Absolutely horrible news and unfortunately not unexpected. Such devastating news for his family and all of Red Sox Nation. It gets harder to fight it off each time and I'm afraid this will be the last time. He has never been better at his job and we have been gifted recently with Jerry and Eck in the booth together. I am sad.

Shit. I realize it's selfish, but I'm so enjoying his work this season.

Get well quick, RemDog. You want to be around the ballpark for playoffs this year!

I love Jerry Remy more than almost anyone else I've never met. And what's crazy is, he has gotten so much better as he's gotten older. You'd think he, of all people, could afford to just coast, but he's worked at his craft and become not just the most beloved analyst in Red Sox history, but one of the best in the game. The three-man booth was tremendous, and I'll be rooting and praying that we get 162 games of it next year, and the year after that, and the year after that...

Since 2008:
Cancer 3 times, an infection from surgery, pneumonia twice, depression, and his son in jail for murder.

What a difficult life he has had this past decade. Tough to bet against someone like him, since he always bounces back.

Cancer is bad enough. Do they have to add more Steve Lyons on top of it?
Awful news. I would love it if Eck just took over the color position all together as opposed to just an increased shuffle with Lyons and (please God No) Gomes, but that's likely what will be the result.

Truly a shame, Remy is a legend. I like Dave O’Brien fine enough, but I consider Remy and Orsillo to be an iconic booth duo.

Worst news of the year. When Remy was out and they put all those substitute guys in I learned to appreciate him so much. Remy does a great job. Only Eck does as well. Watching the ESPN broadcast the other night I kept commenting, these guys stink compared to Obrien and Remy or Eckersly. My thoughts and prayers are with Remy.

Just devastating, heartbreaking news. Thoughts are with you Jerry, and your family.

Like others have mentioned, his work the past two seasons has been among the best I've heard from any analyst in the game. He's so great at his job, this just makes it more sad to hear.

This is not the news I wanted to see today. Remy has been through so much in the last 15-20 years. May he come through this healthy and hope the Red Sox bring him joy in these next few months as he fights.

Do we know what sort of cancer he has now, or what sort he’s had in the past?

I’m far from an expert, but can’t cancer diagnosis range from anywhere from “you have weeks to live” to “we can treat this with a few appointments”?

Here’s hoping his condition isn’t severe/advanced.

The silver lining here may be that since he’s had cancer in the past, it might be likely they caught this extremely early. My stepdad recently completed treatment for prostate cancer, but has to go back fairly frequently for follow up checks, to make sure it hasn’t come back.

Damn cancer. If you live long enough you get it in one form or another. And if you've had it and live long enough it comes back. I hope we can lick it one of these days. Godspeed Jerry. Fight until you can't.

Man, this is gutting. Here's hoping it's again treatable and he's able to kick cancer's ass once and for all. He's been so, so good in the booth this year. The three-man booth with Eck was nothing short of fantastic and I'd wished we were in for more of that for the rest of the season. Hope he's able to get well, again.

Cancer sucks.

Although I have no inside knowledge, the tweet that Jerry has been diagnosed with cancer again is probably not completely accurate. It is extremely likely that this is a recurrence (it has been reported that he previously experienced 5 relapses).

Jerry, Eck & DOB are amazing together. The stories from the 70's aren't hokey or old or lame. They're always interesting, and the perspective from Eck & Jerry is usually from different ends of the same story. They told a story about going to Studio 54 one day, and had totally different anecdotes from the same few days. I think DOB has made Jerry better.

I hope for a swift ass kicking of cancer. I want many more years of Jerry Remy.

Terrible news. Like others here, I really loved how Eck and Remy played off one another and I really hope to hear it again. Fortunately, if you're going to battle cancer there isn't a better place than boston to do it.

The orgasm of the Thursday, Friday and Saturday broadcasts this past weekend with the three man booth have come crashing down to Earth in the worst way.

Oh god damn it, this sucks. I don't even have words other than my thoughts are with him and his family. Hope to have him back in the booth soon.

I'll echo those who said 2018 has probably been his best work. He was already one of the better color guys in the game the past 15+ years, but he's really stepped it up the past couple.

Get well soon.

Well put. I agree. I always thought his colorman work was good, but he’s brought it to another level the last couple of years. When a guy points out things in a game you didn’t see or think of, then he’s really worth his salt. He’s really been doing that with the best of them. Get well soon, Jerry.

I'll echo that he has been great this year, doing some of the best work of his career.

Selfish and wishful thinking, but I hope he bounces back fast and is in the booth asap. And in the meantime maybe Eck will take on a few more games. Someone at NESN should be on the phone with Todd Walker today as well. This year has been too good to have it come down to Lyons and Gomes down the stretch.

From last year, ESPN reported that he had a recurrence in June 2017 of lung cancer, which was first diagnosed and treated in 2008. The article states he also had recurrences in 2013 and twice in 2017.

Lung cancer is a bad one; he's been lucky to have beat it back all these previous times. The five-year survival rate is approximately 15 percent in the US. I will say that I have no idea if he has a better or worse chance considering his past success at dealing with the illness.

Edited to add: This really blows. Good luck Remy -- beat the odds again!

I'm not an oncologist but over time cancer tends to become resistant to specific chemotherapy drugs. They start with the best ones that are most likely to work. When the cancer stops responding to that chemotherapy drug, they move to whatever is considered second best for that specific patient. In general as you move down the list the chemo drugs become less effective and/or harder on the body with worse side effects. Eventually the results are simply not there.

So in general, each recurrence is a step in the bad direction.

Again, I'm not a doctor, let alone an oncologist. I'm just a guy who had to learn a bit about cancer and cancer treatment along the way.

Hopefully Remy does well.

This blows. I rode Pan-Mass this year, plan on making it an annual event. We need the big breakthrough on this awful condition. Godspeed Jerry.

This is very sad indeed. It was wonderful when he was able to come back this year and he has been great this season. I hope he can fight it off one more time.

I often find myself thinking "Damn, how does this guy even get up and come to work every day?" when I'm watching a game. I mean, I don't think there's been a game when I watch him where I don't think about what happened with his son. I don't know how you handle that sort of thing well enough emotionally to do anything productive in life again, and certainly not anything productive and public. But he shows up. When you add in lung cancer - and good God, who beats lung cancer back as much as Rem has? - and depression and more cancer and pneumonia and more depression and more cancer, well, I just don't know. I marvel at the man. Many, many people would just give up. He's doesn't strike as an optimist by nature, he's been dealt a really terrible hand in his last decade, yet, there he is, in the booth, being RemDawg, giggling, telling tales with Eck, helping DOB not sound like such a schmuck, and absolutely adding value to the experience of being a Red Sox fan. No question, he is as interwoven with this team as a color guy can be at this point.

I hope he keeps fighting. But I'll understand if he doesn't. Respect to you, Mr. Remy.

Thats too bad. Wish him the best. From a selfish perspective I will miss him in the booth with Eck. Those two clicked and even made KOB bearable

It's seemed for a long time that being at the ballpark is what makes him happiest. He hates his off days. I know he's said in the past that he has trouble watching the games when he's off. Doing the games is his medicine, and being deprived of that, again, is going to be really, really hard for him.

Best of luck to him in recovery. I think this year might be his best season in the booth to date and the trio of him, O'Brien, and Eck is easily my favorite presentation I've ever had the pleasure to watch.
