So, after talking about Rondo's selfishness for 5 hours today.... wonder what tomorrow will bring.

Mazz's explanation of only voting for the best all-around players (Griffey, Bonds, Clemens) was pre-emptively contradicted by his vote for Edgar Martinez.

So, for those of you scoring at home - Griffey, Bonds, Arod, Clemens, Pedro, Maddux, Manny - the BEST of the BEST...and Edgar Martinez. But not Bagwell, Piazza or Biggio.
I only heard a few minutes today but I did get to hear why Biggio shouldn't be in. "Singles hitter who just had a long career". Biggio has 144 more doubles (668 - 5th all-time) and 36 more home runs than his beloved Jeter.

A guess:

"This is why New Orleans didn't want him for Chris Paul."
"You Green Teamers choose to ignore what the rest of the league sees."
"Mike, you can't win a championship with this guy leading your team."

Probably something like this:

Felger: "Thank God that facacta assist streak is over! Do you think Grande called the league about that one?"

Mazz: "HAHAHA! Oh my gosh, Mike...!"

(Insert 10 Tanguay sound effects)

Felger: "But man, Rondo has to be better than that. He just HAS TO BE. 'Look at me, I'm a big tough guy.' Give me a break. Everybody in that league is a 'fake tough guy.'"

Mazz: "Look, Mike, I didn't see much of the game, but when I heard that had happened..."

Felger: "And part me thinks, 'If Doc hadn't appeased Rondo, this BABY, by putting him back in that blowout to keep this FACACTA assists record, maybe this could have been avoided.' Is anybody standing up to Rondo over there? What happened to ubuntu? I hate the Celtics, but I respect their championship history. This stuff usually happens to the other teams in that league. But now it's happening to the Celtics. Really?! Really?!"

Mazz: "Mike, at this point in time, given the information we have, I'm very concerned about the situation over there..."

Felger: "Somebody said yesterday, 'This is Rondo's team now.' If that's the case, they're in big trouble. That still has to be Garnett's team."

You know, I heard this too and wondered if Jeter is Biggio with rings. I was too lazy to look it up so thanks!

If Biggio had played in Boston, there'd be thousands of Massholes named Craig and Dustin Pedroia would be a bum who didn't live up to the predecessor.

Seeing that Rivers shit all over this team after the game, calling them, among other things, "soft", I think thats what they'll focus on.

You'll have to ask Rivers.
I assume the "soft" comments were in regards to not playing hard enough during the game.

Here's another thing: Felger ripped the Bruins when they did not retaliate when Savard got head-shotted by Matt Cooke. Humphries stepped on Rondo earlier in the game, and then flagrantly fouled Garnett which caused Rondo to go after him. Will be interesting to see how this is spun.

Yesterday they were pissing all over Rondo's streak and used Larry Bird as a guy who didn't care about numbers because he didn't go into a game to get a quadruple double one time.

I loved Larry Bird, I think that he was an awesome basketball player, etc. but this is also a guy who the next game after Kevin McHale scored 60 points went out and scored 61. So, he's not exactly the person to be holding up as the doesn't care about the numbers poster boy.

I don't expect Felger to know this, he was in Wisconsin at the time. But instead of saying, "Yeah Felger, you're totally right!" Mazz could have done his job a bit and called his cohort out. But that would require effort and he only exerts effort from April to September from 6:00 - 7:00 pm.

Taking a look at the rebound totals, especially for the Nets bench, and I can see why Rivers called the team soft. It had nothing to do with the Rondo fight, and the Celtics were well on their way to losing that game prior to then anyway. Of course, it's too much to expect Felger/Mazz to actually explain this.

I listened to a lot of Monday's show, and didn't catch much of today's show, but I'm wondering if they have talked about Belcher at all.

I wonder if 98.5 has told their talent to stay mum on the topic, since I don't really think it's been discussed on any of the shows. (Compared to D&C on EEI, who dedicated the whole show on Monday to it.)

They talked about it in the final segment on Monday(maybe Tuesday, memory is fuzzy. Was right before the Final Word on either day).

It's amazing to me to hear Mike Felger being the voice of reason about the lockout.

It doesn't surprise me at all that Mazz is manufacturing an idiotic dissent.

With Dave Gaucher in studio, Mazz should be hogtied and gagged. Why is he talking?! Did Law & Order do a hockey-lockout themed episode?

Goucher isn't covering himself in glory either. They're harping on the contract limit thing without realizing the basic, obvious thing that five-year deals hose competitive balance.

EDIT: and now they quote league anal puppet Adrian Dater. Wonderful!

So Felger and Mazz spend hour proclaiming Houston had a tougher schedule than the Patriots, and (as has been their entire talking point for 3 years now) that the Pats haven't played anyone. Right on the edge of "Fact, not opinion!" Then they do the math... and the Pats had the harder schedule. I am SO surprised. The big thing that the schedule bashers always neglect to mention is the fact that one of the reasons a team like the Patriots has a schedule that by record appears on the lower end of toughness is that they're not playing their 13-3 selves while 11 other teams are.

What the fuck is Mazz's argument with the Red Sox?

Felger just laid out the plan perfectly: "They want to build through the farm system, and are counting on their top prospects to produce in a couple of years. In the meantime, they have to field a respectable product and spend some of their money, which is what they're doing. They've signed bridge guys, and if all breaks right, they will contend for a wild card spot in this bridge period."

Mazz then retorts by screaming about how "EVERYTHING SEEMS DISJOINTED! LOOK, MIKE, I JUST THINK....YOU KNOW, WHAT IS THE PLAN?"

I'm not a big fan of how the offseason has played out thus far either, but it's astounding to me that somebody who covered baseball for decades can't wrap his head around what the Red Sox are doing. Mazz must be playing, he can't be this stupid.

This would be called willful blindness. Kudos to Felger.

You can argue against the bridge approach and claim that they should have dealt the kids to GFIN.

You can perhaps quibble with the execution -- maybe they should have got this guy or that more cheaply.

What you cannot do is pretend that the current FA pool alone enabled them to GFIN. And had they paid Hamilton what it took to get him, Mazz would be making precisely this point, along with excoriating them for taking an enormous risk with an aging Hamilton who has issues.

Watching these guys on TV for the first time and I have to say its pretty awesome. They genuinely seem like they are having a blast doing the show, especially on Fridays. Ok Ok. Right right ok ok
Mazz falling out of his chair and slapping the brick wall adds a bit to the context, doesn't it?

Wasn't able to listen today unfortunately. What was their take on the Pats loss?
I only heard a bit, but Mazz was hysterical. He thinks that the 49ers let the Pats back in the game (basically NE was lucky) and once SF wanted to play, they did so and that's how they won. The Patriots are in trouble and aren't that good. Felger disagreed with what Mazz said and felt that Pats' biggest problem was that the playoff road is tougher now than it was on Saturday (hard to argue that).

Basically Mazz took the idiot road and Felger the more measured route. At least that's how it sounded at 4:15.

pretty much the same at 5. Mazz didn't say much but Felger added that he likes that they came back and that his feelings about the team hasn't changed. He didn't think that they were perfect or infallible before this game and that when you face another really good team that team is going to have a chance to win on any given Sunday.

I started listening at 2-3 then didn't get back on until the Pereira interview at 5. Felger started as you said and stayed that way. Mazz's point, at least in the beginning, was that the Pats are that good, but have the fatal flaw that has caused them to lose the last 2 Super Bowls, lose to the Ravens in the playoffs and lose to the Jets. I'm sure he didn't explain that later or he completely made shit up cause he was playing on the Internet but that's at least how it started, which I agree with him with.

I do love the Pereira interviews each week.

Felger is floating the suggestion that the Pats should tank the final two games (definitely the Dolphins game) to guarantee a four seed and a better path to the Super Bowl. The plan is to play the 5 seed (likely Indy) in the first round then head to Houston in round two to avoid Denver until the AFCCG.

He noted that they did this in 2005 when they tanked the final game (also Miami - the Flutie drop kick game) and drew Jax rather than Pitt when Cassel badly overthrew a receiver on a 2 pt conversion after a chat with Brady on the sidelines. Unfortunately, that trip to Denver didn't turn out so well.

Right, which is among the reasons you don't do this, be careful what you wish for. And it was a particularly odd choice because the Pats historically have struggled in Denver, BB or no BB, Brady or no Brady. Even when they have won out there, the wins tend to be uncomfortably close and ugly.

I think it was done to get a better first round matchup, which clearly happened given that they dominated Jacksonville and Pittsburgh won the Super Bowl. Because of reseeding you can't predict who you're going to play in the 2nd round unless you're the #3 or #6 seed. For example, this year I think even if they manage to drop to the #4 seed, they're probably still going to Denver because I don't trust Baltimore to make it out of the first round.

Edit: Actually, their tanking made no difference in the 2nd round. If they had been the #3 seed and beat Pittsburgh, they would have ended up in Denver anyways. So score one for BB.
