Ordway and Felger are really cut from the same cloth. The difference is, Felger's act is more current whereas Ordway's schtick presumably jumped the shark to the point where he's now trying to "reinvent" himself in an uncomfortable hosting hole doing reads over hip-hop music and engaging in awkward "pop culture" arguments with Michael Holley.

Ordway's background is in acting, and he always described the old "Big Show" as a daily soap opera featuring a different mix of characters...basically the Boston sport fan's version of "Seinfeld." There were inside jokes between the hosts, "bits" replaying the most memorable segments from previous shows, and everybody played a role with Ordway acting as the ring-leader. The listener felt they were sitting in at a lunch table, listening to the unabashed homer jock (Smerlas) threaten to "beat the snot out of it" the preppy, snobby, whiney contrarian (Felger), or the dorky well-read historian (Buckley) try to make sense of the "typical middle-aged sports fan who also happens to be on TV" (Stearns).

Felger and Mazz were both regulars on Glenn's show for many years. They then jumped to different stations (Mazz-1510, Felger-890), tried to simmer down their acts a little bit, and wound up crawling back to EEI to return to their old gimmicks. Now granted, obviously the lack of a signal possessed by 1510 and 890 likely contributed more to those station's downfalls than anything. But when the opportunity came to take part in another sports radio station, I'm sure that Felger and Mazz made a pact to not repeat their mistakes. Since last time they tried to drop a lot of their histrionic schtick, they decided to try something different this time around (amplify it).

The "Evil Tony" character has risen to new heights. Mazz was always pessimistic, but now he's acquired a penchant for doing mocking interpretations of the Boston accent, criticizing statistical analysis, blogs, computers, text messaging, video games (basically anything that people under the age of 35 do), and he's a "Yankees' fan" to boot! Plus, he just can't stop thinking about how the Red Sox lost out on Mark Teixeira...

Felger's simple contrarianism has had several layers added to it. He's an obsessive-compulsive, miserable, and negative prick who's married to a hot wife, makes a lot of money, and gets paid to talk about sports for a living (even though he repeatedly claims that he hates people and hates talking to people). He'll never be happy, and will always have something to rant and rave about. Maybe one day it's that Shaq is taking too long to return from injury, or one day it's the Bruins dropping a 3-0 series lead to the Flyers, or on a slow news day, maybe it's panicking about the probability of an asteroid striking the Earth.

Felger and Mazz's characters may get old eventually, but they're not their yet. "The Big Show" had a decade-plus long run of ratings' dominance. Felger and Mazz know the formula works here, and so far they've been proven right.

*That's not to say that I believe it's 100% schtick. I actually think that Felger genuinely expresses his opinions, it's just that he exaggerates them on the air. Like Ordway used to say, "nobody's ever just fat...they're ENORMOUS."

Great post Phenom. Pretty much sums it all up. Especially the stuff with Ordway. I've tried a couple times to give him a chance, and uncomfortable is the best way to describe it.

I do actually like Felger a lot. As you said its absolutely not 100% schtick, and I find his take on things, for the most part, entertaining. To me he believes what he says about as much as Mad Dog Russo does, and thats fine with me. Both bring it each day energy wise and they are never boring. If I don't like the content of a particular show, or like the person or thing he's ranting against (for instance the NBA) I don't get pissed off, I change the channel.

Anybody hear Felger on tv last night? He was going off about Shaq being hurt again but still going around town to various openings and events. He wanted to know why Shaq was somewhere sitting in a "hyperbolic chamber". Sounds like the perfect name for any show that he's associated with.

Michael Felger and Tony Massarotti have built a strong following and strong ratings in their 18 months as 98.5 The Sports Hub's afternoon drive tandem.

Today, they have one more acknowledgment of their success, agreeing to a multi-year contract extension to remain with The Sports Hub.

“In the last 18 months, Mike and Tony have built a very compelling show that speaks to an enormously devoted and passionate listener-following,” said Mark Hannon, CBS Radio's senior vice president and market manager. “We are thrilled they will be part of 98.5 The Sports Hub for years to come.”

Said Felger: "This job is a blast. I don't know what I'd do without it. I think this station has been good for Boston. We needed another voice, another perspective. I consider myself lucky to be included among the group that helps provide it."

"We're totally fucking dumb and we will cling to meaningless and disproven points as hard as we can" isn't "another perspective."

So any hopes that we had of them replacing Mazz are gone huh? This would have been the time to be proactive and get an upgrade for the sidekick. I hope his talking points improve during the Sox season.

The hyperbolic chamber thing is an in-joke between he and Mazz, and Mazz even acknowledged that their studio is a hyperbolic chamber.

Ok so you just said that Ordway and Holley are too bland, but that Felger and Mazz are too big of ratings hounds..... so what kind of sports talk show would YOU prefer?

I guess I just don't understand what some of you are really looking for here? How can you dislike everything about all four of them even though all four of them are completely different on-air personalities? That's a broad spectrum of distaste
Two intelligent people talking sports without acting or playing to an audience.

For me, Michael Holley is one.

Unfortunately, the two people I think would pair with him very well work at ESPN, so it can't happen.

But I'd pay to listen to Holley/Michael Smith or Holley/Ryen Russillo

It's not real-time, but the frustrated sports radio fan looking for alternative, sensible talk needs to look into podcasts. Posnanski just started one, for instance.

The need for ratings will always pressure live radio into being somewhat bombastic.

Amen. Sucks that their isn't a quality, Red Sox-centric one out there, though.

Also, considering that they preached they were stepping away from the whole WEEI atmosphere, I find it amusing that I jumped into my car to hit the convenience store, and heard what is apparently their slogan for the first time. "Your afternoon isn't complete until you're pissed at one of them.". A marker for what they're aiming for.

Listening to any local sports radio right now is sadomasochism. I can't really empathize with anyone who chooses to do it.

Just dust off the iPod and revisit some music you haven't listened to in a while.

I took a quick look at Felger's mail bag while looking for another blog of his and saw this response to a question (rant) about how the Red Sox suck.

"Red Sox backlash, anyone? I guess this is what happens when you sell membership cards to become a fan, endlessly promote Sox-themed dating and quiz shows during your broadcasts, over-sell Truck Day, cater to people who more interested in Sweet Caroline than the sport, make sure that 95 percent of the media that covers you is in the bag, subject your fans who do care to Jim Rice after games, and, last but not least, go into business with one of the most hated athletes in New England (LeBron). Did I miss anything?"

At this point I'm convinced that he and Mazz just hate the Red Sox organization. They're very critical of the Patriots too but the undercurrent always feels like they want to see them succeed. I won't be able to listen to a second of this show until/if the Red Sox are in first place.

I'm stuck at work. What was this in regards to?
Red Sox. Mainly Varitek catching.

One guy wondered about Salty calling a game (which is the only I don't worry about him for) and Felger took that to mean that everyone wanted Varitek to catch. Which of course led into him referring to Varitek as a "leader" sarcastically and often, without even being prompted. And of course about him being Beckett's binky.

Even Mazz told him to stop it already.

Tony made an astute point today in his article on Manny- they haven't won a postseason game since he left.

Except he must not have been watching in 2008, what with the whole "being a game away from the World Series" thing.

Granted, making thematic inferences about athletes he hasn't watched and teams he hasn't followed is kind of his thing. I wonder if he does this with everything in his life: I bet it's a bitch to be in a book club with him.

Sounds like he wants to stretch his "missing out on Teixeira was the death-blow to the franchise" theory to include Manny's departure as well. He really needs a new schtick.

I didn't hear any of the Teixeira stuff, but I heard the Beckett/Linus stuff the whole ride home and loved every minute of it.
I heard this too and thought it was the very definition of lowest common denominator radio. Just heinous in this douchbaggery and asshatedness. The topic is a fine topic to discuss on sports talk radio, but the over-the-top approach just made it insufferable. What a waste.

When these two are saying objectively dumb things like harping on Teixeira, I understand disliking their point of view. But I can't agree on some of this stuff lately, the contrarian viewpoint is so exceptional to have in these instances. A day after Beckett turns back the clock and throws a gem, everyone is trying to attribute it to Varitek, it's good to have someone question whether that's an indictment on the pitcher, not the catcher.

Yes, the topic was worthwhile and even their position was not unreasonable and a worthwhile view point to consider. It was the delivery that turned a potentially interesting discussion/show into pig slop for morons.

I have no issue with their viewpoint; Merloni talked about it not being just about Varitek either, but he did without being a complete jackass.

I thought the clip of Linus crying, "I need my blanket!" was funny...the first two times I heard it. I listened for about an hour and they literally played it at least ten times. Dead horse.

As far as I'm concerned, Fred Norris is the worst thing that ever happened to radio.

Every dipshit producer thinks he can do what Norris does and drop in 1-2 second bits. They can't. They're neither as fast as Fred nor as clever. And it's not just TSH, it's EEI too.

Listen, I'm one the guys around here who likes Felger, but .....

I was driving up the Pike on the way to work at two o'clock and listened to the show until I arrived at work around 2:30. The Linus stuff was funny the first time I heard it. Then, he just belabored the Linus thing. I went into the office and did my shit and came back out around 5:00. And still, the Linus shit. I turned the station to music. I wish he wouldn't do that shit because I like him, generally.

I guess the FO gave Mazz the go-ahead to start the smear campaign against Dice-K. He's a stubborn diva who thinks he deserves the same rock star treatment he got in Japan, and the team had to force him to make a start in '07 because he was angry about his wife being photographed in the stands.

You're probably right that Norris didn't start this, but (at least to me) he's the one that perfected it. I had never heard anyone do drops like this before. Perhaps I wasn't listening, but it seemed pretty new when I first really listened to Stern (in 1996).

And JM, they're terrible. They play the same cuts over and over again and often times they dump them in while the host is making a point. I actually think that TSH guys are worse at this, they seem like three seconds behind the flow, but EEI's guys aren't much better.

That's the big difference with me, I only listen to these guys for maybe 20-25 minutes per day (depending on commercials) so unless they keep playing the same bit endlessly for a few days it doesn't usually get old to me on the first day.

Plus I tend to agree with Felger's feelings on Beckett, fake Texas tough guy that needs his binky to pitch well.

I also agree with him that at this point in the season, if Becket wants Tek and can pitch like he did the other night, give him Tek.

When it come to TSH and drops, Rich is good at it in the morning. Whoever works with DA at night is pretty good (I always stupidly like the Chuck Perks "pause"). I don't listen to much of either G&Z (who I don't think do much of it) or F&M (who, from what I have heard, do it poorly).

I feel like every day there's 1-2 times where they'll be asking the producer "Do we have that?" "Can you play that clip?" which makes them not funny. F&M seem to kill certain things like the Marchand / Marshman clip which they played 18 times a show for a month. I thought the Linus thing was kinda funny but i only listened for maybe 20 min.

I think Rich does a great job of it, as he does with almost everything they produce, well besides What's Tappinin'

Based on the formula to calculate the luxury tax, the Red Sox are toting a payroll of roughly $180 million this season. Maybe it says something that the man currently carrying them is earning a paltry $450K.So there you go. Proof that money isn't everything. Proof that hunger still counts for something and that every team needs grinders, too.

Really? The proof I see in this is that Lowrie hasn't accrued enough service time to get paid more. What, does getting paid less suddenly mean you're a dirt dog grinder? This entire post is just gibberish.

Sorry, I fixed the link. It's Mazz essentially saying that the Red Sox were terrible because they were paid too much and they can do well now that they have someone who isn't paid much. Lowrie is hot right now because he's got to prove himself while the rest of the team is fat and content!

I'm sure Youkilis is perfectly happy batting .200 so long as he is getting paid well.

Someone should ask Mazz if he's ready to step aside and let someone lesser-paid and hungrier take his job on the show.
