I think Switzerland is a pretty good team, just like Austria and Czech Republic and Sweden and these well drilled teams that can stifle a top attack while being able to utilize their strengths offensively because they understanderstand themselves and have a plan.

agree on Mbappe.

And all of us, but I think that’s what you meant maybe.
It's a phrase that Jimmy Bullard uses every week on Soccer Am after they do the 'You Know The Drill Challenge' - even if the contestants lose, he always trots out that phrase. You know how i like to tickle myself in such ways. At least i think you do, maybe, kinda, not sure - ay?

The exact phrase he uses is 'Football's always the winner'.

I don't know enough about the history of Swiss football, but that has to be one of the greatest wins in team history, right? Beating the defending world champs at a major tournament being down two goals with ten minutes left in regulation.

They beat Germany in 38 and Italy (as host though) in 54 to advance to the quarters of the World Cups

They were also one of the first to puncture Spain’s invulnerability when they were at their peak - beat them in the 2010 WC group stage, so less on the line, but still a significant win.

I had to watch replays again this morning because they deserve them goddamnit. In France-Switz, it's wild to see France score their third at the 74' minute mark--what's their expected win percentage at that point, 95%? It's also jarring to see Benz and Griezmann out there still, because when you get to ET Sissoko pops onto the screen and you know it's a bad sign. Also so crazy that Mbappe shanks that chance off of the Pogba pass, but also that Coman hits the bar in added time. In between all of this, Gavranovic scores a goal that gets chalked off. Insanity.

In rewatching Spain-Croatia, the first that stands out is that Morata was having a quintessential Morata game until he very emphatically wasn't--he muffed a couple of great chances early on. The Pedri OG came from the center circle--Simon must be the most relieved Spaniard in the world, including Morata. To be fair, Simon's saves at 66' and 95' (ET) were insane reactions from close range quick strikes. Spain's first goal is probably their most encouraging because it was simply a dirty goal coming from Spain throwing numbers forward and having lots of talent on the field. Spain's reliance on well-worked goals and low risk plays is one reason why it can be so frustrating to watch them. Spain switched off for Croatia's second goal, but Croatia's third was a thing of beauty.
