From the Tigers victory write-up: "The Yankees, without a World Series title since 2009..."
Seriously? That's some dire straits there.

That's NOTHING. You should have seen Stephen A. this morning on SportsCenter referring to the Yankees as "we." It went downhill from there. From the Tigers victory write-up: "The Yankees, without a World Series title since 2009..."

The next intelligent thing Jemelle Hill says will be her first. I don't understand why she is on ESPN or any other sports network. On the drive home today, I was listening to ESPN Radio around 4:30 (forgot the ipod, so was stuck with radio). Jonathan Coachman and Jemal(sp?) Hill were doing some sort of 5 Questions thing, and the question was posed to them: How likely is it that John Farrell leads the Red Sox to the playoffs next year?. Their responses left me incredulous. Hill replied that she thought it was a 25% chance and that Farrell would be thwarted by too many big contracts and too many disgruntled players. Coachman came it at 15% and agreed with her about the contracts and I believe he used the term "bad apples" in the clubhouse. Then he said the Sox need to clean out the clubhouse and went on to talk a bit about Ortiz--said that he (Ortiz) keeps talking about a deal getting done and questioned why would the Sox want him back? Said that he's had good years in the past but nothing lately.
WTF?!! Disregarding the meaningless percentages they threw out there, I was left wondering if they even follow baseball? Too many big contracts left on the team? Really? Too many malcontents? What a farce of a show.
Yeah, that 25% chance the Sox would make the playoffs next year is a joke. That's like 10x too high! The next intelligent thing Jemelle Hill says will be her first. I don't understand why she is on ESPN or any other sports network.

The story of ESPN's Tebow obsession really begins last year. In September 2011, ESPN2's First Take, having gone through several different lives (a faint imitation of a morning TV show, a debate-cum-variety show), went to an all-debate format starring former newspaper columnist Skip Bayless. This new iteration wasn't all that popular with other producers in Bristol, a source said, but the decision was made after ESPN consulted a focus group.
"We focus-grouped it to people and realized pretty quickly that viewers wanted debate," hot-shot First Take producer Jamie Horowitz told Men's Journal. "In particular, they wanted to see Skip debate."
Producers around the network saw it the same way a lot of us do: as willful crap. Staged disagreement. On the show, Bayless would be pitted against another panelist—often a black counterpart, including Stephen A. Smith, who is now the full-time co-host—and "debate" him or her, Crossfire-style, on the sports topic of the moment. Around the time that Bayless become the country's most visible and outspoken Tebow supporter—which ultimately spawned this abomination and the 4 million clicks that went with it—ratings for the show began to climb.
Sadly, you'll never know.
I refuse to give this a click, but gee, I wonder what the argument is?
Here's your chance to ask w/out having to giver her a "click".

Sitting alongside Chris Berman as he has for so long, Tom Jackson has escaped criticism because the easy target gets hit the most. But Tom Jackson is just as awful and this is but one example. Jay Cutler was concussed two weeks ago and was just named the starter for the Bears today. Rather than a gritty player returning to play an important divisional game narrative we have Tom Jackson going on some insane tangent about how Jay Cutler doesn't say hello to anyone walking into the stadium. "It doesn't mean anything, it's just something."
Shot to cost fan $22K in taxes
With a half-court hook shot, Michael Drysch has gone from an average computer technician in the Midwest to a viral Internet sensation.
The 50-year-old from McHenry, Ill., swished a shot Friday night at the Miami Heat game as part of a promotion with lip balm brand Carmex and the LeBron James Family Foundation. He won $75,000 for himself and the Boys & Girls Club of America.
Drysch got tackled by James after the shot went in, but the government also will tackle his $75,000 prize.
"A lot of people don't realize: You don't win what you win," said Robert Raiola, an accountant with FMRTL in Cranford, N.J., whose clients include athletes.
I thought the exact same thing. When I saw the headline I clicked thinking it was some kind of Oprah-car situation where he was going to end up losing his own money somehow. Nope....exceedingly obvious and boring news.Dollar said:I'm struggling to understand the purpose of this ESPN column by Darren Rovell.

Was this column really necessary? Does the average ESPN reader not realize that Americans pay taxes on their income?
I had a longer post, but this isn't V&N so I deleted it and will just say that there would be alot of people who would be shocked to find out they would have to pay taxes on winnings. While obvious to you, I'm sure there's a sizable ESPN readership that was surprised by Rovell's column.Dollar said:I'm struggling to understand the purpose of this ESPN column by Darren Rovell.

So, while "sizable" is subject to interpretation, I think the education value here is pretty minimal. In fact, if anything, since I think the public perception is similar to Drysch's, the only education here might be that the government doesn't take as much as you think. It's not something Drysch was unaware of. When asked Friday night on NBA TV what he would do with the money, Drysch responded, "Give the government half."

LeoCarrillo said:Good god, can three days pass without a Dwight Howard off-court, meaningless headline on espn.com? Today's must-read: "Howard stays focused, tries to avoid 'circus' ".
For a year and a half now, it's "does Dwight want out of Orlando ... is it Brooklyn ... it's Lakers, but does he wish it was brooklyn ... said this about Van Gundy, didn't say that about Van Gundy, putting Van Gundy affair behind him ..." It's endless.

I turned it off in 3 seconds. I guess ESPN has already moved on to promoting the NBA.
Take, for instance, the fact that two days ago the fourth story down was about Manti Te'o taking an "indefininte leave" from twitter.LeoCarrillo said:And the Lakers, clearly. Another headline today: "Kobe to Ailing Howard: We Need Urgency" atop its news feed. It's not the LA Times, it's ESPN and has every sport everywhere to choose from, yet there are daily non-news stories getting huge play -- not to mention an excess of chatter on the WWL network shows, like First Take -- about the Lakers.

I try my best to stay away, but it is still, unfortunately, one of the better places to get a quick look at up to date scores. I just hate giving them clicks and wish there was someplace better.
