all depends on the price. In BB I trust, but I still like to know how good a deal he gets.

edit: besides, who the hell is going to say they know punting well enough to judge that BB made a bad choice sticking with Allen? I want to see the first poster claim they know better here, the flames will be visible from orbit.

He did have a great super bowl in a situation where he was generally overshadowed by the otherworldly punting from the other guy. Punters, especially for the Pats, are funny to assess. For the most part, they don't really matter, but when they do they do.

I legitimately think he would’ve been a worthy choice for SB MVP. Glad to keep him in the fold going forward.

Is he the first punter since Bellichick took over to get a second deal? I think he is.

Funny thing is, I thought he was mediocre up until the SB, when he lit it up.

I don't think so, but regardless he was excellent in that game.

I'm not even sure he was the Most Valuable Punter that day.
Wasn't he overshadowed by his opposing number?

edit: or what Saints Rest said better.
If you look at the box score, Hekker had better numbers.

If you put it in the context of what the Patriots needed out of him that day, and how his performance added to the ability to impede the Rams offense, the difference in stats is negligible.

Allen had a great game, when his team needed him to do so

Hekker turned field position.

Allen was a master at directional kicking and pinning the Rams deep.

Not surprised Hekker's raw numbers were better, but Allen was magnificent in setting up the defense deep in Ram territory. A strategic, tactical weapon.

They both punted really well and the numbers are inherently situational, but as that game went on, and as I watched it later, it sure seemed like Hekker was absolutely vital for the Rams. The Pats were shutting down the Rams offense from snap 1. The Rams needed Hekker's bombs and rolls to keep the Pats from getting into field goal position. For example, Hekker's punt out of the end zone in the second was a bomb. And then the roll he got working from the end zone in the third was key for them.

Allen's were great for pinching LA deep. Hekker switched really bad fields for the Rams.

Both punters got some very lucky bounces, but Hekker's lucky bounces were as the result of short kicks that Edelman couldn't get up to field and then rolled, whereas Allen's lucky bounces were punts landing at the 5 then not bouncing into the end zone.

Hekker won the distance contest but Allen stuck three inside the 10 so Slater could do his thing and pin the Rams to bad field position. Maybe a draw in the punting war.

Hekker helped ensure the game wasn't a blowout with long punts from deep in LA's end, preventing the Patriots from getting the short field they normally would have had, given the way the defense was playing.
Allen helped ensure that that's all Hekker could do, by continually pinning LA deep.

Sorry for the hijack, but I love that a mid-March thread about resigning our punter can turn into a legit conversation that includes a compare and contrast between the two SB punters.

every time Hekker punted, Jules kept screaming for a Peter geee

(yeah, I know he's telling his guys to get away)

was he that average that he barely received a pay raise?
Not sure about net average but he was #16 out of 35 in simple average punt distance of those listed by football reference for 2018. That's just barely better than average. Although about half of those ahead of him kicked in domes or warm weather home sites. So, maybe that deal's a little light.

He'll end up somewhere by week five. He is not bad at all, and has shown he can handle high pressure punting. One ugly day from a punter that a team has internal doubts about and he is back in the league.

I'll guess Chicago. Now that Nagy has ruined placekicking there, he'll turn his attention to destroying punters after a bad week.
