I think it's actually a smart move that would get some much-needed attention to start with, and could grab headlines on a regular basis given Curt's williness to say anything.

Then move Salk with Haggs to the Midday or something.  That wouldn't be awful.

Salk and Haggs would be a decent midday show, but an abomination in afternoon drive.  Awful.  I don't care enough about what either of them has to say.

Minihane and Schilling would be a terrific show in either morning or afternoon drive.  Maybe it would have a short shelf life, but it would be awfully entertaining. Both are opinionated and engaging, which is what you want out of talk show personalities.

Salk and Schilling would have the potential to turn into the "Curt Schilling Show with Mike Salk," which would get tiresome to listen to.

Since when has Schilling ever given the indication that his opinion was less than 100% correct, no matter what the topic? He doesn't like to work in grey areas, that's for sure.

On baseball, he'd be interesting. He always has been because of his approach to the game and I've enjoyed what he's had to say on that topic, even if he never shuts up on ESPN broadcasts. But on any other topic I'd imagine he'd become an insufferable blowhard and not fun to listen to on the radio.

This is why I'd want to see him paired with someone like Minihane rather than Salk.  Minihane will stand up to Schilling, I think.  Still likely to become unlistenable after a while, but less likely to become The Schilling and "You're right, Curt" Show right from the get-go.

In the long run though, I can't see Schilling taking a regular radio gig, be it on EEI or elsewhere.  I imagine he enjoys the baseball schedule and having most of the winter off.

Lets say this happens tomorrow.  6 weeks from now, outside of politics what can Curt possibly talk about?  As entertaining as he might be in general, I dont know if he is capable of having a 4 hour discussion of non-baseball sports every day.  That could be an utter disaster, so EEI please make that happen!

If they are really desperate for ratings, pair him with Gerry in the morning and turn it into a Rush Limbaugh alternative

I believe Curt is a big Steelers fan, so I'm sure he's at least somewhat insightful when it comes to football.  Basketball and hockey though?

Is Merloni all that well versed in other sports?  Zolak?

That's not to say they're great, but I don't think it's necessarily a drawback that Schilling might not be all that knowledgeable about other sports.  Frankly, I don't think it makes him any different than the non-athlete talk show hosts...it's not as though they're the sharpest knives in the drawer when talking about any given sport.

I forgot about that.  I also forgot that not having intelligent insight has never stopped Curt from talking.  So he can probably run a show, it just wont be particularly smart radio talk

Its not happening at the moment, but Felger and Mazz did some some semi-intelligent talk while they were climbing up the ratings board

Listened to D&C as they opened this morning..they are all over this guy.  Said he was fired flat out, and that it was his efforts that directly led to their big fall in the ratings.  It's been open warfare several times this morning already, talking about how he forced out Meter, and fired just about every other member of their staff, including producers, not to mention others like Ordway and Wolfe.
Also said it was Brown's vision that they sound like ESPN, no politics, nothing controversial, can't mention anyone at 98.5.
They're also claiming that now at long last the gloves can come off and they get to fight back.
Pretty good radio so far, sounds like Brown was a serious a-hole.

Fight back? Name calling? Talking politics? #sportsdebates? Wow, finally the gloves come off! i bet it makes no difference and they're fired in 18 months.

Yawn.  I thought there was no decline in ratings?  Now it is Brown's fault?

The RedSox have capped off a remarkable season and are headed to the playoffs possibkly to play a Francona team. The Bruins fell just short of another Cup and start teh season Thursday. The Patriots are 4-0, just beat their first "real" opponent, and must go forward without one of their most important players and leaders. and, if I read these posts correctly, D&C spent their morning cackling like children about someone they dont like at work getting fired.

Accepting for the sake of argument that  "sports radio" can be good,  how is singing "ding, dong, the witch is dead" great radio?

The only boss that I care about is my boss. I don't care if your boss is "mean" or "doesn't let you talk politics" or fired your buddies. It's completely immaterial, do your job. If you don't like it, you can quit.

I mean, isn't the above what the hosts of the EEI morning show essentially say about players that complain about the GM or manager/coach?

For a couple of "tough guys" Dennis and Callahan are a bunch of babies.

It was interesting that they FINALLY admitted that Meter was essentially fired.  The spin they made when it happened was so transparent.

They also basically openly chastized Minahane, who took it in stride and played along.  At one point he let it out that he "has nothing to worry about" in regards to his future with the station, and when Gerry called him out on that, he joked that he meant because his wife makes plenty of money and can just be a stay at home Dad blah blah blah.  But it's obvious he's got a more viable future with EEI (before they go belly up) than D or C.

Entercom Boston hires Phil Zachary as vice president and market manager

October 1, 2013 01:43 PM
By Chad Finn, Boston.com Columnist
Entercom Boston announced Tuesday it has hired Phil Zachary as its new vice president and market manager. The announcement comes a day after Jeff Brown left Entercom for Cumulus Media in Atlanta.
Zachary comes to Entercom from Curtis Media Group in Raleigh, N.C., where he held the title of president and chief operating officer.
He has strong New England ties, having grown up in Connecticut and graduated from Holy Cross. He has worked in Providence, Worcester and Boston, and once served as the operations manager at the former WITS 1510, where he oversaw Bruins and Red Sox play by play.
He will start at Entercom Boston on Oct. 21.

Not surprising. I may have listened to a total of 20 hours of Salk and Holley since they started, just unlistenable to me. It was nice having Dale & Holley back for at least one day last week with Jackie MacMullen.

I really liked Andy Hart when he was on there as well as on the Patriots Weekly show.
No idea what he knows about the other sports but I like him on the radio.

I wanted to like Salk because I'm no fan of the other guys but he is too whiny and I never find anything he says interesting.

Espn radio (national) is actually pretty good with the exception of Colin Cowherd. A station like ESPN, but with localized coverage would be much better than either of the terrible stations in town.

Over at Entercom Boston, the upcoming departure of one-time market manager Julie Kahn is expected at the end of this week. She joined Entercom's Boston cluster back in October 2000 as GM for WAAF 107.3 and WQSX/Star 93.7. In early 2004, she became Entercom Boston market manager. And in 2006, she was also named Entercom's New England manager overseeing Entercom's properties in Springfield and Providence. However, her role was diminished when now-departed Jeff Brown was hired as Boston market manager in 2011.

From the linked article:

One aggravating ESPN staple that he has adopted is the chronic teasing of what comes next, right after this break, without sharing all of the key information. It seems here that telling the listener to hang on for a piece of information is a pretty good way to get him or her to change the station in the interim.

Yep. I stopped listening to the show around the same time I stopped clicking on those "You won't believe what happened next" links.

I don't agree.
Salk is incredibly boring.  We all know someone who starts to say something and within a second or two you know what point they are going to make, but it takes them another twenty seconds to finish their thought.  The whole time the listener is getting ancy, or bored, or thinking about something else because they already know what is going to be said: that is me listening to Salk.  He's not dumb, he's just obvious and bland.
Holley is pretty good.

Edit: That wasn't trolling by soxfan.  You wrote something as if it was your brilliant new idea, but it was explicitly stated in the article.

I thought, and Finn alludes to it as well, that Holley and Dale Arnold had good chemistry and a good show overall.  That show was broken up because Holley wanted more money with his new contract and the powers that be decided that he was worth the money but not if he remained in the mid-day slot.  From a strict radio/ratings stand point, breaking up that show was the absolute wrong move since at the time, it was the only WEEI show that was winning its time slot versus the Hub.  They lost a good show to put on two mediocre at best shows instead.

Maybe the solution, for the time being anyway, is to replace Salk with Arnold.  Doubt it happens since the 2-6 slot is likely to interfere with Dale's NESN obligations.  Doubt Dale chooses WEEI over NESN a second time.

Ok. Holley has always been a little overrated to me. For all his Patriots insider access where are the scoops? why isn't Holley's chemistry with Belichick better? Many of those Monday interviews were a train wreck and were better with Andy Hart or Bob Halloran guest hosting. You think his lightning round game is good? Holley and Ordway never had great chemistry either.

I agree with this completely and posted pretty much the same thing in one of these threads. I wanted to like Salk because I wanted an alternative to F&M. I gave him a few months but find his "takes" completely boring. At this point I just find him whiney and impossible to listen to.
I rather like Holley and would at least listen to it sometimes if he was paired with someone I could deal with. I think Arnold is pretty bland but he says something interesting on occasion.
Holley and Minehane would probably be their best option but I can't see them doing that with the improved AM ratings.

I agree. Very weird to see it discussed so openly. Would be a real disaster for Salk, uprooting everything to make a run in Boston and ending up on "special projects" inside of a year.

As for afternoon drive, word is Zachary wants a new partner for Holley. At the top of the wish list is Michael’s former Boring Broadsheet co-worker, Michael Smith, who currently works at ESPN.

This needs to happen.
