I am guilty for sticking with this so far (which is what they want) but this has to be the stupidest 25 min of radio I've heard in a long time. I'm watching on Comcast and can't believe they're not opening laughing while trying to pretend these are honest takes.

All of a sudden the Patriots are responsible for every player blowing their way out of their previous destination.
Seriously. Imagine if Anthony Davis came to the Celtics? I'm sure they'd be 100% against that too. In a league of rapists and child abusers, I'm fine with this. I'm not a big AB guy, but F&M hating this make me want it even more.

Poor Felger, he's disappointed with Belichick, he's outraged that Bill would do this to his good friends Gruden and Mayock.

Mazz things there was tampering with all of this.

They are both enraged the Patriots would bring in this horrible human being.

Two nitwits; 53 minutes in and they've yet to mention the game last night; you know, the one both of them thought they'd lose because they are too "run heavy" now.

I just realized I have the same Ray Bans as Jim Murray. I may have to destroy them.

I get it's a talk show, but the high moral horse that Felger & Mazz are on is crazy.

Boston Radio is a wasteland.

It doesn't have to be this bad, but people keep listening to it.

You don't have to be a contrarian for contrarian's sake to do good radio, but that is what passes for the "marquee" show in Boston.

Unfortunately good radio takes lots of actual work.

"You don't have to be a contrarian for contrarian's sake to do good radio, but that is what passes for the "marquee" show in Boston."

This is the key for me; yeah, I get it, Felgers take is he's not a pom pom waiver, he's not a "fan" of the teams, if you want that sort of thing, call tomorrow between 10:00am and 2:00pm.

Good, great, we get it.

I don't want to listen to a pom pom waiver either.

But to continually, constantly play the contrarian position and make that the hill you die on gets old.

I guess playing it down the middle would work for me, but not this guy.

I guess. Where has better talk radio? I like T&R, Beetle and Zo and Keefe (minus Dale). Greg Hill. F&M and OMF are dumpster fires. Only one of those 3 have decent ratings. I couldn't take it and turned it off and am watching John Wick based on the the thread here now.

Boy, I stopped listening in about 2011. Tuned back in October 2013 and heard them mostly complain that Ortiz was on steroids.

I only listen to Sirius/XM sports radio. Never anything local. Still some hot takes, still some stupidity, way too much Cowboys and Lakers talk but at least the hosts act as if they enjoy and watch sports. And NFL radio in the afternoon is very very good and Cris Carter is really good discussing football and basketball.

I no longer listen to Boston radio. Always been easy for me as I just had to stop searching out the online streams as I haven’t lived in reach of their terrestrial radio signal for over 15 years.

There just is so much hate listening I could do, but it gets old when your team has a huge win and right away the hosts are bemoaning the lack of calls for the other team, complaining about a win, etc.

There is no joy.

Now I listen to podcasts, listen to national SiriusXM shows, etc.

I just stopped playing the game that Boston Media has been playing for a long time.

My only real contact to Boston media other than these threads here is keeping up with Reiss’ stuff and Hurley’s stuff.

So you basically haven't listened to Boston Media since 2004? I hate F&M, Hill and OMF. I get it. T&R, Beetle & Zo and Keefe aren't hate takes at all.

I'd rather listen to paint drying than most national shows. I do like the Safety Blitz with Rodney & Dan S. on NBC weekends though.

Sorry. Didn’t make it clear. No I haven’t lived near their signal since around 2004.

I kept up with listen live internet streams when it became a thing for awhile. But it just got old taking the time to setup a stream and listen to them shit on teams and players.

I don’t need homerism, but something above “they suck” “team is boring (cause they win too easily” “team isn’t good (cause they dont win big enough)”. Those last two often being said in same season about the same team laying really bare how much of it is just play acting contrarianism.

I think I fully cut out Boston radio streams sometime around 2012-2014 period.

I know I was still listening to them all the time till at least 2011 as I recall following the coverage 98.5 had for the Bruins during their run to the Stanley Cup.

Might be rose colored glasses but I remember Felger and Mazz covering them well.

“I'll keep saying it until I'm told the option has been exhausted: call the Cubs, inquire about Theo, then offer him 10 years and a piece of ownership. The Sox need a GM with a long-term philosophy and short-term guts.”

Mazz dings DD for spending “other people’s money” (I’m still not sure what that means other than he’s not Jerry Jones), but has no issue giving away portions of their business to people he likes.

I can’t even be bothered but I’d love for somebody to find what he was saying after 2011 or when the Cubs were tanking. Now he’ll gladly give away John Henry’s equity for Theo.

Mazz isn't even bad in the "let's tune in and have fun listening to the stupid shit he says" sort of way. He's bad in the "I can no longer listen/watch anymore" sort of way.
I like Felger. He gets it. I wish he had a different partner.
Mazz is unlistenable and a clownshow. I wish Ted Johnson could be paired with Felger.

my 2 scents Felger needs his anti-Felger, an articulate smart non-troll alpha male, a 4+ sport guy to produce mega fireworks

Mazz is a passive yes-man, who blurts out "he suuuucks" in almost every situation.

My suggestion, which is counter to conventional wisdom, and which will never happen, is Shank. He's very good on the radio, smart and very sports knowledgable, and knows national and local sports. He's got his biases, but IMO absent the need to produce clicks in a dieing industry, he is an astute rational voice that would push Felger hard.

I think he'd suffer some of the fate as Mazz has, unfortunately. He's good on the radio because he's still plugged in since he's around the teams daily. If he were to take a full time radio gig, that would stop, his sources would slowly dry up, and he'd succumb to hot takes and speculation.
Right now, he can say something like "I was talking to Alex (Cora) and he was gushing over..." That plays well on the radio.

Good point, one guy saying "You're absolutely right Mike!!" is enough, one too many actually.

Felger and Ted Johnson would be the best possible radio show in this market.
Maybe... Ted has been great as a fill in. Would it really translate to a full time gig, 20 hours a week, year round?

Bertrand was initially great as the #3 and played that role well, challenging Felger more often than not in the beginning, then he fell into the same malaise that Mazz did where he just agreed with Felger.

Really? People enjoy Ted Johnson? I've only heard him a couple times but was less than impressed. But I'm still waiting for Wilfork to shove a mic down his throat.

Yesterday, I turned on their show a few minutes before the end, and caught Felger's talking about Yaz's grandson's Fenway debut.

To paraphrase, "and tomorrow we'll talk about Yaz, the most over-rated Red Sox ever...",

Grade A troll diluted with 100% asshole

I turned it off.

If Felger was paired with Shank for baseball and basketball only, I'd buy that. Not football, aside from his dislike of everything Foxborough, he really isn't that knowledgeable in the sport.

Football is actually his second-"best" sport, behind hockey. He's demonstrated a shaky grasp on baseball and the trends in today's game, and he knows nothing/nada/zip/zilch on professional basketball. He only comments on the drama. He's got absolutely nothing to say about the game itself.

Felger is a topical sports generalist whose general theme is drama, specifically the talking points variety, which is to say, one that need not have any basis in reality. In lewder terms, he’s about stroking, not payoff. Stroking for stroking’s—or a show’s—sake. He’s good at that, such as one can be. And for what it is worth. But it gets thin awfully fast. Hockey is the only sport he has any working knowledge of, but not nearly enough to satiate—or hang with—a true hockey person. As for his Yaz trope: If one really tucks into the numbers and evaluates them within the context of their seasons—for instance, with the 1968 campaign—it’s clear that Yaz is one of the most underrated stars in MLB history, and a sort of proto-Trout.

Not surprising his take on Yaz. Both Felger and Mazz simply discount any sport or player before the 80's. They have a terrible disrespect for the great Celtic players and teams of the 60/70's. They also have no ability to fairly evaluate a player who hasn't won a championship. It's annoying as hell but you can't argue the results.

All you need to know about Mazz' troll credentials were evident on this weeks Baseball Show when the fill in the blank question was "would it be cool if________won the world series". Any guesses on his answer? Of course the Yankees. Why on earth in what galaxy outside the Bronx would that be cool? Oh yeah, because it would annoy red sox fans and that is Mazz' whole game these days

Mazz is an old school baseball fan. Even as a Sox fan, he is like most other old school baseball fans with his reverence for the winningest, classiest team in baseball history. Between the rings, the names, and the history, it's an obsession a lot of baseball people have. There were anchors on SportsCenter who used to say "And all is now right in the baseball world again" whenever the Yankees would win a series after not winning the year before. It's like they're the Globetrotters of baseball and anyone else winning it all is like seeing the Generals win to a lot of those who were forced, for professional reasons, to move onto national coverage of the sport and start having to have conversations with people within other organizations. Plus, as much as we hate the Yankees, they are probably still the most recognizable brand in the game and tend to draw ratings. A Yankees-Dodgers (or whomever) World Series would, presumably, be a good ratings draw. Plus, if the Yankees win their 28th title, it's a little more newsworthy than a team like Houston winning it again. There's also a perception that when the Yankees are doing well, the game is doing well because a lot of casual baseball fans like the Yankees and just about every casual fan likes rooting for the team that produced Babe Ruth (the hitting version), Mickey Mantle, Joe DiMaggio, Derek Jeter, etc., because they are viewed as the elite.

I work with a guy who's a Yankees fan simply because they're the most successful team and he admires that kind of consistency. At least he's not a dick about it, though.

But Mazz generally tends to be far less in troll mode on the Baseball Reporters. His ultimate point was that a Yankees win would probably move the needle for more people than, say, the St. Louis Cardinals or Minnesota Twins winning it all.

SportsCenter anchors were saying the Yankees "restored order in the AL East" after clinching the division for the first time in 7 years.

About to leave work early and turn on the app to see if I want to listen to the show or Spotify:

Caller: He's nevah had good recievahs. Brady needs to stop whining and act like the GOAT and staht working with these kids.

Click... Spotify it is

While the caller is somewhat right about bringing along the young recievers (never really a strong suit of Brady's IMO) it's also not what I want to listen to for a 40 minute commute on a Friday and is obviously the narrative of the week for F&M.

McCarthy had an interesting idea on today's Felger & Mazz show for a new MLB playoff structure.

Get rid or divisions during the season, just AL and NL. 6 teams make it to playoffs per league, top two with byes to the ALDS/NLDS round. Seeds 3-6 in each league would then play each other in a one game playoff.

Honestly, I'd love that setup. The one game playoffs are cruel but enthralling, and I'd welcome another one.

I'm not even sure what this means, honestly. The Pats didn't play a lousy game yesterday. They made one awful play on defense, and one awful play on offense. Against the Bills they also made a similarly awful play on offense and still won the game. I get that Mazz is trolling blah blah blah but I don't even really understand the troll. I'm not sure what he means.

I listened to the open and Mazz gave the Pats a "C-" as a game grade. Felger to his credit pushed back little,. and gave them a "B-"

I think they flip a coin to see who gets to play the hottest hot take card.

I turned it off.
