Why wouldn't they be rooting for Spain and Poland to lose so that the 3rd place team only has 2 points?
Oh yeah. I mean I doubt Spain loses. More worried they play for zero GD to advance as 3rd team with best GD.

I always remember that the craziest part of that was that Denmark failed to qualify for the Euro's that year but were given a lifeline when Yugoslavia fell apart.
True, but if you think about it, this only meant they were something like the 9th best team in Europe at the time. They would have comfortably qualified if any format used past 1996 had been used.

Well, IIRC they were second in Yugoslavia's group, which is why they were picked to participate when Yugoslavia effectively ceased to exist. So...between the 9th and 16th best nation?

Sure, but let me put it another way. If a similar situation happened today and the replacement team went on to win the tournament, it would have been more impressive, because they weren't able to qualify on merit in a 24 team tournament.

So there are three teams in from Group A (Italy, Wales, Switzerland). Group D will get three unless Croatia and Scotland draw. Group E gets three if Spain and Slovakia draw. And the three giants from Group F should get through — France is already in, Germany and Portugal clinch with any result, and Portugal probably gets through with a one-goal loss to France.

I believe Ukraine advances if Croatia and Scotland draw, or if Slovakia beats Spain, or if Spain beats Slovakia by two or more goals. They also have possibilities if Germany or Portugal gets blown out. Finland needs at least two of those things to happen, plus some other things to break right.

I was only quibbling with the comment you made about Denmark being specifically the 9th best qualifier in 1992.

The 8 team tournament was such a different beast. A world class goalkeeper and some good fortune and suddenly the Danish team found themselves in the final where they scored fairly early and then passed the ball to Schmeichel about 60 grillion times. I suspect it was awful to watch as a neutral observer and I'm sure we were responsible for the subsequent rule change--no picking up the ball. Player for player that team was not good, especially with Michael Laudrup sitting out. I mean, I don't really see the comparison; this current team is solid even without Eriksen--the Andersen fairy tale references seem lazy.

Yeah, it is now the defacto defensive position for a free kick just outside the box.

DeBryune and Messi both had prominent FK they rolled under the leaping wall for goals last season (others I’m sure), this was the response and as others have pointed out it’s now a default setting.

Still now sure how you get stuck with that roll - too short & timid for the wall?

I’m too lazy to look it up, but I know Ronaldinho did a bunch of this when he was active. Feels too late to have been the first, but he put it on the map for me. It certainly added a dimension to his attempts.

Juan Mata, Andrea Pirlo, Messi, CR7 (probably inadvertently given his apparent accuracy), Iniesta… They’ve all been known to do it.

Throwing a guy on the ground as a general rule is pretty recent, though. I saw a bunch of it in South American highlights- maybe it first became popular there? It consumes yet another player for wall duty, though. It seems to me like you should be able to design and practice a wall that would be effective with alternating guys standing and jumping that could create the needed coverage with a minimal loss in effectiveness and not sacrifice an additional player. Whoever is jumping can’t be this guy, though.
