I will preface this by stating that I am a huge homer however Murray and Ted Johnson reminiscing about the Patriots’ 2004 season around 3:45 PM today was the best Felger and Mazz moment for me in the past several years. Probably says something that neither Felger or Mazz were on the air today.

In the most predictable hot take ever, they all believe that Brady selling his house is proof he is pissed at the contract and is not on the team next year.
“But Felgah, he’s moving to Grenn-ich does that means he’s going to replace Eli for a year? Then he’ll go to the Supah Bowl and beat the Pats and stick it to Bill. I’ll hang up and listen.”

yeah and they kept bringing up denver as a choice

1 elway likes his QB'S Cheap
2 vic loves flacco if he stays healthy he is in Denver for at least 2-3 years
3 denver at best is a 10-6 team
2 things that couild work for this
denver can have 84 mil in cap space next season
and denver plays @ NE in 2020

my 02 its TENN back to NE or retirement for 2020

I'm pretty sure GM of the Sox would be a step down for Theo.

Why would he take a demotion?

Mazz should know better.

I need Theo, Hoyer, Jon Lester, and Rizzo, for Mookie.

I totally agree with you, man. I don't get 4G in my neighborhood and my yard is too big for WiFi, I was out there mowing with my radio headset and was absolutely hanging on every word. I was so glad they realized how good it was and did a double break on it. When they went to commercial in the middle I was dying. I was texting my college roommate who works at the station to tell him it was the best radio on 98.5 probably ever.

I generally tune them out after the occasional 10 minute check-in. Not that day.

Love listening to Felger talk about running backs today including some guy named "Say-Con" Barkley.

Yeah Felger is REALLY high on this team, thinks the defense is special, thinks Sony will have a big year.

Johnson thinks it could rival the 2004 defense, which is awesome to think about.

Felger in today with Ted Johnson. He thinks the Pats are on a totally different level at this point than in most years and "will be a long time before they lose a football game."
And if they somehow lose Week 1, the narrative will flip to "They're all done, Brady has officially hit the cliff, and we're taking your calls to vent about how badly this team sucks until 5." "You're absolutely right, Mike, they're garbage and will be lucky to avoid an 0-16 season with that CRAP they are putting on the field."

Ummm Hmmm... Felger also said Damien Harris >> Sony Michel based on 2+ quarters of pre-season football against nobodies.

There are plenty of reasons to be excited about the Patriots, but Felger’s reaction to the pre-season is not one of them. He is not exactly a good evaluator of talent.

Oh I wasn't using it as an argument of how good they'll be this season, it just surprised me that he is as high on them as he is. I only caught it in passing but i haven't heard him that positive about the team in recent memory.

AKA he's building them up so much to the point where anything but a super bowl win is a massive disapointment that he can rip them about

Best case scenario for Felger would be an 18-0 run followed by a loss in the SB to the Giants and Eli Manning again. I can already hear him talking about Patriots kryptonite.

I wish Ted Johnson would replace Mazz permanently. The show is much easier to listen to whenever he's there.

I’m not sure this is entirely true. I think I’ve heard Felger talk about how sickening it was to get on the media bus after the 18-0 SB loss to the Giants abs listen to writers cackle about how the Pats loss. He said people were laughing at Belichick because “he got what he deserved” for being a jerk to the media.

Felger wasn’t on board with all that. He could change his tune in a few months but in 2008, he wasn’t down with it.

I think Johnson’s really good on the radio. Seems like he can definitely discuss other sports fairly intelligently, I’d love to see him land a regular weekday spot on one of the stations. As a side note, it’s also good to see him fairly healthy and seemingly in good shape. I know he’s struggled with serious post concussion issues in the past, hope he’s been able to manage them.

Ted has been a great addition. I’d listen to Ted Johnson, Joe Murray or Gasper over anything on WEEI not named Keefe.

From your mouth to God’s ears. Ted is terrific on the radio and without Mazz makes the program listenable again.

Chris Gasper is so damn bland. That does t make him a bad guy or untalented but he’s a bit boring both in his columns and on the radio. He’s been in Boston for 15 years, and I just don’t know what his POV is.

I think that may be why I like him in terms of POV. Most have a persona they need to play. I see gasper as just giving an honest take based on what is going on. He’s got plenty of opinions on topics but he’s not a one trick pony just sticking to character.

It's been years since I really actively listened to sports radio, but I remember Gasper as the perfect antidote to the hot take army. No way he'd be entertaining enough to carry a show, but he would be a good balance to a Felger type.

Credit to F&M. They opened today's show replaying their mutual splooge (from last week) as touting Andrew Luck as a mortal Luck to lead the Colts to the play-offs for the next 10 years. And Felger's trolling Pat's fans for preferring Brady to Luck, by constructing a false narrative regarding a non-existant Brady for Luck trade.

I get that, I really do. And I'm not saying that I need a hot take (ever) but I don't remember anything Gasper has ever written or said. He's a good writer and he has measured takes, but there needs to be something behind it. Like Bob Ryan wasn't running around with a ton of hot takes, but he's interesting. Same with someone like Steve Buckley or Sean McAdams. I think that those guys have defined POVs and while I may not always agree with what they say, it's still interesting.

The new hot take is that Luck is not tough enough, he's wired differently, other QBs have taken more hits and sacks, and that's not good for the NFL.

Fuck them.
Was there any doubt this is where they were going to go? They have questioned the toughness of pretty much everyone, so why would they be rational here? I'm sure Jim Murray had plenty of snarky things to say.

Did the Gottlieb thing come up at all?

I haven't listened to F&M today (as usual) but Zolak talked about it earlier today and it isn't about being tough enough, it's about mental state. If you've been hurt for years and you're expected to go through training camp, regular season, go through meetings, week by week and know you're not going to play it's a grind. You're 100% in or out. He's also getting shit constantly because the colts are an awful organization and seemingly a terrible medical staff who can't even field basic questions about his health. Having teammates and media shitting on him about if he really wants to play or not has to get old.

I thought that was Kirk "Trust Fund" MInihane?
They're both incredibly tough. Do you think anyone but TGR Jim Murray would admit to wearing sunglasses in the studio because the light hurts his eyes? Fuck no. Dude is a tank.

Does Vegas offer odds on him calling an actual pro athlete a bum at least once per episode?
I'm sure Vegas would take the same odds on TGR Jim calling a pro athlete a bum in person.

i was listening for a bit this afternoon and they replaced some audio from like 6-7 years ago (might've been longer) where Tony was ALL IN on the hot take that if you didn't want to trade Brady now for Luck you are a FOOL

priceless, although i give them a bit of credit for unearthing it and admitting how dumb that take looks now.

The hypocrisy of these morons is astounding.

On the one hand they are killing Luck for not being tough enough to deal with the pain and/or difficulty of making his next comeback and leaving the Colrs in the lurch 1 week from the season's open, and on the other trashing the Colt fans for booing Luck on Saturday night.

Both reflect a an unrealistic sense of entitlement versus a player's right to a normal healthy life for the next 50+ years.

They are playing both sides to generate calls and discussion to eat up four hours on a day where there really aren't any other big sports stories happening, unless you'd rather hear them shit all over the Players Weekend and the uniforms or the Little League World Series during that time. The Sox are coming off a ho-hum series win in San Diego (they could bitch about the bats going to sleep yesterday, but that seems like it wouldn't be great radio and I'm sure Mazz is going to vent his spleen about it on the Baseball Reporters Show), the Bruins haven't done anything, the Celtics haven't done anything but announce that all four members of Team USA (which lost yesterday, so there's some fodder) are making the team, and college football's opening weekend just happened, which I'm sure might have some stories but not for a town that really can't get up for college sports except during March Madness and the Beanpot, and even then just barely. The Revs are a snoozefest and a laughingstock this season, last I checked, so they have to fill the time up somehow and this is the top topic in sports right now.

One of the reasons that I enjoyed Sean McAdams on the radio, besides his sweet sweet baritone voice, was that he gave a level headed view into things (team he was covering that season). Gasper is the same for me (without those dulcet tones). After a day of whining and complaining, plus what I have to endure from the end users, I looked forward to some level headed discussion. And I guess that is where SoSH spoils(spoiled) me.
Radio: JBJ SUCKS!!! He's hitting 223!
Here: Well, his defense makes up for 90% of his hitting, and since May 3 he has been slashing xxx/yyy/xxx+yyy

But obviously, those calls/texts/emails aren't going to make it through, so one gives up. So that means less of Gasper and McAdams, and their level headed takes, and more of Sully from the Cape saying how screwed the Patriots are, because Brady is going to play for the Dolphins next year. Giselle took a modelling job in Miami.

Or they could have used the Luck story to discuss football.

Will the Colts trade for a QB or stick with Brissett?

Can Brissett step-up?

Who might be available?

Eli?

Will they tank for Tag?

If the Colts suck who in the AFC might benefit and make the post-season in their absence?

Granted I listenened only to the open and then again a couple of hours later, so I might have just missed that stuff, but all I caught were the hot takes.

Murray was out today (honeymoon?)

I don’t usually care for Marshall Hook (Murray’s backfill), but I did appreciate the fact that he take-cornered Felger when Felger inferred that Luck was soft.

“I didn’t say that! I control the words that come out of my mouth during these four hours and those are YOUR words, not mine!”

Hook did a good job of (appropriately) accusing Felger of using weasel-words to challenge Luck’s toughness. It’s not often that Felger becomes flustered, but Hook had him on the ropes a couple of times.

F & M embarrassed themselves today on the topic of Luck.

Mazz says it doesn’t “feel” like JD Martinez is 3rd in the league in OPS. According to Mazz, the numbers JD is putting up during his hot streak don’t count because he is playing for a contract.

He also has a newfound respect for the importance of David Andrews.

Bedard was on yesterday, and Mazz launched into a take to the effect of ‘you know I didn’t think Andrews was that good but I thought about it and I’m concerned!’

Mazz is a fucking turd. Just a useless heap of shit.

Felger, love him or hate him, is entertaining and knows exactly what he's doing. And when he doesn't, he'll be the first to tell you.

Mazz? He's a shrieking schoolmarm/scold, except he doesn't even watch or follow the sports he's having a conniption about. I hope he falls into a wood chipper.

Nothing brings joy to Mazz's black little heart more then the local sports teams crushing the hopes and dreams of fans. He'd rather see a local team lose a crushing defeat and be able to mock fans the next day than breakdown an epic win. He is literally the absolute worst.
