Everyone bitching about the No Hey how are you, first time long time etc. It seems to have set in and it has made the show go much smoother and a lot less awkward pauses.

That and 'run the friggin' ball!'

"Sabermetrics is a valuable tool, but it's not an absolute. It can be used in decisions on a day to day basis."

When talking about lack of strikeouts by Sox pitchers he says that is part of his idea of "uptempo style of play." Need to attack.

They going to be on at 2? Doomsday Felger may be great today.
They've gone the serious route for the most part, which I think is the right move, albeit a little disappointing.

On another note, both Felger and Mazz just admitted to "barely watching the World Series." I know Boston sports fan largely don't care about national stories, but it would be nice if they weren't always so parochial. It would do a lot to diversify the show, instead of revisiting the same topics for the entire week.

Barely anyone outside of Detroit and San Francisco watched the World Series. Mazz can't even be bothered to watch most Sox games.

So today we hear that the Celtics this season are going to be terrible on defense, and Mazz explain how having a good bench will be of no benefit in the playoffs. They also told us that Jeff Green was signed to his extension in order to allow Danny to save face from the Perkins trade, and that his preseason is completely irrelevant; he's still a terrible player.

Earlier today I heard Gresh compare Rondo to Cam Newton (??!!). Seriously, protesters?

did they explain why they'll be terrible on defense when all signs point to them being better on defense than last year?

I'm impressed that you listened today. I tuned in, heard Wiggy talking, and immediately turned it off.

I doubt Felger and Mazz have any rationale for their premises. They don't actually watch any basketball, so they pretty much just make stuff up when it comes to the sport. Actually, Mazz doesn't seem to watch any sports any more so he's always making stuff up.

Granted it's the ultimate in SSS but 120 points allowed and Jeff Green turned back into a pumpkin. They can keep running with the narrative at least until next week now.

Felger: "So, what happened to the Celtics last night, Tanguay? It felt like a funeral last night at Comcast with the green teamers. What's wrong, Garbear?"

*Tanguay sound effect*

Felger: "Oh, so here's KG.."

*Insert KG ROOAAAR sound effect*

Felger: "ROOAAARRR! Don't get in my way, I'm a big tough guy. I'm not going to shake Ray's hand. I'm too intense. What's wrong? Did he miss his ROOAAARR on the jumbotron? He didn't have Gino? Was that it, Garbear?"

Mazz: "Oh my gosh, Mike, it was..."

Felger: "Garnett is a FRAUD. What a FRAUD. Mr. Tough guy, throwing fake elbows at Mario Chalmers, snubbing Ray Allen, and oh...only scoring 9 points! 9 points! Chris Bosh beat him all night. What...a...FRAUD, Mazz."

Mazz: "I mean, Mike, I didn't catch most of the game, but from what I saw..."

Felger: "It's unbelievable. All of the green teamers tell me about KG's intensity. KG won't take crap from anybody! And what happens? He has more fouls than points in the 3rd quarter! What a fake tough guy, like everybody else in that league."

It's going to be a long winter on this show without any hockey. Not that Felger doesn't have some points in regards to Garnett's performance last night, but the basketball talk will have to delve a little deeper this season than "KG is a phony/green teamers are homers/referees are crooked."

Spot on.

I hate to say it.

But give me EEI when talking about the Celtics.

It is the same script with Felger and the Celtics every time

No thanks

You know I love your fanfic. It's the highlight of this thread. (admittedly, a low bar but...)

But I didn't get to listen in today (yet)...so did he say that shit today or not? "Spot on" implies to me "yes", but then again, I also spend time in the Gazza forum, so my English is peppered with British and "spot on" is a common "nailed it" in Brit.

Talking about Halloween candy (Felger is anti-kid & anti-candy...big surprise):

BEETLE: "So just hide it! Don't let them have it! It worked in my house..."

(Uh, Mark? Hi - I'm a big fat guy too. And it didn't work in your house.)

Funny thing was Felger was going off on his rant and Mazz talking about bringing back the hard foul and how the NBA is a bunch of babies.

Commercial, I turned to WEEI and Ordway is talking about what a physical game it is and how they're pounding each other constantly and its such a tough game. Talk about two opposite ends of the spectrum.

To give Felger credit,he did actually watch the game. Mazz didn't "because I have no power". If he did, he'd watch CSI or Dancing with the Stars anyways.

For the last month or two I've been losing my patience with Felger and Mazz. For the most part I like them and I listen to them, but when they go on their rants I've been going over to EEI (which, I have been doing a lot more recently -- even in the morning). Felger is such a troll sometimes, one day he's bitching that athletes are too buddy-buddy with each other and today he's bitching about KG and Ray Allen. At some point it just becomes a parody, nothing is ever good enough.

And I guess that's really the crux of the problem vis a vis sports radio, nothing is good enough. There's always something to bitch about and it just wears you down after awhile. Everything sucks, all games are flawed, athletes are assholes, coaches are pricks, general managers are stupid, owners are greedy, commissioners are shills and fans are morons. And I understand the sports radio game, being upbeat and positive doesn't work, but there has to be a happy medium.

The less said about Mazz the better. I was a big proponent of the guy, I like his writing, I like him on the Baseball Show and I thought he did a decent job with Felger. But he is awful now, he just parrots Felger gives no push back and is just a smug know-it-all (which is ironic because most of the time, he's incorrect or he has to "research" something). Massarotti really needs to go because what's the point of having him around, Felger is basically talking to himself for four hours.

I'm with you JMOH except I've been going straight to music or podcasts because EEI is just as insufferable. The only thing I liked about today's show was Mazz basically calling Felger a bad parent because he couldn't handle his daughter and her Halloween candy.

Maybe its because I've grown tired of the whole pro sports scene, or maybe I'm just softening, but I can only handle F&M in small doses. I honestly don't mind the negativity.........in fact I enjoy it for the most part...........but its just the SAME negative rant over and over and over. Sometimes for days. I get it. Most times I fucking agree with it. But once you've said it nine thousand times I've had enough.

I've said this many many times but this show would be much improved if they weren't so damn provincial. Talk about television ratings. Talk about other teams negativity. Talk about your personal lives. They do this sometimes, but not nearly enough...........its always back to the same old angle eventually.

But thats their problem and not mine. As a satellite radio subscriber I have about a billion other choices.

Their best segments continue to feature a guest - Perillo, Gasper - in studio. It obviously doesn't work with Wiggy, but I'm perplexed as to why Flynn isn't on with them for a set hour or two each week.

But the need for another voice to balance Felger would be moot if Mazz wasn't mailing it in like Derek Bell.

It would be nice if Mazz did some preliminary research before unveiling his big "five-point plan" for the Red Sox this offseason.

Such strenuous research topics would include:
*Finding what the free agent rules are this season under the new CBA.
*Finding out if Nick Swisher is 29, 30, or 31 years old. Also, after a few minutes of clicking around, Mazz would find out Swisher isn't looking to settle for a "3 year deal worth $33 million." But, I'll settle for just looking at his player page and finding out how old he is.
*Find out how much these pitchers who "throw innings" may demand on the open market. A brief visit to mlbtraderumors.com would solve this.

I've probably been one of Felger's biggest defenders and one of Mazz' biggest detractors on the site but I get the feeling that Mazz is just so tired of Felger's bullshit and has stopped trying. When he does offer an opinion he is frequently mocked by both Felger and Bertrand along with the listeners so at this point it is probably easier for him to play the John Dennis role and go along with whatever Felger's agenda is and poke fun at him every so often (like yesterday basically calling Felger a bad parent).

I can't say I blame him either. He's got a nice cushy gig, works 4 hours a day, doesn't do any other real sidework like most of the others, and collects a decent paycheck every week. It sucks for us as listeners but as long as the ratings don't nosedive he will have a long career playing Felger's sidekick and hosting the baseball show.

Not that you're wrong...but that just makes me hate him more. It is undeniable that Felger & Bertrand (or Felger and ANYONE) is better radio than Felger & Mazz, and that's because Mazz does not give a shit and makes very little effort. He's the Beckett of TSH.

I hate to speak in cliches, but here's two of them: Feger is what he is, for better or worse.

I expect that today, it will be for better. He needs to just go loose on the NHL.

From Mazz's latest column on Boston.com: http://www.boston.com/sports/columnists/massarotti/2012/11/a_few_things_things_to_believe.html

I believe Barrack Obama will win the Presidential election on Tuesday.

Bashing the Ortiz deal because it's for 2 years. They are beating the drum that Ortiz will have no motivation to put up big numbers anymore because he's not on a 1-year contract. These guys are so full of shit.
What would be great is if sports talk radio hosts were on 1-year contracts. I mean, they clearly aren't motivated to keep talk interesting and non-repetitive. Must be because they've got cushy multi-year deals.

What's funny is that I was listening to them on Friday, when they were saying it will take a 2yr deal to get it done, and they absolutely should do what it takes to make it happen. The "motivation" question never came up. They were also completely ignorant as to the rules regarding draft pick compensation; one of them was insisting that it was still likely the Sox would receive no compensation if Ortiz should leave.

Drivel, and then some....

Love that Felger is going off on stats on the Presidential polls on Nate Silver, InTrade etc. If they only did this much research for the show on a daily basis.

I was only half listening to Gresh and Zo (I think they were talking about it on their show... maybe it was F & M)today but apparently at Friday's Celtics game, Wiggy got into a bit of an argument with Larry David.
Did anyone hear the whole story?

They talked about on Bertram and Gasper on Saturday. Basically David was sitting in front of Wiggy and they end up talking about Ray Allen. David said Allen was a good guy and Wiggy said he was punk and a traitor, etc.

I guess they kept going back and forth for most of the game. Then David called him a beloved cunt.

I've tuned in a couple times this week and both times its been nothing but Andrew Luck ball washing ("The Patriots are in deep trouble the next ten years!!!"). I guess it sucks when there is no hockey and you don't know anything about the NBA. This show has really declined over the past 12-18 months. They desperately need the hockey lockout to end.

Wiggy's explanation of the encounter was difficult to get through. He used the term "this, that and the other" at least a dozen times. Why is this guy on the radio?

Was I the only one put off by yesterdays debate on both F&M and Gresh and Zo about the whole 'should NFL players show up on game day if their child is being born'? They were getting into the minutia details of 'if she goes into labor at 1pm on gameday ok', and crap like 'well there could be complications', 'what if the wife is scared about labor'...

I understand its a storyline because of Brady, but he was one of the Pats that was ontime for a Wednesday practice during the snowstorm when he had the Benjamin the day before. That should end the story because clearly Brady is going to be there if at all possible. I couldnt care less what specific birth details/situations Felger believes justify missing the game and which dont. Just horrible radio

I agree Wutang, every time I have flipped over to D&C this past week it has been the topic of conversation and I immediately switch back. Even T&R were getting in on the act this morning and discussing it, I get that it's a slow period in sports right now I don't need to hear every show debating whether or not Brady shows up for a game when his child is born.

Ron from Vegas called in and said the Pats should think about taking Braxton Miller in the future as a replacement for Brady. One of the reasons was he's a leader of a team that is 10-0. Felger, Mazz, and Beetle said they never heard of Miller and didn't know Ohio State was undefeated. Mazz brilliantly chimes in, "Yup. It's true, Ohio State is undefeated! I just looked it up. Yup, it's true", like he should get a gold star for confirming the caller's "outlandish unknown piece of trivia".

Okay, maybe I'm piling on...but Jesus, three guys who get paid to follow sports never heard of Braxton Miller and didn't know Ohio State was undefeated? None of them? I realize Boston isn't a great area for following college sports but that is pretty piss poor, isn't it? At least one of them should have heard of the guy, right? I can't believe I'm saying this but I think I'm going back to EEI. At least until hockey season comes back.

Meh. Maybe it's because I don't give a shit about college football, but I give them a pass on this. Should they know that Miller is the QB for OSU? I guess, probably. But aside from a few alums who cares about a team that can't go to a bowl and is therefore out of contention for the National Championship?

Again, I can see why you might be bugged by it, and maybe this is the straw that broke your back, but I personally don't think it's a big deal.

Well, with the sanctions on the school and the Buckeyes not being eligible for a bowl, they're not getting a ton of attention on the national level anyway. When they talk about the undefeated teams and how the BCS might play out, all the talk is about Alabama, Oregon, K-State, and Notre Dame. Ohio State and Louisville, both undefeated, never get a mention.
