I had the idea of starting a survivor pool for the upcoming Premier League season. It seems like there might be sufficient interest to do one. I had one idea about how I wanted to run it, and a member here suggested the possibility of using a website to manage the pool. It looks like the website no longer offers that option, however -- so Ill need to manage it myself. I'll see if I can figure out a website to administer it, but it may have to start as an email process if I don't. I think that there are a few different ways to do the pool, so I'd like to get some feedback about what you all would like best. This just a broad outline of the possibilities, and we can fine-tune rules once we make a collective choice.

Basic Rules:
A) Pick a team each week to win or draw. Teams can be picked only one time in each half of the season (that is, surviving entries have 20 teams to choose from following the first 19 games) and there is only one pool for the season.
B) Pick a team each week to win or draw. Teams can only be picked one time in each half of the season, but we run separate pools for the "Hinrunde" and "Rückrunde".
C) Pick a team each week to win or draw. Teams may be picked twice per season. There is only one pool for the whole season.

Mulligan:
A) Allow a player to buy back in following an elimination in week 1 or week 2.
B) Do not allow a player to buy back in following an elimination.

Entry Fee:
A) $20
B) $50
C) $100

Winnings:
A) Winner take all
B) 70%/20%/10% for first, second and third

I guess I can't make multiple polls, so please add your thoughts regarding mulligans, entry fees and winner split.

Rules: C
Mulligan: B
Fee: A
Winnings: A (but not by a huge margin assuming there's decent number of entrants)

I am not capable of keeping up with Fantasy but I love this idea. I don’t care about the rules but if this happens please PM me I’m in

Interested.

C
B
A
A with a smaller number of entrants, B with a bigger number. Not sure where the threshold is.

OK I'm going to start this up. We will do one pool for the season. You can pick each team up to two times, regardless of which half of the season it is. Your selected team has to win or draw, or you are eliminated. There are no mulligans--lose and you're done. The entry fee is $20. I doubt that we will have 50 or more players for the first season, so it will be winner take all. If somehow we have 50 or more, it will be 70/20/10 for 1st / 2nd / 3rd places. Picks are due before the first kickoff of the week to survivetheepl@gmail.com. It's possible I'll get a website running for this, but don't count on it. Please, please feel free to share this with friends, enemies, coworkers, acquaintances, people who don't know anything about soccer, etc. The more the merrier...I think this will be quite the gauntlet to run.

I think that the rules seem pretty simple, but if you have any questions, please post them here and I'll try to address them in case anyone else has the same concern. I'll send out an email with everyone's picks as soon as I'm able on Friday/Saturday as games start. If a team has multiple games in a game week (I'll defer to the EPL Fantasy website to determine this, only one pick is required). Not sure what to do if you're out of teams to pick if/when that day comes. Thoughts? We can still alter the rules up until the first kickoff, since I didn't think of that possibility until literally right this second. Seems kind of unlikely, but it is theoretically possible I suppose.

Entry fees to jkempa@yahoo.com through PayPal friends and family please.

Seems like the easiest thing to do would be to create a Google sheet showing all the picks and share it with all the entrants

What would happen if game gets postponed after the deadline?
Are you thinking like a Covid-type postponement (or Man U/Liverpool Super League protest)? We should know (I hope) in enough time to make an adjustment, but I'm not sure what to do if this actually happens. Maybe the player has to double up the following week?

Either or, just seen a few lately with the pitch conditions with the flooding and Covid and the protests. I wouldn't expect to be likely but if it happens it would be worth having it documented ahead of time. Double up the next week makes sense for sure, just thinking of stuff that has happened in other survivor pools I've been a part of.

As a potential tiebreaker (in NFL pools if you get to a certain week you have to pick 2 teams), although I doubt anyone's going to last all season---maybe the last few weeks it's win only and no draws?

It seems insane someone is going to run the table though.

If anyone needs to use me as a middleman if they use Venmo instead let me know, I do it a lot for the poker group.

Lots of leagues I've been in you get one mistake, if you're late once you are given the common pick from everyone else. The second time you're out. I don't mind that method.

This seems like a good policy.

Life is hectic, shit happens. We also probably won't have a huge number of entrants so that's more reason to try to avoid disqualifying people for missing one pick.

This makes sense, but what if the common pick is a team you've already used twice? Seems unfair that someone should get a third bite at the top teams because they screwed up and didn't get their pick in.

I'd bump it to the 2nd most common team in that case if a clear one exists? Not sure after that.

Gotta email to survivetheepl@gmail.com right? You can't post on google sheet and see who everyone else picks---that's an unfair advantage.
Yeah I’ll do it this way, for this reason, until/if I can figure out a good way of doing it without people going to school in their opponents. I can publish the picks on a Google sheet afterwards.

FYI - we are at 8 paid entries so far, so definitely feel free to share it around. I just put in on my FB page too and tagged the handful of people who might be interested.

What do you guys think?

Also, for my job as administrator...I don't want to open the picks ahead of time to give myself an unfair advantage, but do want to make sure that people have their picks in. Is there some way to set up gmail so I don't see your picks until I actually open the email?

Just paid.

If you email your pick to the dedicated email address like everyone else, then it's fine. You don't have to go to the email account and look at everyone's picks until after kickoff of the first game, at which point everyone's locked in.

Thanks for doing this, I'm glad to have the chance to blow yet more money .

Paid. Looks good to me. I'd maybe revise/update the first post of the thread with the rules, email address, papyal info, etc. so that's all in one easy to find place.

One other thing guys...when you pay, please don't mention the pool or anything suggesting gambling.

Oh and remember - Friday game this week!

I think he was saying that if someone forgot to send their pick in, he wouldn't know. He wanted a way to shut down the little gmail preview that, in this case, would likely show the pick.

Brief update/housekeeping items. We are at only 16 entries so far. I think that I'm going to allow entries this week until Saturday. Of course, late entrants wouldn't be allowed to pick the Brentford-Arsenal match tomorrow, but I don't want to close the pool to potential latecomers. I don't see this as disadvantaging anyone in the pool already. But I will send out everyone's picks on Saturday as result. I have sent mine to the gmail address I'm using for the pool. It's not tomorrow's game.

Whoever invited Emmet...please let him know that I sent a couple of emails to him about his entry. He had a mistake on his entry and also needs to resend his fee as "friends and family". Just want to make sure he's covered.

Hopefully we can get a few more people in. Would be nice to get to 25 and at least make it for $500. I've asked pretty much everyone I know who'd possibly want to do it.

What's your take on switching picks? Or are we locked in once we send?

You can switch up until kickoff of the first game. And since I'm allowing picks until the first game tomorrow, you have until then. Obviously, Brentford-Arsenal is not an option if you wait until then.

I'll post my pick shortly just for full disclosure and send everyone else's picks tomorrow.

I'm all for the letting late comers get in before tomorrow idea. I think it makes sense.

Just for full disclosure everyone (and I tried doing this a little earlier but couldn't get in), I picked Everton. I have an email to myself if anyone needs to see it.
