From the upcoming schedule for the new Fox Sports:

SOCCER – Tuesday/Wednesday/Thursday afternoon coverage
of the world’s most prolific club soccer competitions, the UEFA

featuring many of the world’s greatest and most successful clubs; the
world’s oldest soccer competition, the FA Cup; CONCACAF Gold Cup;
CONCACAF Qualifiers, FIFA Women’s World Cup coverage in 2015 and 2019;
FIFA Men’s World Cup coverage in 2018 and 2022; delayed matches in prime
time; weekly magazine and highlights shows.

Both networks will support soccer better than ESPN

ESPN is a big fat fail when it comes to US soccer coverage.

Go to the Soccer page and choose USA. The top 10 headlines list has three articles over a year old. There is not one article about the women's national team(number one in the world). The MLS can only be found through the drop down menus even though they are a top five sport(by attendance). ESPN has already trained a couple of generations of soccer fans to go elsewhere and I don't see it improving with advent of FOX sports channel.

Heh.  I have two nephews (brothers).  One works for the US Soccer Federation. The other works for ESPN.  I've forwarded your complaint to them.

ESPN is laying off an unspecified number of employees as it seeks to improve profitability, the company confirmed.
In a statement, ESPN said, “We are implementing changes across the company to enhance our continued growth while smartly managing costs. While difficult, we are confident that it will make us more competitive, innovative and productive.” A rep declined to comment further.

Kevin Negandhi. ESPN should do it sort of like all star balloting...1/3 public email, 1/3 players, 1/3 coaches and managers. Serious about public, unsure of what other groups would/should get a vote.

Just watched Around The Horn - I don't know why but I find myself watching it a few days a week. Anyway watching three of then argue about the anchored putting ban, they all made te point "well if its such a big deal why wait, do it now!!??!?!" Apparently none could actually, you know, find the answer to that question since they would then know that rules are changed only every 4 years per agreement and 2016 is the first chance they have to implement. Really?
and according to Jackie Mac Johnathan "Toes" is "a name we're used to hearing" with Chicago that needs to pick it up for them to beat Detroit.  It's better when they don't even try to talk hockey.

I watched Around the Horn for the first time in awhile last Tuesday. They lead off with the great Bruins comeback vs the Leafs. They get to Plaschke and I was getting douche chills in anticipation in what he was going to say, and he goes (paraphrasing) "I GIVE FULL CREDIT TO BRUINS POWER PLAY COACH... GEOFF WARD.. FOR DRAWING UP THOSE PLAYS WITH THE GOALIE PULLED"

I can just imagine ol' Bill watching the highlights of the comeback and hurriedly googling who the Bruins power play coach was 20 seconds before the show started. Although he probably didn't even do that, and a producer fed him it. Funny though to hear Geoff Ward mentioned on ESPN.

ESPN is literally a troll. Casually watching 20 minutes this morning the stories were: NY Rangers (their only mention of hockey), Tiger Woods (they never do golf stories unless it's Tiger) and (of course) a piece on how great LeBron is. They're the FOX News of sports.

I came into this thread just for the hell of it, but I honestly can't remember the last time I watched ESPN when 30/30, a football or baseball game wasn't on.  In all seriousness it has to have been a couple of years at least and I stopped watching for the reason above.  I don't even look at the website anymore because I can get sports news in so many more places than before, its strange when you think about it because I used to watch ESPN in the morning before work, then as soon as I got home after work, all while checking the website all day.

Speaking of which, what are good alternatives for ESPN.com if you're just looking for news, scores, stats ect? Yahoo and CBS websites seem like a mess but SI doesn't seem too bad.

Honestly, I go to the league's websites.  NHL.com and MLB.com at least have the banner at the top with recent results.

Whoever it was at mlb.com that thought auto-playing videos were ok needs to be executed, but other than that it's one-stop baseball shopping for me.

I have the Yahoo Sportacular app on my phone, and that takes care of the majority of scores and news updates.

As for ESPN.com, I still look for stuff from
Edes and Reiss. That's about it. I frequent Grantland quite a bit, but directly and not through the ESPN homepage. The main website just got too busy and all over the place for me to bother with it anymore.

Skip Bayless with an article on the front page today and the headline is 'The Spurs looked done in February but now they're back.' The Spurs were 8-3 in February including the tail end of an 11-game win streak. How is that 'done'? And they were 10-4 the next month before they tanked April.

ESPN, where we just make up false narratives to fit our hackneyed scripts.

Come on, that's not fair. How was he supposed to know the Spurs were playing well? Did you see them on SportsCenter?

ESPN has become nothing more than a PC mouthpiece, trying to enlighten us with their social sensitivities served up with a diet of marshmallows, mallow cups, pillsbury doughbuy byproducts.

Do you check out Reiss's pieces? I find that he usually has some useful nuggets.

On ESPN, it is hard to actually get scores without everything being sponsored by something.  It almost seems as if the show is more about the various sponsorships than it is actually highlights.  The last time ESPN was any good was when Keith Olbermann and Dan Patrick were together.  I am not a big fan of Stuart Scott at all.  Got tired of his, "boo-yah", "you see, what had happened was", "pookey, ray-ray and kinfolk", and his continual references to slang.  It was so tired and forced it was insufferable.

I like bashing ESPN as much as the next guy, but how is a Bruins game 2 EC victory bigger than the Heat winning the EC? Sometimes you guys are just reaching too much, and it's getting silly. "OMG, the headline isn't about my favorite team that just won."'

Edit: If it's the spelling issue, then my apologies. It's still pretty minor though.

It is about the spelling issue.  As to the hockey issue, last night the first headline was the Heat, the second headline was Kobe trying to convince Howard to stay and the third was the Bruins.

This thread would only be two pages if people didn't complain about (insert sport here) not getting enough coverage.

I apologize then, I agree it's silly when Kobe's period trumps the B's thumping all over Crosby's period.

No, just hockey. ESPN doesn't broadcast it, so they don't give it shit for play in their coverage.

Pretty simple.

So the Bruins complete a sweep of a team that seemed destined to win the east and includes the biggest name in hockey to move to the stanley cup finals, and right now espn is talking about the nba finals which isn't even today.  If that doesn't sum up everything that's wrong with espn I don't know what does.

NBA Finals air on the Disney/ABC/ESPN family of networks.  NHL doesn't.  Frustrating, but a fact of life.

I know why, but its pathetic for the premiere sports network in the country.  And coming up next after this we've got US mens soccer, then tennis, then golf, then more basketball talk

When 49ers receiver Michael Crabtree tore his Achilles last month, they spent 10 minutes on it during the afternoon SportsCenter. In May. A whole separate desk segment with NFL insiders on that one topic. I went to the bathroom, reheated some penne a la vodka, found some grated parmesan in the back of the fridge, came back, sat down and had that shocking "Bob Dylan's Desolation Row" moment: Holy shit, this is still going on?!?

Yes, I understand how the world works, but that still doesn't excuse it, nor does it make it ethical (and journalistic ethics should, to a degree, apply to sports journalism as well).  Its perfectly reasonable for people to continue to complain about how Sportscenter and ESPN.com allocate airtime so long they continue to purport to be a sports news organization.
