Not sure but to give credit where it is due I thought they were great most of the week (I didn't hear any of it today).

Agreed. Good to hear their human side with all of the corona stuff. Definitely interesting to hear Murray’s “evolution” from “fake news hoax” to fully accepting that this is a real thing.
It also made their tangents into Brady talk more tolerable

When did they have the MGH dr/chief of medicine/whomever on? I heard Arcand play a replay of it tonight. Seemed like a really good interview with a guy who is clearly an expert in his field. I was actually surprised that they got him (he may have been related to someone because I think he referenced a host's sister during the interview?) but it was a real and informative interview

NBCSN showed the 2013 Game 7 Bruins-Leafs last night. Gotta figure if the Leafs had closed that game out with a 4-2 or 5-2 win, Jim Murray never comes back to 98.5. His on-air reaction to this game, which was really, really funny and entertaining, changed the entire trajectory of his career.

even if ne goes 10-6 its a bad thing if hoyer beats out stid because hoyer is 35 and does it but if stid does it that couild prolong your dysty

If they go 10-6 with Hoyer it means that almost definitely the young guys on the rest of the roster stepped up, which is still a great thing because they'll have a ton of cap space in a year if they still need a qb.

I mean, Snell's position is also stupid. The "I don't care if the season is cut in half, I want full pay" attitude is a complete non-starter. He also doesn't seem to understand that if the league doesn't resume and the Rays go bankrupt, his contract isn't worth the paper it's printed on.

You think there won't be 2 dozen other teams lining up to pay Snell a lot of money?

I don’t think this is the point. Of course there would be other teams willing to sign a quality pitcher. The issues are:

1. Here’s a millionaire complaining about making more millions by playing a sport when many, many people in this country are suffering severe financial hardship

2. This same guy plays a sport that has significant issues with remaining viable, and might never fully recover from a lost season. Especially when the lost season was driven by attitudes such as mentioned in #1 above.

I love the game and hope Snell’s attitude is an outlier among other players. It would be encouraging for other high profile players to come out with support for moving forward with an agreement for reduced salaries based on reduced games.

What it comes down to is people want their baseball so players should risk their lives, the lives of their family and loved ones, the lives of stadium staff and workers (who aren't all young and healthy) so billionaires can make some money. I miss baseball too, but I am team player not owner here. The players are taking the risks not the owners. Also if you're gonna claim financial hardship to curry public favor you should also be willing to show that hardship with some balance sheets but they'll never open those books.

3. He's concerned about his health, but only when it means taking a discount. He's ok with the risk otherwise. Which is a bit disingenous, imo. If you're really concerned about the risks then you just don't play, period.

But I guess this thinking is just par for baseball. It's amazing they're still viable with how they continuously cut off their nose to spite their face.

Mazz is an idiot. It's well-documented.
He believes the Pats should put Parcells in the Hall of Fame for reasons unrelated to anything he ever did in terms of coaching and winning games, so, yes, he is.

That said, I kind of understand Snell's position here: players were told they'd be paid for the whole season if there was no season but now they're saying they'll get half-pay if there's only a half-season. To me, that doesn't add up. If you were willing to pay them to not play for a whole year, you should be also willing to pay them to not play for the first 2-3 months of the season. Not everyone makes tens of millions of dollars per season and some of the guys who make the league minimum or somewhere around there may not be able to afford just a half-season of pay. We can all debate how big the violin that should be played for them should be, of course, but I understand the principle here.

They did not get told that they would be paid for the whole season. The owners gave the players $170 million in advance to divide up for the first 2 months of the season in case the season got cancelled. The players, as part of the deal reached at the end of March, also agreed not to sue for their full salaries. Also, people need to remember that the league is also granting every player a year of service time(or the same amount of service time as the year before if you only played part of the year in the majors) if the season is cancelled. So the players get a chance to get their arb raises or in Mookie's and other's cases become a free agent. Also included in the agreement in March is that players' salaries would be reconsidered if there is no revenue from attendance.

People keep making this point like Snell has some bizarre logic. Most people calculate risk by potential reward.

Would you fight prime Mike Tyson for $1,000,000?

What about for $10,000,000?

Is that really a weird question?

Tyson is a tad scarier then Covid 19, imo. Even for 10 mil I don't think I'd get in the ring with Iron Mike. A couple haymakers would probably kill me.

Saw this, though I haven't listed to them in forever. Just pure idiocy.

In the one glimpse into Belichick in A Football Life, he spent time in a meeting admonishing the players for a lack of enthusiasm and encouraging the players to celebrate.

Great pull, and a great point.
A lot of media folks have use the Patriot Way slogan (something which BB never says, btw) as their own cudgel against players they don't like or behavior they don't find appropriate. But Bill is the guy who worships Lawrence Taylor. I think he's okay with guys who are outside of normal but can do their jobs. Bill loves players who play with passion and talks them up all the time. This is such a bad sports talk radio trope that should have died a long time ago.

It has been so gross how Jim Murray constantly talks about how he hates baseball, wants it to die, and is sick of it and yet he's on the baseball reporters? We can't do better than that? It used to annoy me driving home with music on in the 6pm hour in the summer because there should be reasonably entertaining baseball talk to listen to.

All three of them freely admit to not watching games, except the Patriots. The topics of conversation on the show are usually off the field stuff, never what happened in the game the night before (unless something major happened like a no hitter or 40 point game by Tatum). Mazz seems to be the only one who watches the Red Sox on a somewhat regular basis, but Felger brags about being in bed by 9pm.

I don't think Mazz watches anything except for major match ups (Yankees, Astros, big pitching match ups etc) but I really doubt he's watching many games. He openly admits to "catching some of the highlights"

"Hey Mazz what do you think about (pitching decision in the 6th inning)?"
"I didn't see that specific play but I saw the highlights and let me tell you...their pitching STINKS!"

Murray was open about him not watching the game on Friday night. Gasper started out saying how he DVR'd that game and the Celtics game and stayed up late to watch considering he thought they'd open up talking about the Sox. Murray was like "yeah, I had no interest in watching a July Red Sox-Orioles game. I will never watch Red Sox-Orioles. I had dinner reservations with my wife and, you know, wine and stuff. I did catch a couple innings when I got home." Tom Caron is right in that if you're paid to cover sports you might want to watch them. I usually really enjoy Murray and consider myself a fan of his, but how can you not watch the first game from a big 4 Boston sports team in months? Radio hosts have been complaining about lack of content and here's content and you don't care enough to be informed on it? He then went on to say that he watched the Celtics exhibition. Brutal.

Why would these guys break a sweat? They've been #1 in the ratings for the past decade without watching the games, so where is their motivation to strive for more? When WEEI is trotting out Ordway, Merloni, and Fauria as competition, there's no reason to try harder.

In theory to take some pride in doing their job as well as they can, but I guess they don't care about that

I agree. This town deserves better sports radio, but EEI isn't mounting a real challenge. I personally don't understand the appeal of F&M, but the ratings tell me I'm in the minority.

Trolling and sports adjacent drama plays in the age of social media. It's depressing. I really need to find a quality baseball podcast.

Everything old is new again. remember the discussions back in the early aughts around how WEEI wasn’t being challenged from 1510 “raising the bar”, on a weak signal, or how Felger was stuck on 890.
Once 98.5 came into play with their massive signal reach and different approach to sports talk (no “celebrity callers”, T&R on in the morning etc) it was huge news. Alas, the fresh upstart has settled into what we hated about what they replaced.

I haven't found a good one yet! League or Sox doesn't matter, quality matters. I'd love a recomendation. Thanks!
Absolutely! In my rotation:
Effectively Wild - National Focus
Ringer MLB Show - National Focus
SoxProspects.com - Red Sox centric
Locked on Red Sox - Red Sox centric

I took Starting 9 out as I just had had enough of it but in spurts it's okay personally but it's definitely a show you either love or don't.

I'm sure others will have better options too, my podcasting roams the sports spectrum so I don't catch a lot of the hard to find ones!

effectively wild, the old shows are even still enjoyable to listen to, particularly the listener email shows
