Between here and everywhere.
More likely it’s 50% rust (first game in 9 days), 50% Winnipeg’s D being Josh Morrisey and 5 pylons. We can LOL Leafs all we want, but who doesn’t prefer Reilly, Muzzin, and Brodie over Morrisey, Pionk, and Forbort?
Yea. If not for the existence of an all Canadian division - it's likely that only Toronto and MAYBE Winnipeg even make the playoffs. These are not good teams, and their records are only indicative of how they did against other bad teams.

Holy fuck that was bad.

Montreal scoring on a open net breakaway, and Evans got absolutely demolished by the Winnipeg player (Scheiffle, I think) as he wrapped around the net to the open goal. He is not moving.

It was Scheiffle. He freight trained a defenseless Evans at full speed. Brutal.

It was totally unnecessary, and not even the right thing to do in an attempt to stop the goal. He needed to try a desperation stick poke to get the puck, instead he decided to try to decapitate the guy. What a dick move (Tom Wilson would be proud).

Scheifele had a crazed look in his eyes even after it was obvious Evans was in bad shape.

At first, I thought it was a desperation attempt to knock him off the puck before it went in. Then I saw the replay and it was anything but.

Shea Weber was MFing and staring daggers through Scheifele for a solid minute.

Yeah, anyone who says that wasn't a dirty hit is watching a different sport. He actually braced himself and then launched himself into the impact, and left his feet through the hit. It's just a gross, gross play.

Didn’t notice on first watch. But mad props to Ehlers for keeping the scrum off of Evans.

Edit - and the linesmen bracing off of him to keep him from being pushed down on Evans

Would the Kadri hit be the precedent here in any fashion? The biggest overlap that I can think of is that both made no effort to play the puck.

Yes. Both hits were late, high, and there was no attempt at a play on the puck. Kadri does have a history of suspensions that factors in as well. I’m expecting he’ll miss 6 games and be done for the series. But who knows with DoPS.

The hit was many illegal things but it wasn't high, at least initially. He hit him in the chest first. Then the fact he traveled the length of the ice with the sole purpose of wiping Evans out carried his momentum up to his chin.

Kadri also has a history. I don't believe Scheifele has ever been suspended, but I could be wrong.

Dart will land at less than 3 games.

As he comes up to this moment, it is totally unconscionable that Scheifle is not looking to play the puck. If he was not a complete goon, POS he might have even saved the goal.

Eh, I wouldn't go that far. He's a top end skill guy and doesn't have any history of this. He was racing back to try and prevent an ENG. He had a full head of steam in a split second made an awful decision with a terrible outcome. He deserves to be suspended but this doesn't rise to the level of a Raffi Torres, Nazem Kadri, Tom Wilson type kick-them-out-of-the-league incident for me.

Here
I think that’s a brutal, but legal, hit. Form was good, point of contact good. I think he’ll get suspended, but I don’t know what the technical justification will be, outside of “bad outcome.” Playing the puck at that speed would have required him to have gone directly into the crossbar. No way he could have stopped himself. I certainly think the intent was to stop the goal moreso than truck a guy for the sake of it.

I put this into the category of hockey is innately dangerous rather than dirty hit.

It's charging.

Can anyone think of a recent example of a guy getting a multi-game suspension for charging (assume the hit was otherwise legal)? I can't think of one off hand where the issue wasn't point of contact or something else.

Yeah, that's true. I thought some form of intent was required, but I looked it up again and it's strict liability. So it was definitely charging.

But I still do not believe there was any intent to injure and I don't think the form of the hit was bad at all, so I guess I'd give whatever the max charging penalty could be for suspension. It's also a rule refs don't call a lot in obvious situations, for example Krug crushing Robert Thomas a couple years ago.

Yeah but that was because Krug had his helmet off and it looked awesome. I mean look at that hair... (and yes this is just an excuse to post that picture)

Question about hockey rules: Suppose that hit on Evans prevented a goal. It would be a penalty shot, right?

And, I would assume the Jets get to put their goalie back in net for that?

Empty-net penalties like that are automatically awarded a goal. Same if you got tripped on an empty net breakaway, etc.

The word I keep coming back to for the hit is 'predatory', especially given the context of the ENG and time remaining. Much like the Kadri hit earlier in the playoffs, he can make a play on the puck and chooses not to against a vulnerable player. Those are the hits that need to be made examples of.

Edit: Maybe not, to TSC's point. Penalty shots explicitly talk about it being a breakaway, rather than a clear-path/last-defender rule like in basketball or soccer.

Why would it be a penalty shot? He wasn't on a breakaway at that point, he was attempting a wrap around.

No, it doesn't - because Evans wouldn't have been awarded a penalty shot.

Disagree. If Scheifele had kept striding all the way to the net and extended his stick to deflect the puck there's a good chance he prevents an ENG. Even though he coasted from the blue line (albeit already at high speed) his stick is about 3 feet from the post, and that's with his left arm tucked back (so as to deliberately drive his right shoulder up into Evans' head). If he leans forward and stretches out he can put his stick in the path of the wraparound attempt. Lining up a hit there while ignoring the puck has no chance whatsoever of preventing a goal.

It's fucking amazing how Tampa can throw huge fucking tantrums whenever a call doesn't go their way and not get slapped with an Unsportsmanlike.

And now they get the Montreal treatment and get a PP with a minute left to play.

I don't think this applies here because he wasn't on a breakaway.

In this context, if he knocks the net off on purpose or throws his stick at Evans to prevent a goal, this would apply.
Thanks. The big thing I was interested in was whether an empty net carried any weight in terms of a penalty shot, which it should, and you've all provided reference material that says some sort of breakaway is an automatic goal.
