ESPN Is Pathetic

On the drive home today, I was listening to ESPN Radio around 4:30 (forgot the ipod, so was stuck with radio). Jonathan Coachman and Jemal(sp?) Hill were doing some sort of 5 Questions thing, and the question was posed to them: How likely is it that John Farrell leads the Red Sox to the playoffs next year?. Their responses left me incredulous. Hill replied that she thought it was a 25% chance and that Farrell would be thwarted by too many big contracts and too many disgruntled players. Coachman came it at 15% and agreed with her about the contracts and I believe he used the term "bad apples" in the clubhouse. Then he said the Sox need to clean out the clubhouse and went on to talk a bit about Ortiz--said that he (Ortiz) keeps talking about a deal getting done and questioned why would the Sox want him back? Said that he's had good years in the past but nothing lately.

WTF?!! Disregarding the meaningless percentages they threw out there, I was left wondering if they even follow baseball? Too many big contracts left on the team? Really? Too many malcontents? What a farce of a show.

The hosts they've had on in the post-SVP slot lately have done the impossible ... they've almost made me miss Doug Gottlieb

The next intelligent thing Jemelle Hill says will be her first. I don't understand why she is on ESPN or any other sports network.

I don't know what it's like in other markets, but it's not like ESPN radio faces much competition in the NY suburbs - the competition is every bit as idiotic, so there's no logical reason for them to improve when they can get by with crap.

ESPN is the Lakers gimp. Latest NBA Power poll: http://espn.go.com/nba/powerrankings/_/year/2013/week/0

They knock the Thunder for 'chemistry' issues and list them at #5 after the 'uncertainty' of the Harden trade, yet they have the Lakers at #3 with no chemistry issues after going 0-8 in the preseason and 2 brand new starters who have yet to prove they can fit in with Kobe (who might have perpetual injury doubts all year). But no chemistry issues there. I'm sure Kobe will love to stand around and watch Nash dribble out the clock all the time.

Great article on Deadspin today, I think this is the place it best belongs. It focuses on Tebow but branches out to the state of ESPN journalism as a whole.

http://deadspin.com/5929361/how-espn-ditched-journalism-and-followed-skip-bayless-to-the-bottom-a-tim-tebow-story

The story of ESPN's Tebow obsession really begins last year. In September 2011, ESPN2's First Take, having gone through several different lives (a faint imitation of a morning TV show, a debate-cum-variety show), went to an all-debate format starring former newspaper columnist Skip Bayless. This new iteration wasn't all that popular with other producers in Bristol, a source said, but the decision was made after ESPN consulted a focus group.
"We focus-grouped it to people and realized pretty quickly that viewers wanted debate," hot-shot First Take producer Jamie Horowitz told Men's Journal. "In particular, they wanted to see Skip debate."
Producers around the network saw it the same way a lot of us do: as willful crap. Staged disagreement. On the show, Bayless would be pitted against another panelist—often a black counterpart, including Stephen A. Smith, who is now the full-time co-host—and "debate" him or her, Crossfire-style, on the sports topic of the moment. Around the time that Bayless become the country's most visible and outspoken Tebow supporter—which ultimately spawned this abomination and the 4 million clicks that went with it—ratings for the show began to climb.

Not sure if this is the right forum for this but Forbes reports that ESPN is worth $40 billion for Walt Disney. Article here. The article states that "The only media companies in the world worth more than $40 billion are News Corp. ($58 billion) and Comcast ($96 billion)."

Total ESPN revenues from all of ESPN, including the network, magazine and website, are $10.3 billion. I couldn't find any breakdowns on individual revenue streams but a Bloomberg report from Nov 9 states advertising trends for ESPN are weakening so the above valuation will likely decrease.

Media companies are really hard to value, since they don't have many hard assets, their contracts are often relatively short, and a lot of their value is wrapped in their people, which you can't be sure will stay or continue to be popular.

But that's a lot of revenue.

Hey, I have an idea: Let's compare the QB draft class of 2012 with the QB draft class of 1983* and ask...WHICH IS BETTER?

*and 2004!

Old friend Tom Jackson showing us all why he's a prick.

http://deadspin.com/5963074/tom-jackson-bizarrely-attacks-jay-cutler-for-not-saying-hello-to-people

Sitting alongside Chris Berman as he has for so long, Tom Jackson has escaped criticism because the easy target gets hit the most. But Tom Jackson is just as awful and this is but one example. Jay Cutler was concussed two weeks ago and was just named the starter for the Bears today. Rather than a gritty player returning to play an important divisional game narrative we have Tom Jackson going on some insane tangent about how Jay Cutler doesn't say hello to anyone walking into the stadium. "It doesn't mean anything, it's just something."

ESPN policing the chatrooms in regards to the Jovan Belcher murder/suicide.

More comments about mods taking down posts than conversations about the tragic event. Anything remotely critical of their RIP, let's remember the player coverage is removed... almost immediately.

I don't know how anyone can respect an organization that cannot admit their mistake and actively censor their boards...

Opening night of the long delayed and awaited NHL season and it's basically nowhere on ESPN.com's front page. They're not even pretending to care because they don't broadcast the games and their competition does. So transparently pathetic.

They didn't have the NHL as part of the scoreboard up top until after the 3PM games started. But I was able to find out which NCAA women's basketball teams were playing.

I'm struggling to understand the purpose of this ESPN column by Darren Rovell.

http://espn.go.com/nba/story/_/id/8885481/michael-drysch-fan-hit-half-court-shot-pay-22k-taxes

Shot to cost fan $22K in taxes

With a half-court hook shot, Michael Drysch has gone from an average computer technician in the Midwest to a viral Internet sensation.
The 50-year-old from McHenry, Ill., swished a shot Friday night at the Miami Heat game as part of a promotion with lip balm brand Carmex and the LeBron James Family Foundation. He won $75,000 for himself and the Boys & Girls Club of America.

Drysch got tackled by James after the shot went in, but the government also will tackle his $75,000 prize.
"A lot of people don't realize: You don't win what you win," said Robert Raiola, an accountant with FMRTL in Cranford, N.J., whose clients include athletes.

Was this column really necessary?  Does the average ESPN reader not realize that Americans pay taxes on their income?

I thought the exact same thing. When I saw the headline I clicked thinking it was some kind of Oprah-car situation where he was going to end up losing his own money somehow. Nope....exceedingly obvious and boring news.

I had a longer post, but this isn't V&N so I deleted it and will just say that there would be alot of people who would be shocked to find out they would have to pay taxes on winnings. While obvious to you, I'm sure there's a sizable ESPN readership that was surprised by Rovell's column.

While I try to never underestimate the stupidity of the American public, do you really think that's the case? I mean the stories about taxes paid by folks who won game shows, Oprah cars, gambling winnings, etc., are all over the place. I think you'd have to be pretty far under the rock to not know about taxes on winnings.

I mean, it wasn't even news to the guy who won it:
It's not something Drysch was unaware of. When asked Friday night on NBA TV what he would do with the money, Drysch responded, "Give the government half."
So, while "sizable" is subject to interpretation, I think the education value here is pretty minimal. In fact, if anything, since I think the public perception is similar to Drysch's, the only education here might be that the government doesn't take as much as you think.

Don't most state lotteries offer a lump-sum option when playing Powerball-type games?  Most folks I know are familiar with the concept of paying taxes on winnings.

Good god, can three days pass without a Dwight Howard off-court, meaningless headline on espn.com? Today's must-read: "Howard stays focused, tries to avoid 'circus' ".

For a year and a half now, it's "does Dwight want out of Orlando ... is it Brooklyn ... it's Lakers, but does he wish it was brooklyn ... said this about Van Gundy, didn't say that about Van Gundy, putting Van Gundy affair behind him ..." It's endless.

I don't/can't watch Sportscenter anymore, but I was on the treadmill at the gym yesterday watching PTI and after that finished, the first "lead-in" shot of the Sportscenter opening was of Stephen A. interviewing Dwight Howard...the day after the f---ing Super Bowl. I turned it off in 3 seconds. I guess ESPN has already moved on to promoting the NBA.

Hoge actually says, "Flacco, the people around him, you could argue he doesn't have guys like Rodgers does".

Did he watch any of the playoffs??? Rodgers was running for his life. Flacco spent entire quarters untouched by the defense, and his receivers were big, strong and fast. Boldin and Smith had incredible playoffs. What planet does Hoge live on? You swap Flacco for Rodgers or Brady and that team wins the Superbowl by 50...

And the Lakers, clearly. Another headline today: "Kobe to Ailing Howard: We Need Urgency" atop its news feed. It's not the LA Times, it's ESPN and has every sport everywhere to choose from, yet there are daily non-news stories getting huge play -- not to mention an excess of chatter on the WWL network shows, like First Take -- about the Lakers.

Pretty obvious that the Lakers are the linchpin of ratings for any late-game time slot and ESPN is relentlessly hyping the Lakers pseudo soap opera, in lieu of the Lakers actually being a good team, to try and draw eyeballs to the Lakers. Just keep saying the word, "Lakers," and people will tune in to watch the Lakers. Lakers.

The lead story and two of the top three stories right now on ESPN Boston's mobile page are Lakers stories.  You have to go to the Bruins link further down to get to coverage of last night's game.  The people running ESPN Boston really don't understand sports in this city if they think that a B's win over the Canadiens isn't a top story.

Do you think a Bruins game story will get more clicks than a Jackie Mac interview of Kobe about the celtics, rondo, and his friendship with belichick?

The Kobe story was worth putting up front, but no way a story about Gasol's injury should have trumped a B's win over the hated Habs.

Take, for instance, the fact that two days ago the fourth story down was about Manti Te'o taking an "indefininte leave" from twitter.

And the whole world breathed a sigh of relief.

I try my best to stay away, but it is still, unfortunately, one of the better places to get a quick look at up to date scores.  I just hate giving them clicks and wish there was someplace better.

Isn't NBC Sports a big NHL pusher? Holy shit, stop complaining about espn.com and then keep going to them. I hate ESPN, but some of you are right, espn.com is the best sports website there is.

Disclaimer: I haven't watched ESPN in a year, outside of live sporting events.

Yeah, I mean, I love the Bruins, but the NHL is basically the 6th (7th?) most popular sport in the country.  And in America it doesn't create buzz.  Football, Basketball, Baseball, Nascar, Golf, Int'l Soccer -- they're all more popular.  The truth is that nationally, Kobe saying nice things about Rondo is a bigger deal than the B's beating the Habs.

There's no reason to give them clicks when you can easily go to Yahoo, CBS, or any other site that has links to scoreboards on the front page.

I use Yahoo's sports app to get scores and box scores. It's pretty simple-- and it's not ESPN, so even better.
