England look much better today. Saka has been really good starting in place of Foden. Grealish also doing well.

The 718
CRO-SCO may have the best looking kit matchup I've seen in a long time, except - that little stripe of red on the Scotland kit shouldn't be there.

The Tierney kid can defend. Is there a gif yet of him dumping over Modric?

Croatia are playing too slow and Scotland are playing too fast.

California. Duh.
I've watched enough of Dejan Lovren over the years to know that it won't take much for Scotland to get back into this game.

So in this situation, do we think a second dude standing near the free kick helps more than putting him in the box or at least closer to the potential action?

Ukrainian fandom shakes its collective head at Scotland not being able to hold the 1-1 tie

I really don’t want to go there . But growing up in Scotland I lived through the English media’s arrogance and contempt for Scottish football . People like Jimmy Hill. Look , I know it’s irrational .. I should have grown out of it by now. But I love seeing the English national football team falling on their arses. Yes, I probably need therapy .

I agree with your general premise, unless they're playing Germany, Italy, Austria, Argentina, Turkey, Japan or any of the lesser Tripartite Pact countries.

By your logic it’s okay to root for the US and England and Spain and Portugal and France and the Netherlands and Belgium and all the other countries who have committed genocide and colonizing war atrocities over the last _________________ periods of years?

It has nothing to do with Tripartite Pact countries. It’s all to do with football and being saturated with the English media ball washing the national England national team and having contempt for the other home countries. I’m talking about football and my personal experience not who invaded who .

My friends the O’Brien Brothers - Tommy and Jimmy, no less - root for England. I give them shit for it, but the English media and EPL are so hegemonic that it just feels right for them.

I’m half Scottish, a quarter French, and a quarter Italian, but I back the Azzurri (as a 2nd to the USMNT, natch) because I carry the last name. There’s no logic to it, pure sentiment.

I married into a Korean American family and my most exciting moment of the last World Cup was Son burying Germany with his amazing goal. And for my father-in-law’s 70th birthday, we got him on of those sleek all-red National team jerseys with his name and 70 on the back.

It’s all a complicated mash of emotions. Most Mexican American guys I play with back El Tri, except for a gay dude who won’t tolerate that chant - he’s passionately USMNT when the two sides meet.

above all else, it has to feel right. And be defensible to the ancestors you feel judging you in the back of your memory.

I get that you are.

I'm saying for me.

I do root for Scotland over England in everything if they happen to play each other.

If they play each other than sure! And this is the Euro, so they're mostly all imperials. It's a shame San Marino or Andorra didn't qualify!

But yes, you make a valid point, relax.

As an American, I root for basically every other country against England. Germany every time over England, absolutely. I'd want Mexico to beat England. There's something delightful about watching them lose. If the USMNT winning the World Cup is my ultimate dream as a sports fan, which it is, beating England in a big, important match, like a WC knockout, is like 1A. And it can't be on penalties either. It has to be by outplaying them.

I get hating on the circus surrounding the English team, especially for those living in the UK, but I can't help but love the English team. For starters, I really don't hate any soccer players, and I find the group of players very likeable. The fact that I watch the EPL religiously helps set a familiarity with the team and it feels like a group of all stars coming together. More importantly, there is something charming in the fanbase that is so passionate, so tortured, optimistic and yet pessimistic at the same time. They want to win so, so badly but they are also so afraid of failing yet again that they try not to get their hopes up and yet...they still feel like they have a chance. "30 years of hurt, never stop believing."

Pre-2004 Red Sox fans can really empathize with the English.

By the way, arguably the best two goals of the tournament have been scored against Scotland, no? (Modric yesterday and Schick shot from the halfway line.) THAT is the typically Scottish way to go out - with a few slightly different bounces of the ball against the Czechs, they could have won that match. I mean, they are probably one of the two or three worst sides in the tournament, but the nature of tournament football is such that they still had every reason to hope that they could qualify. Until they realized they were Scottish, anyway.
