There's your move to clear roster space for Workman.

But the better heading for the thread really should be "Cubs acquire Sox left-hander"

For whom? Rizzo?

Apparently no one at the moment.

Can we at least have a trade finalized before starting the thread?

I'm no Doubront fan, but this feels like selling low. Oh well.
you're right, it is.  he is talented, but given what he's said recently and how he's pitched of course, this is not surprising.  But it wouldn't be shocking if he regains some of his form.  I can't say I'm sorry to see him go, though.

At the end of last season, there was discussion of a Doubront for Dexter Fowler swap, and most of us thought the Sox would be getting fleeced.

That one is starting to really hurt as time goes by.
And it took how many at-bats before he "arrived"? Patience when you are contending is hard but when you are rebuilding (and hopefully no-one is willing to still debate this) it is a must.

Is there a chance the Sox trade Lester, Lackey, Peavy, and Doubront in the span of a week?

C'mon significant compensation!
Please. We're dealing with the Cubs. How about that significant compensation for Theo? Don't hold your breath. Getting robbed by the Cubs again.

Change of scenery. Sometimes you just have to pack it up and move on. There was 0% likelihood that the team was going to give him more opportunities over guys like Barnes, Ranaudo, Workman, Escobar, etc. He's incredibly talented but he used up all of everyone's patience.

Huge innings in the World Series last year, though. What a mercurial player.

PTBNL probably means it was one of the new draftees, I doubt a terribly high one for Doubront.

I wouldn't be surprised if we don't learn the PTBNL until after the Rule 5 draft.

Another interesting possibility. There is going to be a massive roster crunch if the rest of the week goes like we think it might.

That meeting with Farrell after the Toronto blowup must've gone some kind of awful if the Red Sox were willing to give up a 26-year-old pitcher for what will probably amount to a High-A lottery ticket or a Double-A retread.

I get Doubront had a bad attitude and some conditioning issues and his performance really wasn't all that hot, but man, beyond a bummer that this is how it ended.

Sold low, but sometimes you have to. You need a team with guys that buy in. He was not taking his role well per his recent comments. You either have to hash that out with him or get him out the door.

While the change of scenery may help it did not seem like the status quo was going to result in a quality pitcher in Boston. I am glad they cut bait and didn't linger.

Nope. Can't trade draftees for a year and PTBNL have to be announced within 6 months.

Good move by Theo.  Hope this doesn't turn out like Theo's last reclamation project - Jake Arrieta

You give a guy to pitch, and learn, and pitch and learn, and pitch and learn, and pitch and learn, in games that don't really matter ... and he might just figure it out.

Some baseball players are blessed like Pedroia and are able to come up, assume leadership roles, figure everything out and contribute very early. Some take years.

I'm pretty sure that a PTBNL must be named within six months of the transaction, and he cannot play in the major leagues in the interval.

Yeah, Doubront's still only 26. I bet he has at least one above average season at some point over the rest of his career. He'll need a better fastball than the one he's currently got, though.

Not just on the 40-man, but for the AAA & AA minor league phases as well.

The Rule 5 Draft will take place in early December. That's well within 6 months.

Truth.

Are there any Cubs players/prospects on the DL who would be interesting?  That could explain the PTBNL part.

The other possibility is that it's someone on the Cubs' 40 man and the Sox don't have roster space to add them right now pending other deals.

I'd say 'Dog's statement is the most likely because of the potential 40 crunch for the Sox.

His stuff ought to play a lot better vs NL lineups and especially in some of the low-offense road parks (SD, LAD).
