Bill Archer makes a fairly convincing argument that this payoff to Warner was in return for his support for Bin Hammam's bid for the presidency of FIFA.

It's not surprising that The Telegraph jumped at the opportunity to link the money to WC bidding corruption while burying its note on the presidency bid deep within the article. Not that WC bidding was free from corruption (duh), but I agree that this looks more like some previously unknown financial details behind Warner and Bin Hammam's removal from FIFA.

The organization is so broken that any real smoking gun would need the power of several nukes to make a difference anyway. There's no cleaning up FIFA until, I dunno, it doesn't exist anymore. Nobody's going to boycott the WC.

I love that the corruption is not in doubt, its just the question of what influence was bought and sold.

If it is indeed the Bin Hammam bid for the FIFA presidency that is being investigated then dollars to donuts one of the FBI's key informants is an elderly gentleman from Switzerland.

One of the FBI's key informants is one of Warner's sons, who they nicked when he was in the U.S.

From all appearances, Sepp hasn't really had a whole lot to do with Warner's and Bin Hammam's downfalls.  They seem to have managed it all by themselves, with some help from one or two principled Caribbean officials and Chuck Blazer.
