I had assumed -- wrongly, it appears -- that we're getting online nothing more than comes over the radio, with at least the same delay and maybe more.
I don't know the exact hows and whys of it, but I know that BECAUSE the internet stream is on more of a delay than the OTA broadcast, that is WHY they can't use the 'further delay' trick to bleep out expletives. It would knock the stream too out of sync. Or something. :buddy: They sorta explained it on T+R one time when they joked about one slipping through. Probably because the audio stream gets uploaded in real-time, but by the time it actually makes its way through net traffic to streaming servers its already a bit behind and they don't want it to be too far behind the actual air broadcast.

At a high level, the audio for airwave and online streams are encoded differently. So, at the highest upstream possible point (right below the content input), the streams are broken out. This reduces the amount of overall processing needed. The delay and emergency mute are plugged into the airwave stream at a point very far downstream, so by the time the stream gets there, the online audio stream has long since been broken out and gone elsewhere.

That's a standard setup. It's certainly possible to move the mute upstream or the audio split downstream, it's just a little more complex.

Today's show was hilarious...loved the accordion player who came into studio (Felger and Mazz's "celebrity callers" are a lot less...uhhh...detestable than Ordway's are).

Also, those Vancouver guys really understand "Felgar," huh? Someone who's only worried about making friends with athletes and sucking up. That's him alright.

The Mumbles Menino quotes in the open today were some of the funniest shit I've ever heard. He is the gift that keeps on giving. I was listening on my iPhone as I was walking my dog. I was laughing so hard my dog stopped dead in her tracks and just stared at me as if something was wrong with me.

Pats win their first round playoff game?
The defense did terrific?
Tebow was humiliated and eliminated?

Oh no, Felger & Mazz's talking points are up in smoke! :( Although I'm sure Mazz will still find someway to change the 45-10 win into the Pats SUCKING big time.

Hernandez played late and took a big hit? SUCK! SUCK! SUCK! BELICHICK SUCKS!

Also, the Patriots still haven't beaten a good team, and the Patriots didn't show how good they were, instead they showed how bad Denver is.

There are your talking points for the week.

I was listening on Friday and Mazz was going on and on and on about how the Pats haven't beaten anyone good in the playoffs since the 04 Super Bowl and how Brady hasn't been very good, etc. And Chris Gasper said that in 06, Brady went 26-28 and the Pats beat a good Jaguars team.

Massarotti said, "Well, they're the Jaguars. They suck. That shouldn't count." And Gasper said that the Jags were actually pretty decent that year, but Mazz wouldn't hear of it. He kept saying that the entire organization is a piece of crap and that the win against them shouldn't count. Even Felger thought that was a bit of BS on Mazz' part.

In order to change any sort of Massarotti narative, the team that New England has to beat has to have the Massarotti seal of approval. The 2006 Jaguars? Suck, worse than the 2007 Detroit Lions. The 2010 NY Jets? The second coming of the 1985 Chicago Bears.

I really enjoyed this show for a while. When I liked it, Felger was Felger(never enjoyed his character much, but he's semi entertaining) and Mazz was a semi-reasonable sports columnist. Due to the ratings it has deteriorated into Felger being TOO Felger and Mazz becoming a cartoon character. When EEI finally blows it up and fires Wolf, they will regain the crown for the afternoon at least. I think Holley was a good move, but he needs a guy like Felger to make him great. They really should do a national talent search to replace Ordway. There's no way that he's worth what he's being paid.

maybe the best drive time pairing should be Felger and Ordway...

...Felger spending the entire show belittling Ordway and his pandering...now that would be entertaining

Well, they beat a 14-2 San Diego team in San Diego as well that had a bye week to prepare for them. Although I'm sure Mazz's narrative on that would be that the Chargers SUCKED due to that idiot player who tried to run back the interception and fumbled it, and hence the victory doesn't count. Not to mention Felger's beloved Jets as well. Oops, sorry, when the Pats beat the Jets it doesn't count, only when the Jets beat the Pats does it. Now that the Packers and Saints are out, even if the Pats win 45-10 in both of the next 2 games, Mazz will call it meaningless and declare that the Pats SUCK, this season SUCKS, the league SUCKS and all of us SUCK for being fans of the team.

Felger also made some comment (although I wasn't paying too much attention so I may have not heard it in full context) about the Pat's success is all due to Brady, and that the team sucks, Belichick sucks, the drafting sucks, the owner sucks, and they'd be a last place team if it was not for Brady, completely ignoring the fact that the team went 11-5 with a QB who hadn't started since high school. Must have been drinking Mazz's coffee that day, cause that's bad even for Felger.

And Ordway belittling Felger's hating. Seriously, Felgey only likes the Bruins, and that's because there was a concerted(and correct) aim at taking down EEI by focussing on the Bruins.

After yesterday's results, Mazz's script for the week is written. For months he's been hounding on the "new NFL" where defense doesn't matter and it's just a glorified track meet, etc. With the Saints and Packers losing, Mazz will now declare that Defense does matter and thus Baltimore will beat up on the Pats like the 9ers did to NO and NYG did to GB. It's really a no lose for him because if the Pats win, they only beat Flacco who sucks

I have gone back to WEEI for the majority of my listening time.

Too bad-Felger is great but Mazz is awful. It is a script-and it's tired.

I love the intro they just played of Felger bashing on Gronk and Hernandez when they were drafted and that this duo would never work. Great stuff.

On Friday, after ripping the Patriots all season, he picked the Pats. But said something along the lines of, "But only because they're playing the Broncos, who suck". Then when Beatle (or Felger) asked him how they would do against the Ravens he said the Patriots would lose.

Now this week's schtick is they still stink but he may pick them because the Ravens looked so bad on Sunday. I guarantee he picks the Patriots to win again this week. That way if they win, it's "I called it" and if they lose, it's "Are you surprised, they haven't beaten anybody all year." Mazz really is loathsome...unoriginal and unfunny.

Yeah, Felger's singing a similar song today too...he read an email from last year and talked about how the Patriots haven't really changed, bringing up points about how the referee crew assigned to the game swallows the whistles, etc. However, he's still picking the Patriots.

I think it's more the fact that these guys need to fill 20 hours of airtime and in order to do that they have to create some sort of "doubt" surrounding the game. It's really the only way to do it (I don't listen to Holley and Ordway so I don't really know what they're doing...I wonder if they're waving the pom-poms all week).

I would usually agree with you on Mazz, but I have to admit the bit he did today on Ray Lewis reading the grocery list cracked me and my son up.

Credit where it's due -- I can't imagine Ordway allowing himself to be skewered this way. But, this should have been paired with Felger imploring BB to draft Tebow because TB needed to be "goosed".

When you slice through it, Felger is more objectionable than Mazz in this area. Yeah, Mazz is a fool -- but unlike Felger he never spent 10 years of his life as a NFL beat writer.

Did them not trusting Gostkowski come from as out of nowhere as it seemed to me, or have I just missed that somehow?
They're running out of things to talk about.

Edit: I posted that from my phone and would like to elaborate. I've listened to the show everyday for at least an hour or so this week, and they've done a really good job at talking about just about everything there is to talk about. I think that it's Friday and they didn't have much to talk about, so Felger kind of brought up Ghost, because they had been talking about Vinatieri all day yesterday. Felgey pretty much gave his usual "If you haven't done it, I don't trust you to" slant. It's one of his more annoying traits, but I think that's how they arrived to that point.

I eagerly await an original idea from Mazz, he is a complete waste of space on the show.
Bertrand is better than him in every possible way.

I still listen to the show just to hear what Felger says as he does come up with interesting takes on occasion.
This week is an exception they are both firmly planted on the fence so no matter what happens tomorrow they will be able to say they called it.

MF: "I've been saying for weeks, Tony, that the Pats have a legit shot at another SB. It would put BB and TB in the pantheon..."

(Claiming credit for a no-lose observation ... if he's right, he's astute ... if he's wrong and they flamed out, it provided another opportunity to crush the Pats).

continuing ...

... "BUT (there is always a "but") ... TB has to play much better if they're going to get this done, Tony, much better ... Brady hasn't been that good recently, when it counts ... Look at that Jets game last year ... he threw that early pick that was pivotal ... 1st seed, and they're out in the first round ... and he didn't distinguish himself against the Ravens the year before either ..."

TM: "Yep, Mike, you're right ..."

MF: "And people talk about that Denver game ... Well Denver sucks ... They gave up 40+ points 4 times this season ..."

(needs to be careful, cause that defense was on the field all game for obvious reasons -- but that doesn't deter Tony)

TM: "Well Tebow didn't help either ..."

MF: "But still Tony, who would you want right now in the clutch, Brady or Eli ... I'd take Eli, cause he's proved it, recently ... He's unflappable ... He wouldn't have thrown awful 4th qtr Interception after Flacco turned it over ... He's won more road playoff games than any QB in the history of the NFL, and he's had an excellent season ... "

TM "Yep ..."

MF: "Eli's grown, while Brady has stagnated or worse ... You're not going to hear that in this town though ... They're stuck in the past and will close ranks ... but that's the reality..."

TM: "You're right Mike ... It's a what-have-you-done-for-me- lately-League ... and recently, Eli's been the better big-game QB ..."

I couldn't have been more mistaken. Tony is thrilled that they found a different way to win. Felger is playing the contrarian, arguing that yesterday makes more likely a boffo Brady performance.

It's gotten to the point where I can't listen to Mazz at all. He always sounds like he's yelling (Gresh suffers from this too), and lately the whole "[insert topic here] SUCKS" talking point has been so beaten into the ground that I'm just not interested in hearing it. And it's too bad because even while I'd like to strangle Felger at times, he's almost always worth listening to. Mazz? Not so much.

I flip it on at the top of this hour and hear Felger make a point about teams simply shooting themselves in the foot and New England simply needing to hold on to win, and Mazz chimes in with "EVERYBODY SUCKS, NO ONE IS GOOD."

I know Felger dislikes talking about politics and "news issues," but he's shining in this segment on Tim Thomas.

Further proof that a Felger/Callahan pairing would be the best thing in radio. Felger would take him on head-to-head on his neo-conservative political views, and though I don't necessarily enjoy listening to constant political debate on sports talk radio, it could produce some very entertaining programming.
