You're entitled to your opinion, obviously, but I think Meyers is really funny and generally a great guy.

First of all, he's been the head writer of SNL since Tina Fey left, and has risen through the ranks because of his writing, not really his stage stuff (he wrote the Sarah Palin sketches for Tina Fey, the MacGruber sketches, and the "REALLY?!" sketches on Weekend Update for example). I also always thought he did a pretty good job with Weekend Update -- good deadpan delivery.

He's also local (New Hampshire), a huge Sox fan, and donated the $100,000 he won on Bravo Celebrity Poker to the Jimmy Fund.

So.. what I'm saying is, why do you hate the Jimmy Fund?

Hasn't it pretty much been awful since she left?

Check this out

Apparently, Jim Grey was on LeBron's payroll last night, not ESPN's.

Gray was on Dan Patrick's radio show the morning of THE DECISION saying the same thing. Patrick even asked him a couple times if some of the anchors at ESPN took offense to an outside guy doing the interview, but Gray just played dumb.

I thought the most interesting part was when Gray claimed that he pitched this idea to Lebron's handlers during game 2 of the Finals and they all loved it. ESPN and Lebron both tried to act like this was a last minute arrangement but Gray wasn't shy about the fact that it was planned weeks in advance.

I only caught a little bit of the ESPYs but while doing a little searching to see what others thought of it (and to find out if I'd missed anything worthwhile) I stumbled onto Norm Macdonald's opening monologue from 1998 (link in spoilers). It's certainly not the ESPN of today.

I like the ESPY's. I don't care who wins all that much, but the opening montage is always good for a few goosebumps and the monologue is always funny.

Was coming to post that. Might as well try to empty the ocean with a spoon, though. Best part of the article was him writing, "Well, the old ombudsman asked this same question, which apparently still hasn't been answered."

where the darn libs live
ESPN just pulled an article about LBJ partying til the late hours in Vegas.

AtTheHive.com has the story.

James' circle includes Randy Mims, seated to his right at the center of the table, Maverick Carter, seated at the head of the table, and Richard Paul, seated in front of James. The quartet makes up the initials behind LRMR Marketing, the management firm James founded almost four years ago with his buddies.
Seated to the right of James is Chris Paul, whose brother, C.J., is seated across from him. The New Orleans Hornets point guard has seen how James has positioned himself to win a championship by signing with the Miami Heat and joining forces with Dwyane Wade and Chris Bosh and has reportedly considered a similar move himself. The truth is, in James' dream world, the duo he would love to play with for the next decade would be Wade and Paul, his two closest friends in the NBA. Paul has been like a brother to James since the two were in Las Vegas four years ago for USA Basketball training camp, when as a rookie he carried James' and Wade's bags to and from the team bus.
Carter, LeBron's childhood friend and manager, begins dancing around James like Puff Daddy in a Notorious B.I.G video. A giant red crown-shaped cake is brought over to James while go-go dancers dressed in skimpy red and black outfits raise four lettered placards that spell out, "KING." Carter grabs a bottle of Grey Goose and pours a quarter of it on the floor and raises it up before passing it off.
Toward the end of the night, Boston Celtics forward Glen Davis walks past James' party and looks at the scene up and down several times like a painting in a museum, soaking in the images of the go-go dancers, the "King" sign and the costumed man delivering bottles of champagne. Davis shakes his head and walks on.
Here's the full story:

Awful. Either the facts in the story are in question and it shoudlnt have been published, so ESPN should issue a reasonable explanation which would bash the author/editor. Or, they pulled it for team Lebron. If they dont explain why they pulled it, thats poor journalism.
I heard D&H talking about this on the radio this morning. They were saying ESPN released a statement that the article was pulled bc it "had accidentally bypassed the standard editing process". Of course

1)I can't find that statement on ESPN(not sure where to look though)

2)That implies the article could appear again fairly soon.

We will see if #2 happens(I doubt it. Or it could be edited all to heck and back).

The word I have is that the writer did not identify himself as a writer during all (some?) of his travels with LBJ and party, and if that is true, or if that's the company line, then I'd not be surprised if this story never officially sees the light of day. ESPN can cover themselves with some appropriateness if this is the line they take.

But the story is out, and that's the interesting stuff.

If that's really the excuse, than that is the ultimate weak sauce. How did he get to hang out with James and his entourage then?

"Hey, my name is Steve and I'm a regular person--not a writer at all. Can I hang out you guys?"
"Sure. My name is LeBron, these are my friends. Have a drink with us -- you get the first round!"
"Cool!"

To be fair, the name "Steve" carries instant street cred. "Arash" on the other hand...

Seems like the guy is some sort of espn santioned celebrity blogger.

He ends his blog with this.

I'll be back later with some more updates from my stay in Vegas. Well, as much of it as I can remember and won't interfere with me being gainfully employed when I return.
If he actually did misrepresent him self...he does deserve to be fired; but any journalist of any experience what so ever would know better than that.

Eh I rather think this is typical ESPN chickenshittery along the lines of their hushing of Rob Neyer outing Mike Mussina as the Bronx Bigot.

Well, this is strange. When I try to go to ESPN.com, for some reason I get re-directed to the Houston Texans home page. Haven't decided if that's an upgrade or not.

I think it's just you. Get yourself an MBAM scan.
Scan came up clean, so it wasn't that. It only lasted for maybe 5 minutes, but I tried about a dozen times and got the Texans home page each time. If I had to guess, I'd say a Texans fan was having a little fun at ESPN's expense. I'm not really the person to ask how the internet work though.

Plagiarize much?

Opening section from a Doug Gottlieb column:

The "elephant in the room" is an English idiom for an obvious truth that is being ignored or goes unaddressed.

There are plenty of those in the sport of college basketball. It's a sport where people love to talk, chatter and even "hate" on each other privately, but rarely do those hard truths get discussed publicly in what is in many ways still a good ol' boys club.
Opening section from Wikipedia article on "Elephant in the room":

"Elephant in the room" is an English idiom for an obvious truth that is being ignored or goes unaddressed. The idiomatic expression also applies to an obvious problem or risk no one wants to discuss.[1]

It is based on the idea that an elephant in a room would be impossible to overlook; thus, people in the room who pretend the elephant is not there have made a choice. They are choosing to concern themselves with tangential or small and irrelevant issues rather than deal with the looming big one.

For a research paper, you'd have to cite it like any other reference, but for a journalism piece, I'm not 100% sure you need to attribute a dictionary or encyclopedia reference. Can't find anything online to confirm or deny that, though (all references I see are MLA or APA format instructions).

On ESPN.com, I have video autoplay set to off but the videos still play automatically - happening to anyone else? And since almost every story has a video, it's driving me nuts.

Me too. It's amazing that my first click to anything sports related 5 years ago was ESPN.com. Now, I never go to ESPN.com because of the videos never stopping.(i like Yahoo and CBS Sportsline) You should have to opt into videos, not opt out of them. As well, opting out doesn't even work.

You should also be able to just mute the videos. They'll still load and play but should stay muted until you unmute. Not perfect but lets you watch a video if you want to.

Just for clarity, the Firefox add-on I linked to earlier doesn't block one from viewing the video at all, just prevents it from automatically loading. What you get is something that looks like this:

If you want to view a video, you can simply click on the box and the video appears and can be played.

Ah OK, that's pretty cool. Better, too, because it really sucks when I watch a video, forget to re-mute, then get the crap scared out of me next time when some anchor suddenly starts yelling at me.

This is about ESPN Radio, but whatever....Colin Cowherd said Lamar Odom is pretty much a no-doubt Hall of Famer.

Then he compared him to Mike Mussina, saying, and I quote, "Hey Mussina won lots of games with a great Yankee team behind him, and he has a few rings just like Odom."

What years did he win those rings Colin?

Oh, and Lamar is a HOF'er, but Ray Allen, "Ehhh, maybe."

Today Deadspin did a piece on my old boss at CBS Sports, Len DeLuca. It's about how he was quietly let go from his position of VP of Programming at Espn after he was caught fucking a co-worker in his office.

Couldn't have happened to a nicer guy. This fucker tormented me and every other male who held an entry level position when he was at CBS. The office was littered with young hot chicks and amazingly enough he treated them very quite differently. I almost punched the cocksucker one day after he screamed at me in front of about ten people for some mistake that had nothing to do with me. I hope he shoots himself. That is all.
