I'm not involved, but I don't see why you have to make your pick before any games start. If you forget until right before the last game of the week and your only option is to take Newcastle over City, why not let the person do it?

It’s mostly administrative and partly a fairness issue. The players do want to see who everyone picked, and that can’t be shared until all picks are in. But then there is also the question of people getting more time to react to things like injuries. And while I agree with you about getting cornered by having only one game to pick, it seems like players should have to evaluate all the games - especially in a week like this when there are few appealing choices. And also because players are limited by the number of times they can pick a team, I don’t want someone to end up without anyone to pick by delaying.

But it’s mostly the administration.

If you've made your call with that dude, can you tell us who the picks were?

Yeah I can see it as a matter of principle because running these things blows. From a competitive standpoint I don’t care at all if someone picks a match that hasn’t been played but it’s fair for the person running the league to have a deadline just to make management less of a pain

Yeah, I've done NFL ones where you can pick any game that hasn't started yet, but it was run on the web and nobody had to keep track.

I send a link to you guys every week with the picks.
I know you do---I checked it a little while ago and I didn't see week 6, so thought you were waiting until that situation got resolved.

All good, just wanted to see.

John Dolan is playing chess while the rest of us play checkers don’t know who that is but a really impressive navigation of the early season

And yet, with that Wolves goal, he needs a Southampton goal in next 30 minutes or he’s out.

Another fun week. I really don't want to lock a team out going forward, but...

Ouch, that one must have hurt. Well, at least I don’t have to worry about Emmet’s late picks anymore.

People need to not be betting against Brentford

Edit: This is gonna be another tough week. Betting on road teams is always sketchy

Norwich looking alive so far.

On one hand, that’s always how they look before getting punched in the face, but I’d still be wary right now if I picked Brighton.

Take note everyone that there is a Friday game this week, so please have your picks in by tomorrow (Friday) afternoon. Thanks!

There's a seeming obvious choice this week, its whether you want to burn that team or not.

Also, have we had a discussion of how things will work after Christmas when matches get postponed and some teams don't plan in a game week and some teams play twice in a game week? It would seem that the easiest solution would be to keep the game weeks as listed regardless of when matches are actually played. So, for example, suppose you pick Man City in GW 21, but the match is moved to GW 30. You would be allowed to continue for future weeks, but if City loses the original GW 21 match in GW 30 then you were eliminated in GW 21.

Adjusting the game weeks as fixtures are changed could lead to a situation where someone has no possible choices because there isn't a full set of fixtures in a game week and all the teams playing have been used up. Also, how do you pick a team that plays twice, do you have to survive both matches?

Can’t imagine keeping someone in the pool until the match week is played later. The strategy changes based on who is available. I think we’d have to repick as it’s probably impossible to have used all potential choices for a match week this early?

I think the simplest thing is to limit the choices to teams that are actually playing on the assigned match date. If the Man City-Villa match (or whatever) gets postponed, you can't pick City or Villa for that week.

Its impossible to be in the situation where you've used up all your choices until the last few weeks of the season. And my suspicion is that we won't get anywhere close to the end of the season before declaring a winner.

Here are the relevant rules regarding postponed games. Happy to hear any feedback on this before we get there, in case some adjustments need to be made. But I think we discussed this up front and did as good a job planning for complications as possible.

@swiftaw you still have a couple hours, but yours is the last pick outstanding for the week.

Surprisingly, you're the only one who took it! I probably should have myself since I haven't used Chelsea yet, but Palace was the hot pick this week (or probably more accurately, against Newcastle).

After my scare last week, I needed an easy week.

Feeling bad about my Brentford pick honestly. Went "first thought, best thought" there and most of my thoughts about it afterwards have been that I was hasty in picking an away team that's not that good in a not that good run of form.

Yeah, Burnley can sometimes be a tough place to go.

Goddammit, at least the commentators are helpfully reminding me how many PL and leads Burnley have thrown away this season (all of them).

I think after today we could technically have a winner tomorrow if Arsenal were to lose.

I know you asked via email but if I could change anything it would be to have some type of 3 strikes and you’re out draw system. There needs to be some bonus for having picked winners instead of teams who draw. Maybe 3 is too few but that’s the primary change I’d make. Or maybe if a team draws you can’t use them a 2nd time which would be evil and fun

Or just go straight wins.

Or a second draw eliminates you.

This would be a very short competition. I agree that it seems a little off to accept draws, but maybe if you think about it as coming away with point(s) is more mentally satisfying? This already seems tougher than a typical NFL survivor pool, and I’m afraid it would be over very quick.

Fortunately (for me at least) Arsenal did win.

In principle, I kind of like the idea of a draw making a team ineligible for a second pick. What would happen if I picked a team once already and they won, and I picked them a scone time end they drew? Would that be ok? What about the reverse?

The other possible issue is picking a team, and surviving by draw (making them ineligible for a second pick) could theoretically leave a player without any eligible picks late in the season. What would you do then?

Well maybe that’s the actual penalty for draws — eventually if you’ve survived by a bunch of draws and have no selections left then you’re out. It’s a bit cruel but I’m not sure how likely it is to happen and it’s at least an interesting wrinkle and makes taking a big team away far more risky
