So it took 4 games before the Torts/Laine relationship came to a head. For a small market team, Columbus sure finds themselves in the news quite a bit.

Laine has always been interesting. He is a prolific goal score but he's underlyings are always pretty terrible. He doesn't do a ton away from the puck and his defense is suspect. Two things that will drive Torts bonkers. He's been in columbus for 4 games, but has been outscored 4-1 at even strength and out chanced 30-12.

I respect Torts as a "reformer of players" in much the same way Belichick is. There are good players that broke Belichick's rules, took their punishment, learned from it, and were better. Torts has openly talked about how his tough coaching entails clear communication to the player about EXACTLY what he isn't doing right. I really hope Laine learns from this opportunity.

An now in Columbus, Mikko Koivu has retired.

Also, apparently Portzline (CBJ's Athletic reporter) thinks Torts might want out and the Laine benching was a Costanza trying to get fired by the Yankees type thing.

Never a dull moment with that team. It's amazing.

From The Athletic:

The Pittsburgh Penguins named Ron Hextall as general manager and Brian Burke as president of hockey operations on Tuesday.

Hextall is the complete opposite of Jim Rutherford. Hextall was super conservative in Philly while Rutherford was among the most active traders in the league. Rutherford leaves behind shitty goaltending, shitty defense, no prospects and no draft picks this year. Geno is 34, Sid and Letang are 33.I think Hextall has his work cut out for him navigating the end of the Sid/Geno/Letang window and then rebuilding.

Whatever. I can do that, too.

As long as I'm the only one on the ice and you give me about a minute and a half to sort myself out afterwards.

Leafs blew a 5-1 lead with less than a minute to go in the second period, end up losing 6-5 in OT to Ottawa

Between here and everywhere.
I thought his move to score on the 1v2 last week was even better

Yea, that was a nice play, but honestly the Carolina D got real lazy on this play. It was sweet, but toe-drag/between the legs isn't that uncommon anymore.

What kills me about this play is how smooth and effective it was at creating space for the pass. It looked virtually effortless, but is something that most NHL'ers would probably fuck up.

Look at his footwork on this angle, just absolutely fucking sick.

I like your argument...I guess I’m just coming from the perspective of someone with much better footwork than hands;)
Either way, dude looks unshackled and you can see why Columbus insisted on him being included in the deal.

Forgot to add that this was the article that got me to subscribe to the athletic. This is a brutal quote:
“This is a group of people not acting honorably on the basis of business, not treating people and their partners with respect,” said one vendor. “If those are the borders that define a dumpster fire, then there is indeed a fire burning within the borders of this dumpster.”

Just left an outdoor rink and the sun was making the entire area behind the goal turn to slush. Weird the NHL didn't see this coming.
