I expect them to go nuclear today over the Marcus Smart news. Few current players they hate more than him. Maybe only Cam Newton.

Jim Murray : Sports talk :: Tucker Carlson : Politics

Maybe that's too far but the way he's always fabricating an angle for the purposes of telling the audience they should be angry at X local sports team feels similar.

Then again, didn't he once tell a caller he hopes his children die? Maybe it isn't too far.

You guys are crazy, Jim Murray cracks me up. We're on the same humor wavelength or something. He doesn't take himself too seriously, despite whatever hot take of the week he's spouting. His production bits are pretty good, too. ("Oh Schedule Day" sung to the tune of "Oh Christmas Tree", etc.)

He works really well with Felger and Mazz, and the good chemistry is noticeable on the air. You can tell they enjoy working together.

I can't tell if this is a joke or not, I've literally never heard anyone say a positive thing about Murray. He's the absolute worst. Zero redeeming qualities.

I have a dozen or so posts here about this but Weekday Jim Murray is the worst. He’s a miserable prick despite having his dream job and his bits are terrible including the one you posted.

Weekend Jim Murray is not as bad because he’s with Gasper who’s not a troll.

At least going off the top of my head, I struggle to think of an athlete that has gotten as much over the top hate from Felger and Mazz as Cam Newton has the past year. So they surely will be celebrating massively today on his release.

What I'd hope to hear from them today is them giving Belichick credit for doing what they have wanted so much, picking Jones over Cam and releasing Cam. And an apology for the over the top takes they have had, which may have hit its zenith this week as Felger proclaimed that Belichick was a lazy coach and was keeping Cam simply so he could do less work.

I'm sure we won't get that though, or if we do it will be about 1 minute in a 4 hour show. Most likely what we will get is them creating a massive strawman about how the entire fanbase wanted Cam (completely untrue), how the entire media wanted Cam (completely untrue) and how the fanbase and media should now be bashing Belichick for releasing him. We will also have them questioning the locker room, and saying that Cam's release will cause massive locker room issues (despite them giving Cam no credit for this in the past). They will also say Jones is not ready to start and that we should be really concerned (cue more 4 hour shows about why they should bring Jimmy G back). And finally, they will gloat massively over how correct they've been this entire time and that they know things better than everyone else.

Kicking off the show saying BB should be fired if they don’t at least make the divisional round. They got a pass last year, not again. Funny, it sure didn’t seem like a pass to me when they were tearing the team to shreds four hours a day since last summer.

where I was last at
Unfortunately, I only caught the very end of the call. Apparently his absence was not due to him being incarcerated as speculated by Mazz and Murray previously.
They just replayed his call. Apparently he had some serious medical issues (still does) which kept him off line etc for the past few years. The on-topic thrust of his call was BB's record without Brady and that he's on the hot seat with the Mac from Tuscaloosa.

Because BBs coaching record with the Browns 30 years ago is of course super relevant to 2021.

I just unmuted my TV (had Zo & Bertrand on then took a cal) and heard Carlton yelling. When did he come back? That voice is terrible.

Felger doing his monthly "cap is crap" goalpost moving segment ("My only point is..." and circulating one of his many changing reasons the cap is crap with zero context provided). Carlton objects. They're both right and they're both wrong, all at the same time. Douche on douche crime.

He called in a week or two ago. Had a good opening line (“Cat Boy got married?!?!!?). Didn’t get into specifics, but admitted he’s been dealing with a serious medical issue.

5 PM hour has been big for celebrity callers (Carlton, Angelo from Everett and Danny in Quincy screaming his head off).

Earlier Dakota called saying that he put 20K on the Cardinals over 8.5 wins.

Why did he sell his soul for hot takes. He seems like he would have had a really good career As a beat writer
Because being a beat writer is difficult, with long hours, shit pay, no job security, the people you cover think you’re subhuman (and most are absolute idiots who give the same five canned responses or outright lie to you) and half of your audience thinks you’re an idiot and the other half thinks you’re making everything up. Not only that but you’re away from the people who love you for 150+ days a year AND you have to make sure you get every piece of news first or your boss is up your ass.

At least being on the radio pays and you don’t really have to deal with any of the above crap. I wouldn’t want to be a beat writer for anything.

Well, almost. I'd wager the audience and it's thoughts on you would be the same on sports radio as it is on a newspaper beat. Particularly the thinking you're an idiot thing and particularly for Mazz.

Yeah, but he doesn’t have to travel or work more than, what, 30-35 hours a week all-in? Shit, he doesn’t even need to prepare for the show because he talks out of his ass as a self-conscious strategy. Lack of knowledge is almost irrelevant in talk radio; but you can’t get away with that as a beat writer.

And how many people that he dumps on, athletes or coaches, does he have to confront in person anymore? Zero?

Guessing a four hour show equals around three hours of actual on air time, x 5 days a week = 15ish hours, plus an hour (again minus ads) extra for the five days when the baseball show is on (seasonal). So his workweek is about 15 to 20 hours a week depending on the time of year. Though I guess it's also implied that he has to watch every sporting event, which many people do anyways for free.

I've always been curious what they get paid. I can remember when D&C were in their prime and it would get leaked that they were each making a million a year. Obviously F&M are a ratings juggernaught but I'd be surprised if they got half that.
But again I really have no idea.

Yes, that’s definitely true. But I’m sure the money he makes more than compensates for having to deal with his audience. Also, I think he knows that his job is to provoke where you could argue as a beat writer his job was to inform.

So dealing with angry constituents is a feature of his job, not a bug like at the old place.

Don’t forget, he has endorsements too. I’d be shocked if he wasn’t making over a million.

Good radio personalities put substantially more time into their shows than just the on-air time. I have no idea what Mazz puts in - his shtick makes it seem like he puts in very little but I don't want to assume anything, as shtick is just shtick - but I'd wager it's quite a bit more than 20 hours per week.

Also, I don't know what Mazz specifically makes, but radio is a pale shadow of what it was when D&C were at their peak. https://www.statista.com/statistics/253185/radio-station-revenues-in-the-us-by-source/ gives some info. I would be that salaries are down roughly the same percentages?
