Also, whether the ratings have been affected or not, I think most of us just think Minihane greatly improves the show (up from horrible fucking disaster to maybe listenable if all the podcasts are used up and you're sick of your music).

Yes, those are the most recent numbers that were just released.  Compared it to the last month that it was Dennis and Callahan without Kirk.

Other than the Sox in the playoffs and World Series where WEEI as a whole received a bump, Dennis and Callahan’s numbers have remained almost exactly the same with and without Kirk Minhane.

Things I learn from D&C.  So Tsarnaev's mother gets weeks of crap for being responsible for the behavior of her children, and Remy is blameless because parents are not responsible for their children.   Got it.

Nor is technically white.
Nor is she Gerry Callahan's friend.

Come on.
Hey now.  John Dennis took the time this morning to remind all his listeners that neither he, nor Callahan are friends with Jerry Remy.  They think he's a nice guy, and they have a "professional relationship", but that's it.  He said it like 3 times, "we are not friends."

And Callahan fofllowed up with ever so nice, "I don't think Jerry Remy has a lot of friends.  Which is not surprising as he's probably spent most of his time dealing with his kids behaviors."

In fairness...and I am loathe to even offer much in the way of fairness to D&C...but in fairness, one of those parents is at least publicly contrite while the other is in denial.

It's too late to fix WEEI.  It's been pathetic for years.  As soon as The Sports Hub offered an alternative, radio dials spun rapidly, underscoring the WEEI wasteland.  Destroy it and start over.

Jerry Thornton was on today with Danny Picard. So is Thornton on WEEI a thing now? I used to be a frequent Barstool reader and his columns were awful. Cant stand him on the radio.

Thornton was on D&C a couple weeks back on what was supposedly a sort of tryout for the afternoon gig. It doesn't seem like he will be getting that job and him going on EEI screwed up his thing on F&M so it isn't surprising that he is now picking up scraps at EEI.

Well, what was his F&M thing, 20 minutes every Friday? I'd say that a couple of hours all across the week on WEEI would be better for him than F&M.

Now, if it cost him his Comcast gig after Patriots games, that might be a different story. Although a) it might have done that and b) he might justify it to himself that exposure or no, all he was really doing was reading emails and that a semi-regular, if part time, radio gig was better anyways.

Edit: correcting spellcheck assumptions

Last week, Mut and Merloni spent at least 45 minutes of one debating whether Bill Parcells or Ty Law should go into the Patriots Hall of Fame. The great illusion in sports is pretending it matters. They could talk about the upcoming NFL draft, the Bruins in the playoffs, the Red Sox slow start or the Boston Marathon and they chose: Law or Parcells.

WEEI needs to send Mut packing to Salkmeterville.

Weird that you'd single out Mutnanski there when literally every show on both stations discussed the Parcells/Law/Clayborn HOF thing that day

Good lord, when have the four topics you listed NOT been talked about to death everywhere everyday for the past two weeks. I think 45 minutes on the day the HOF ballot was released is the least they could do.

98.5 spent about the same amount of time on it. Beetle actually had a solid take on Parcells, who he says in no way should ever be eligible for the Pats HOF since he was actively pursuing a job in another organization while the Patriots were in the midst of the playoffs.

And yes, stuff like this merits talk radio discussion.

At the end of the show last Friday, Mut read a graphic article about a man having sex with a beer can. It was highly graphic and caused me to change the channel. I thought, Dude knows he's getting canned.

I always feel bad for anyone who loses their job especially someone who has a young family. That said he just isn't good at the job and just flat out isn't very bright. At times I thought maybe he was just pretending to make Merloni look better but I think it was just him. The perfect example was last year talking about pulling Lester from the playoff rotation. It looks completely insane now but it didn't seem much more sane at the time.

I will say, I was driving home from Amherst on Sunday and WEEI was the only option and Thornton was hosting a show with Butch Stearns (legit idiot) and he really wasn't that bad.  He's quick on his feet and knows enough about football to be an enjoyable listen.  I know he's gotten some flak for his F&M segments, but I found him to be a pretty good listen for the hour or so I was tuned in.

John Ryder is an awesome radio host....I think this hurts them more than the other decisions they've made in the past couple years (at a talent level).
Dude is just a solid voice of radio reason, Entercom really f'ed up here.

Huge mistake by EEI on the Ryder firing. They should have either fired Adams and given Ryder that slot, or put Ryder in the slot they just took from Mutt.

Could Ryder just be an unfortunate victim of cost cutting?  He's been there 16 years and he's in a relatively small role (though IMO a key one as the wrap-around guy for Sox broadcasts).  Overpaid for what he's doing (in corporate's eyes) but to broaden his role (like officially making Planet Mikey into Planet Mikey and John) would mean having to pay him more.  Easier to ditch him and spread his tasks around to other employees or a cheaper hire.

It would been much better savings to fire Mike Adams and have Ryder take over that slot. He is better than Adams.

Um, based on the news yesterday, Ryder's gone now and Adams is gone when his contract (mercifully) expires, while Mutnansky (who presumably has a longer contract than either, and probably cheaper, given his experience) takes over at night, doing the Red Sox pre- and post-, as well as handling the night time shifts that don't have a Red Sox game.

WEEI saved money here and it doesn't preclude them from showing Adams the door the moment his contract is up.

Apparently it's a zero-sum game with the budget for WEEI. Spending $ to bring in the new midday guys (Benz and Fauria) started an avalanche of savings-generating moves elsewhere (regardless of merit).

If anyone's interested Ordway and Shepperd covered the Mut and Ryder moves yesterday during hour two of their show.  They also talk about Salk at some length (asshole) and how the new guy from Pittsburgh is already dead man walking, Seattle v2.0 etc.

Yeah, maybe Chad can confirm when Adams contract is (as was said above) "mercifully" up?  I'd also love to see an update on the D&C negotiations.  Aren't they officially up in September?

I've always liked Ryder, as well, although, for the life of me, I can't think of one thing of substance he's ever said.  Just a recap guy with a nice voice.

Am definitely going to miss Ryder. Professional, knowledgable, objective, and a radio voice that will always elicit memories of post-game wraps from some of the best game's I've seen and heard since I've had a driver's license. I know the complaints about the midday show won't end with Mut's departure. I'm sorry to say I will always love WEEI the way comedians and writers will always have a soft spot for NBC, but you'd think the new management would have learned the lesson about bringing in an out-of-towner with ESPNRadio pedigree from the last group's missteps with Salk.

Sheppard mentions in this that when Felger was a beat writer he had a reputation for being lazy and taking days off to golf. Sound familiar? I guess he has more in common with the Texas Tough Guy than he'd like you to believe. I can't believe I'm still amazed at how inherently fraudulent sports talk radio is.

Safe to assume Mut has a longer term contract and Ryder was either up or didn't have one?

Ryder will land on his feet I think.

I made the mistake of listening to it yesterday, and the only thing of note that I remember is Ordway saying that Mutt worked hard to improve and even called Glenn for advice. It's interesting that Ordway portrays himself as an expert on the Boston sports radio business, yet he didn't even have the self awareness to realize that his own show was at best mediocre for years before he was rightfully put out to pasture.

Christian Arcand crushing his debut on WEEI right now. He's the guy, I'd love to see paired with Minihane in the mornings.
