Team Scores after Session 1

Team Scores
1. Iowa - 19

2. Penn State - 17

3. Missouri - 14

4. Arizona State - 13

t4. NC State - 13

6. Oklahoma State - 12.5

Iowa had more qualifiers (10) than Penn State (8). Iowa went undefeated through the Round of 32. Penn state lost one bout at 165 (10-Travis Wittlake, Oklahoma State dec. 23-Joe Lee, Penn State, 8-1). But bonus points for Penn State somewhat minimized the potential greater point difference.

I've got a major enterprise software production deployment at work that will span the weekend, so I may not be able to get in here and provide updates, but will do my best.

Damn. 1-2 record for UNCO and the lone win is up against the two seed in the second round.

Great year overall for the program. I didn't watch any today, but planning on watching tomorrow and this weekend. Who is competition for Lee for the hodge?

Here were the rankings going into the Nationals.

Interesting, Lee's stiffest competition comes from a teammate. I see Gable Stevenson as a dark horse. Tremendous wrestler.

Correction, 4 of 4 Nittany Lion champions return next year. On Wednesday, senior Nick Lee said that he plans on taking the NCAA's extra year of eligibility to come back for one more season with the Nittany Lions. “I am definitely gonna take that year, I think it would be crazy not to,” Nick said.

Of course, on the Iowa side, Spencer Lee can continue his quest for a fourth title, and Alex Marinelli, Austin DeSanto and perhaps Michael Kemerer (if he wants to pursue a seventh year of college) can have two more NCAA title shots instead of one.

The 2022 season looks to be an exciting one.

Next yea's championship will be held @ Little Caesars Arena | Detroit, MI, March 17, 2022 - March 19, 2022

The names on the qualifier list is a who's who. Some of the weights classes are just mind bending. I'm surprised at the number of active duty military qualifiers - 20 spread over 6 weight classes, if my count is correct.
Couple questions - I recently started following this stuff.

I know Dake and Burroughs both won worlds golds at 74 and 79, so that's why they get their positions. So, Cox won gold, but at 92, and Snyder won bronze, but since it's at 97, he gets his ride to the finals? Is that how that shakes out?

Why are the 74 and 97 brackets so empty? Did everybody flee those divisions because of those guys? I feel like that's an obvious answer, but still need to ask it.

My friend’s son (Garrett Ryan) won one match as the 8 seed at 125 kg but then lost 11-0 to the #1 seed. Is it single elimination? Is he done?

Re. Snyder: I think your phrasing ("gets his ride to the finals") is throwing me off. Seems to imply he is in the final match of his Olympic qualifier tournament weight class bracket automatically.

Snyder automatically qualifies for the qualifier tournamant 2 ways: first as a winner in whatever of the two Final X events he wrestled, and then second as a World medalist. All World medalists get an automatic berth to the Olympic qualifier tournament. But that does not automatically qualify him for the final match/

Of note, there are only 6 weight classes in the Olympics - for all 3 forms: men's freestyle, women's freestyle and greco-roman.

Dake made Nolf look like a rag doll. So once again...Dake vs. Burroughs.

A great upcoming match. Old vs new guard Penn State matchup: 30-year old Magic Man David Taylor vs 25-year old upstart Bo Nickal. I see fireworks in the future.

J'Den Cox had a royal f**k up not making weight. I was disappointed in Zain Retherford's 8-5 upset at the hands of Joey McKenna.

I've enjoyed the women's freestyle. Some tough matches. I think Helen Maroulis (57kg), returning from a 2-year recovery period from a concussion, and 5-world title winner Adeline Gray (76kg) have to be favorites for Gold.

And I still cannot get into Greco-Roman. Boring.

Also, it should be clear that the basis for scoring is very, very different than NCAA college wrestling. For example, merely rolling in a continuous motion an opponent's shoulders over the mat is a 4-point score. In the NCAA, you have to sustain that for at least a 2-count. So matches can reach an advantage of 10 points (technical superiority (TS)), and automatic victory, pretty quickly.

I think the coverage was at best mediocre. When you have an event with simultaneous matches, they should split the screen. The NCAA did this very, very well.

Congrats to Dake. A victory hard-earned. Burroughs just seemed out of gas.

One thing for sure, there is an upstart youngster movement, especially in women's freestyle. Several teenagers going toe-to-toe with world champions.

I think all told, the US will be well represented in the Olympics.

Final note: can anyone beat Gable Stevenson?
