ESPN/NFL attempting to get college football to change playoff dates

Thought this was an interesting topic, personally I like the idea of moving this years game to Saturday the 2nd from NY Eve.  Also like the idea of not having the final on a Monday (but hate the idea of an NFL wild card game on a Monday).  Interesting to see what happens, probably nothing.

Agree that this could get very interesting.  If the CFP sticks to its guns, it is probably one of the few organizations with the clout to tell the NFL "thanks, but no."  I really liked the tripleheaders on NYE and NYD this year, and I agree that the Monday night is the best time for the championship game (I do wish they would kick off at 8 though).  If the NFL ran a Monday night playoff game against the college football championship game, unless the Pats are involved I would almost certainly watch the college game.  As someone with tickets for the Pats, I will be pretty pissed off if I have to go to a playoff game on Monday night, with the next day a normal workday-they have enough Sunday night/Monday night/Thursday night games as it is.

I liked the two triple headers too, but it will be strange having the semis on Dec 31. I get that the Rose Bowl has never not been in January, but it would be nice to have the semis (Orange and Cotton) on Jan 1 and the other three non-playoff games (Sugar, Peach and Fiesta) on Dec 31

ESPN expects New Year’s Eve to be a drag on next year’s numbers, with Sports Business Journal reporting Monday that the network is privately “prepared for double-digit drops in viewership.” According to the report, the network is lobbying College Football Playoff officials to move next year’s semifinals to Jan. 2. The concern over lower ratings is not unfounded; this past season, the three New Year’s Eve bowl games each earned their lowest rating in several years.
The Orange Bowl had a 5.0 rating, its lowest since 2011 and second-lowest since 1993 . The Fiesta Bowl drew a 4.6, its lowest since at least 1985. The Peach Bowl, a perennial New Year’s Eve game, tied its lowest rating since at least 2008 with a 3.4 — though that was primarily due to a shift from prime time to the afternoon.
