Pittsburgh trades Sheahan and Brassard to Florida for Bjugstad and McCann. Picks also involved.

Edit: Looks like a 2nd and two 4ths going to FLA

What happened with Bjugstad? Thought he would be a good power forward but looks like he never took the leap to the next level. Maybe riding shotgun to Sid or Geno will help.

Some Bobrovsky to Florida rumors:

There are rumors of mutual interest with he and Panarin wanting to join Barkov and Dadonov in Florida long term.

They have Luongo at $4.5 AAV through 21/22, and Reimer at $3.4 AAV through 20/21. I guess they could buyout or retain on Reimer, but the Luongo deal is pretty bullet proof due to the recapture penalties, I believe.

Not sure what their angle is, but to me Bob doesn’t make much sense.

I’m not sure I understand the Leafs rush to get this one done. The only “win” for the Leafs, I guess, is they lock him up before he is eligible for an offer sheet? Marner is refusing to talk extension until the year is over, so perhaps they didn’t want to have both unsigned come 7/1? That is a really high cap number and zero FA years bought.

Anyways, the AAV appears to be $11.634 million.

Between here and everywhere.
The Leafs bought 1 year of FA.

Still a horrible deal. When Marner signs in the off-season they're going to have on or about 50% of the cap tied into 4 players - Tavares, Matthews, Nylander, and Marner. YIKES.

Let me correct myself. Not a terrible deal in isolation - but they're going to have Toronto beer leaguers filling out their 3rd and 4th lines next year.

Yeah that seems like the makings for a pretty top-heavy team, and considering they still have mediocre-to-poor goaltending and improved but not great defense...

Yeah, I'm just not buying it with Andersen. He seems to have improved his stats over last season (and looking them up I was stunned to see he was 4th in Vezina voting) but he seems like the quintessential "sink or swim" guy.

I probably have a lot (maybe too much?) when I’m ranking goaltenders. I mean, Andersen is right around top ten for sure, but I don’t really rate him until he gets on a playoff run. He’s better than mediocre for sure, but I’d take a bunch of guys over him.

He made to game 7 of the conference finals with the Ducks in 2014/2015.

He has a career .919 regular season save percentage, and .912 in the playoffs which is pretty good. Andersen hasn’t been very good against the Bruins, particularly in the playoffs last season so maybe that is clouding judgement. I do think he’s one of the better goalies in the league.

Yeah my bad...I would have picked someone else as goalie of that Ducks team, maybe getting Anderson’s confused.

And I will say that his numbers were better than I thought this year as well. I’ll revise my previous statement to say that he’s a top ten goal keeper for sure, but still don’t feel super comfortable with him if I’m a Leafs fan. And that may be my bad, but I sure hope I’m not proved wrong.

I'd definitely put him in my top 10, but I really have no idea what that would even look like. There's been a lot of flux among the top goalies the past couple of years. I definitely think he's in that 2nd tier though, after Gibson/Vasilevsky/Bobrovsky. Somewhere in the 4-8 range, probably closer to the lower end of that.

I think he gets overlooked a lot because of how consistent he is. He's never had a Vezina caliber season, but hasn't ever had a season where he hasn't been really good. That's pretty valuable.

On a minor tangent, Tuukka's sv% is up to .922 for the season...

It'll very likely be a late 2nd rounder, and he has some value on the PP. I don't think it's terrible but if that's the price for Boyle then I can see why the Bruins haven't fixed their hole at center.

Agreed. If that's market price I hope the Bruins just ride with what they have.

Poile traded a 1 for Paul Gaustad way back when, so I guess the Boyle move is a repeat of that.

The McLeod move is about as unecessary as they come. Someone will waive a better player in the coming days.

And now for something completely different, and because I don’t think it’s threadworthy on its own.

On Saturday, a brawl broke out in the 3rd period of an AUS (association of university teams in Atlantic Canada) game between St. Francis Xavier University and Acadia. We’re talking a player leaving the bench and coaches going after each other, real fire and brimstone stuff. The other shoe dropped Monday, when St.FX head coach Brad Peddle and player Sam Studnicka reported the impetus of the brawl was a comment by one of the Acadia players mocking a St.FX player for his surviving a sexual assault.

Today, AUS handed down the first of its suspensions, including both head coaches getting two games. In addition, AUS is conducting a second level investigation to determine the validity of Peddle’s and Studnicka’s accusations.

Just to tack on a little context: if playing Junior A in order to go to school at an NCAA program is a way to maybe find a way to have a pro hockey career, playing AUS hockey after a Junior A stint is likely just about getting a couple more years of organized hockey in before joining the work force, armed with a diploma that your junior career payed for. So few of these kids can expect to play much higher than senior league hockey after their time in university is done. Also, one should expect a higher level of reasoning here than a Major Junior or pro program, since they’re actively participating in higher education (I’m sure someone will hit me with an “objection: facts not in evidence” post, but it’s an expectation). And yet, here we sit, with a pretty heavy accusation that the hockey team for one of the better universities in eastern Canada has both players that attack sexual assault victims in order to win a game, and a coach that, at minimum, looks the other way on it.

Sam Studnicka, the victim of the comments is Jack’s older brother. Also it wasn’t 100% clear to me that he was the sexual assault victim or if the comments were referring to a family member / significant other / etc. Whatever the case, that’s really horrible

Not to make to much light of this (if the allegations are true, that's reprehensible and speaks to a deeper issue here), but I was wondering why there was no goalie fight. Then I saw the two goalies.

And if what they're saying is true, about the ref and coach being notified, how the fuck was that kid allowed to lineup for the faceoff?

That may have been intentional. For instance, a few years ago, there was a big revenge porn case in Nova Scotia, where a girl got drunk and sexually assaulted, and the boys later spread pictures of the assault to taunt the girl. She eventually committed suicide, but the Crown picked up the case. However, even after the guilty plea, because everyone concerned was a minor at the time of the initial incident, gag orders were put in place preventing the naming of both the victim and the assailents. I believe the court finally relented in the case of the victim, as her name was well-known across the country, but I don’t believe the assailents had been named to date.

That has FLA Panthers written all over it.

If I'm the B's I'd probably pass on Panarin unless the cost comes way down. At least with Stone you have a chance to resign him if he loves the city/team.

Does anyone know what WPG/NAS have for assets compared to BOS? I hear they are going to press hard for a FW as well with Stone/Duchesne/Panarin the top names.

They are all positioned about equally. All 3 teams traded their first round picks last season.

Nashville is short a 2nd round pick this year after the Boyle trade. Their top prospects are probably Eeli Tolvanen and Dante Fabbro. Fabbro was taken a few pucks after thenB’s took McAvoy and is still at BU. Tolvanen was a late first rounder in 2017. Lit up the KHL for his age and is currently with the Preds AHL affiliate. He’s probably the highest rated prospect among the 3 teams. They don’t really have much in the way of traceable assets on their active roster either.

Winnipeg has Logan Stanley and Kristian Vesalainen as their top prospects. They could probably deal a player like Jack Roslovic, Nic Petan or Brendan Lemieux off off the roster, which would be similar to say Heinen on the Bruins. Winnipeg appears to need a center more than a winger, so Duchene would probably make more sense than Panarin or Stone. Stone is from Winnipeg though so maybe they think they could get him and keep him. However, they have a cap crunch ahead this summer when Wheeler’s extension kicks in and they need new deals for Trouba, Laine, Connor, and Tyler Myers.

Isn't Carlo a bigger asset than Grzelcyk? I can't see Grzelcyk being a major piece of a trade plus he has the low cap hit this team needs until they can get Backes resolved.
I could see them moving Carlo as it is going to be difficult to extend both he and McAvoy long-term esp if they want to add a top 6 FW.

If they traded Carlo or DeBrusk it would be for a serious upgrade with term on the deal.

FWIW....

I would not be stunned if Grzelcyk or Krug is moved in a major trade over the next 18 days for a controlled player with Vaakanainen coming up to Boston.
Why should I take what this account says seriously on the trade front?

Is this SoxScout? Same twitter icon graph as the @RedSoxStats account but gold for the Bs.

If so, I don’t think he’s dialed in to sources so much as he generally knows what he’s talking about.

I suspect Gryz has elevated his status enough to be a valuable add in with an elite prospect like Donato and a higher draft pick. Just depends on what the return is.

Is it just me or does it feel like there are more sellers this year? Even teams currently in the playoff picture are looking to get assets for their FAs that they don’t seem confident in re-signing.

They were saying on TSN there are definitely more potential sellers which could suppress the return on the mid tier guys but price will still be high on the elite players

That stick caught him totally wrong...didn’t look like it was that bad but his teeth exploded.
The top of the line mouth guards are pretty good...maybe worth sporting something.
