Italy has started to look much more dangerous. Chiesa had a great chance and just missed.

But England's defense is a tough nut to crack.

The ratio of fouls to ref telling people to get up is amazing. Can we bottle this guy for the Gold Cup?
Gold Cup will have the opposite problem usually. We get dudes getting their clocks cleaned and need refs who will actually call the fouls.

Somebody said earlier that there was a real athleticism mismatch in England's attack vs Italy' defense and I think that is fair. Italy have gotten a lot of the ball but haven't really shown any real promise against a tight knit defense. That being said, if they continue to have the ball this much, something will break their way or England makes a costly mistake. I think England need to be a little more proactive pressuring Italy because I think a second goal is there.

Italy isn't at the 2010 Barca/Spain level where they can pass their way through a packed box, they need a few guys to pull off a quick turn and shoot

This game is pretty much as expected, except for the goal where England got six players into the box on a quick counter.

England have only one shot: the goal. Possession is 65/35 Italy. Neither team has created much. But England converted their one decent chance and that's the difference now. Unclear how Italy are going to be able to create anything from open play unless England just screw something up. That back 5 + 2DMs shape just leaves no space to attack. If Italy are going to get back into this, I feel like it's going to have to come from a dead ball or a penalty.

This is the first live event on a big channel I’ve sat and watched in real time in a long, long time. As a result, I never see commercials. If this shit is representative of what advertisers have proven sells product, we fucking suck as a species.

concur. Italy had some nice possesion and racked up the touches in the last 20 of the first. But didnt create much in the final third.
it feels like without a set play italy wont even this up

Chelsea just 5221 their way to a CL title and now England may win a Euro this way. It’s a tough way to score but it may be the evolving answer to Pep/Klopp all attack systems. It’s something to watch for me we may see many teams look to adopt as it is such a hard formation to break down.

I think a team like Italy need to move to a back 3 and get more men forward. It is risky but the men in the ball right now have so few options that you just need more people to force the defenders to shift and open up space

Also there was no reason to card Sterling there the trailing defender makes solid contact with his back leg. It was a good no call because he wasn’t getting to the ball but that was hardly a dive

With Bonucci and Chiellini, how can you get Italy into a back 3? The England trident will eat whoever pushes wide alive.
