicked expensive, I agree. I would rather have splurged on Flowers. But my sense is that Houston and Ziggy will not command 16-17 million dollars per year. I like the idea of getting two veterans - slightly less production for less $$$ combined - and drafting one or two (at least) young linemen to develop as eventual top tier replacements.
