Feel for Hummels a bit there. Completely wrong-footed by a strong cross, and Mbappe is lying in wait if he doesnt put a touch on it.

Muller just needed a little bit more space to interpret that ball.

France's defensive system looks really weird. There's unmarked players between the lines but I guess they're shut down fast enough that it doesn't matter. The other thing is that when Germany have the ball in their own half France are pressing with 3-4 players but keeping a mid block.

Kroos now moving outside a bit to have more time on the ball and allow Gundogan to have more space to operate.

I actually like both sets of jerseys... but both shorts are wrong.
Agreed, and that’s the point. Germany should have black shorts, and France white. I don’t understand why FIFA/UEFA have insisted on the all-one-color thing. That’s MLS’ move.

Having said that - great game so far.

Serious props to Lucas and Rabiot. They're shutting everything down on that flank going up against Kimmich and some strong attackers. If I'm Germany I try and move Gnabry around to find a 1v1 in space, drop Haavertz a bit deeper to help out Kroos with some combos, and keep Muller buzzing around the CBs to keep them off the others. If I'm France, I give Kante whatever the hell he wants.

We've reached the point where any all-time starting XI has to include Kante and the base of the midfield. No one has ever done the job better, and he allows everyone else in his side so much more freedom and confidence.

Oh god, that's a horrible head shot.

Edit: don't mean to insinuate it's intentional, but that was Goesen's hip to the side of Pavard's head. Pavard should be subbed off.

What an Mbappe shot! But how long were they gonna let him play before blowing the whistle?

Edit: You know Mbappe is other worldly when 3 defenders stand dead still in the box watching him instead of trying to close down his space. Defenders are deathly afraid of Mbappe in the box.

Not sure who the defender was but he was actually doing a great job staying in front of Mbappe there.

That was phenomenal

They really need to get Pavard off. He’s wandering aimlessly without the ball with his head down or his hands to his cheek. No idea how he was allowed to continue

If i were losing and had Sane and Werner on my bench, I would not wait until the 72nd minute to bring them on.

Not even like Varane is a huge drop off either.

This feels like a nut punch game for France. Letting Germany get some chances, disallowed goal, etc. Now the desperately out of form striker is on for Germany...all the signs are there.
