Jimmy Stewart with some background about 98.5's start and WEEI's downfall. No mention of the campaign by Bob Murchison and Shirley Leung of the Boston Globe to destroy WEEI, specifically the Kirk & Callahan show, but he did a pretty good job: https://x.com/bostonmedia617/status/1866711258302763112
That clip is from their weekly "Off Air Show" that airs on Wednesdays after F&M.
It's usually pretty solid, Felger and cohosts don't pull punches and talk some decent shit honestly.

better late than never i guess but they certainly werent talking about it the day it happened
Yes they absolutely did. I commute into work now on Tuesdays and Wednesdays and I was listening to the 5:00 hour on Wednesday where they spoke at length about Crochet and what he means to the Sox. Tony thought that it was a little bit of an overpay but he liked the deal. He also think that the Sox were also able to grab a really good pitcher for cheap money--which lead to a couple minute discussion about whether the Sox FO/ownership is cheap.

Not really. A wealthy activist and a Globe Columnist participating in a stalking campaign to ruin the life of a sports radio host, which ultimately gave him severe mental health issues and nearly drove him to commit suicide, is no laughing matter. Not to mention all of the money they cost the Jimmy Fund.

I think the Jimmy Fund will be fine. Callahan used it as a reputation launderer for years. Just because you make a couple of hospital appearances a year doesn't mean you're not a piece of shit.

A couple of things can be true. Minihane was done dirty by the Globe/Murchison while also being a bad guy.

Minihane just got in one dose the stuff he was dishing out for years. Bully gets punched in nose, runs away whining. Story as old as time.

Stalking to ruin his life?

Seriously, the people who post a ton here about sports radio who aren’t sock puppet accounts themselves lack perspective in a cultish way.

I take it that you don't know much about Murchison/Leung/Globe situation with Kirk. Here is a cliff notes version:

Bob Murchison, who is a wealthy activist, became obsessed with Kirk and joined forces with Shirley Leung of the Boston Globe. They spent nearly every day for months calling advertisers and sending emails full of lies and out-of-context clips to advertisers in an attempt to get K&C off the air and advertisers to drop WEEI. Leung admitted to Minihane over the phone that she was doing this and working with Murchison. Murchison began stalking Kirk and his family, including trying to dig up information on his adopted daughter from Iowa as well as his wife. What they did to him was vile, and it nearly drove him to commit suicide. That was why Kirk took time off in mid-late 2018. He called in one morning to explain what happened and that he had checked himself into a Boston-area hospital. While Kirk was still in the Hospital, which Murchison and Leung knew as well that he considered taking his own life, they continued to relentlessly contact advertisers and Murchison continued to stalk Kirk and his family. After Kirk was let go, Leung boasted about her work on Beat The Press and Jim and Margery, and Murchison continued stalking and harassing Kirk, following him to Barstool.

Can you explain this? Is there any evidence/reporting that supports this statement?
Ordway and Gerry Callahan have both told Kirk that Murchison and the Globe cost the Jimmy Fund at least $6 Million over a 2-3 year period.

I forget the exact details but Murchison has a transgender kid and became angry after listening to a show segment where a topic on K&C was that kids shouldn't be allowed to physically alter their gender until a certain age.

The fact that Cheung & Murchison were successful in getting Kirk fired and Kirk was unsuccessful in his attempts to get his perceived enemies fired doesn't exactly disprove the point that @joe dokes made.

That "cost" seems unlikely. Out of curiosity, did anyone confirm this. Any actual proof? I'm just asking questions.

The rest reads like some Turtleboy fanfic. (speaking of going after another's family members).

And, IIRC, Leung wrote her first WEEI column -- and advertisers started pulling back -- after Fauria mocked Brady's agent, Yee, with some cartoon "Chinese" talking. It wasn't even on Minihane's show.

Ban me off this board, I do not care, but Kirk absolutely got what he deserved (and if anything he got off light).

I am a trans woman who works from time to time with trans youth and Murchison and Leung were absolutely correct to take this up as a crusade. Do not come after trans kids, period.

Asking advertisers “hey do you want to associate with this garbage?” is a good thing to do. Transphobia should carry with it material harm and i’m glad Kirk got someone with the gumption to fully make him miserable.

Kirk is lowlife shithead who got what he deserved. I have always had a deep respect for Murchison and Leung for what they did.

Well if Ordway and Callahan said it, it must be true.

They average about $3.3 million per telethon. If it truly cost the Jimmy Fund at least $6 million over 2-3 years that would be almost the equivalent of not having the telethon at all, so color me extremely skeptical.

Yeah, I read the reporting on it before responding to you. Even the Turtleboy version.

Contacting advertisers about the show on which they are advertising and appealing to them not to do so is not stalking. It’s not even on the same continent. And Minihane appears to have had lifelong depression and mental health issues, which he has been remarkably forthright and candid about, which is a great thing.

I’m glad that he’s doing better mentally, and did not take his own life.

Super interesting that your Cliff’s Notes version of things left out the reason for Murchison’s involvement, though. Just randomly “became obsessed,” huh?

I think the "wealthy activist" descriptor was all one needed to read to immediately dismiss everything else that was written.

Pretty sure that won’t get you banned.

Appreciate the work you do, sad we live in a time where broken people profit economically and politically from targeting trans folks.

This probably says more about me than about Kirk, but I always thought Kirk said all that so that firing him would take longer.

Not sure what it says about you, but I have little doubt that that's what Kirk would have said about someone else in that position.

This was a pretty good listen. I'd buy Stewart's book about the Rise and Fall of EEI.
I've never particularly liked Stewart, but I'd totally buy that book as well, hope he actually gets it done someday (even if its self published via Amazon or something like that). From someone who probably listened to EEI 8 - 10 hours a day back in the early 2000s (a time when Felger was just this little known Pats beat reporter who'd occasionally show up on The Big Show and was actually very pro Belichick and Brady) the station so deserved the massive fall from grace it had and would absolutely be interested in a read through a combination of what I would figure would be stuff I'd be familiar with as well as stuff that was totally new to me.

Wow The Murrays were actually trying to argue that the 1997 lottery was rigged against the Celtics? That doesn't make a whole lot of sense to me.

I have heard various theories about that Draft Lottery. Even if that is true, why would the NBA step in to make sure that Tim Duncan went to San Antonio of all places? I could see if it were NY or LA because its a huge market, but not San Antonio.

Maybe Stern really hated Pitino and stuck the Celtics with the frozen envelope - except this time the commish knew NOT to pull that one out? [/tin foil hat]

The idea isn’t that it was rigged in favor of San Antonio so much as against the Celtics. Stern hated Red. Despised him, and wanted to do anything to keep the #1 pick out of Boston’s hands so long as Red had any connection to the organization, no matter how thin.

This isn’t a niche theory limited to talk radio bozos and Bill Simmons, it’s been kicked around for years along with a number of other draft rigging scenarios. It’s as silly as most conspiracy theories involving the NBA. (The one around crooked refs has some weight in my mind, but…)

its not rigged per say but since the 80's for sure all pro sports try to sit up storylines to make the most $$$ for the leagues the NBA wants to be a global leage since 1997 outside the U S a lot of non usa people are spurs fans

its got real bad since around 2005 when i first notied it was 2015 because it happhed in denver yes the broncos def was a all time unit but manning could not throw the ball longer than 20 yards and the refs balied denver out of at least 3 or 4 jams that season i hate to say it but that denver team was a 9-7 10-6 team that should had lost in the wild card or div round

Your candor is refreshing, j-man, and you're right about that Denver team. Juxtapose how the league mobilized so quickly to squash the story of steroid/HGH deliveries to Peyton Manning's home against how they handled the Colts accusation of deflated footballs being a factor in a game they lost 45-7.

Felger's been pretty great the last couple of days, IMO. He's spot on with his Pats taeks, and bringing lolz telling the Murrays to "go back to Infowars" with their Cs lottery conspiracies and with his "I only started watching college football 5 days ago to gamble on it. I lost money gambling on the NFL, so I'm chasing it now on college."

Felger deftly handled a caller last week who wanted him to concede that the only reason they hired Mayo was because he was black. Said, sure, Mayo sucked up to the owner, lobbied for the job, and it worked. But would have none of the DEI angle.

Felger is way too smart to fall into Dennis and Callahan level race commentary. I don't think he is "woke" or whatever buzzword you want to use, but that simply isn't his lane. The post-Brady/Belichick Patriots so far have given the show plenty to chew on in regards to sports takes.

I have not listened a ton outside of Youtube clips, but I would love to hear him go in on the Bruins. They seem to be the one team that Mike genuinely likes, and when he critiques the Bruins, it comes from a place of true fandom.

You will probably get it today. Felger is not a fan of McAvoy and Pastrnak as the core guys. I expect him to say they should trade one or both today.

Bruins talk generates a lot of phone calls, too. The B's have a rabid fan base and their rise to power essentially put the Sports Hub over EEI in the early years. That team is at the precipice of a crossroads, as Little Carmine would say. They could be in for a Patriots-style rebuild here sooner rather than later.

I might be mistaken but I thought 98.5 did this thing years ago where they switched up the shows by slot, anyone else recall this?

And speaking of the Off Air Show, holy cow was the audio quality awful. I don't recall hearing a reason why they switched from FB to YT but if I had to guess it was to in theory reach a larger audience?
Felger reading off comment after comment of "audio sucks!" while Murray squirmed was kind of funny.

I actually do remember them doing that, but just not the details. I believe they switched because it is easier to set up and easier for more people to access. During the pandemic Glen Phillips from Toad the Wet Sprocket started doing livestreams 4 times a week on Facebook, but then switched to YouTube for similar reasons, but kept the FaceBook feed as well. I think they will fix the audio moving forward.
