Down 4 with 9 seconds left. Foul, best case Michigan misses both, have to score quickly. Maybe get a 3 with 2-3 seconds left. Still down 1 and needing to foul again. The odds are Fla. State is losing that game no matter what.

Percentage of the time Florida St. loses when they don't foul = 100%

Percentage of time Florida St. loses when they foul < 100%

It's really as simple as that.

Sure, they're probably going to lose regardless of whether or not they foul. But they gave up all hope when there was no reason to. Maybe Michigan misses both free throws, Florida St. nails a quick three, and then Michigan throws away the in-bounds pass. Crazier things have happened.

They also fouled down 3 with about 40 seconds left.

I would be too. You've just come back from some.emotional moments with your team after a tough loss and a reporter wants to grill you about some last minute strategy that very likely had no bearing on the outcome of the game. I thought he actually handled it pretty well.
Really? I thought he handled it terribly.

First, he pretended he didn't know what she was asking about. When it was obvious to anyone who watched the game exactly what she was asking about. So he starts off looking like an idiot.

Then he dismissed her question as being ridiculous, when it's a very legitimate question. So, now he looks like an asshole. If you don't want to get grilled by the media, don't do stupid shit.

He could have handled it much better. Like, just say "we gave up," because that would be the honest answer. And if he wants to cover for his kids (you can see an assistant coach imploring them to foul, yet they didn't), just say you screwed up and should have fouled. "We probably lose anyway but you're right, I should've coached that situation better," would have sufficied.

Shitting on the reporter for asking the question everyone wanted to ask him is a bad look.

Of course the odds are they lose but that’s not the point. The Celtics game back from 5 down with 15 seconds left earlier this week. Crazy stuff happens in basketball. If FSU fouls and Mich misses a FT or 2, FSU would have had a chance to go down and hit a 3 to cut to a 1 possession game.

Inbounds mistakes happen all the time. Maybe they commit an offensive foul like Harden did against Celtics. Maybe they throw the ball away. Michigan is only here because they were able to hit a game winning 3 with only 3.5 seconds left. FSU could have had a similar chance at a semi-miracle.

I understand that he didn’t feel like answering the question but it absolutely was a mistake.

I would have preferred the truth......

"Listen! Do you know how many of our alumni who pay good money to me and my recruits had the Seminoles +4 1/2 tonight? Do you realize the money at stake here? C'mon, you need to recognize game situation and play until the end. Our kids did a great job getting inside the number even if a few of our guys got greedy and played the money line. I mean I get it, +175 is sooooooo much more enticing than even money with the 10% juice but you need discipline at this time of the year. Next question?"

I don’t understand why everyone thinks Duke will beat Kansas

Duke is a 3 point favorite. So it's not like saying Duke should win is some crazy statement. And the fact that Kansas is a 1 seed is irrelevant, but you know that already. Loyola was an 11 seed. Michigan was a 3 seed.

I guess the part I appreciated was that he changed the focus from one final play to how well Michigan played, something the reporter's tack completely missed.

No it’s the NCAA wanting all the courts to look the same.
Ah. Makes sense.

I saw a graphic on the bottom of a screen last week saying some of the Sweet 16 games were being played in East Boston. I have never seen the Garden location as East Boston, or “East-a Bost”.

Refs seem infatuated with mid major Villanova taking on a power 5 team

This is the same situation as yesterday but a closer game. If you’re Texas Tech do you shorten the game right now and make Villanova shoot three one and ones or is six and their ball too close and you just play

Edit: Now I foul fast

Despite some of the bad shots on both sides, that was a very entertaining half of basketball. Much appreciated after the shitshow that was Nova-TT.

Are they running commercials with every 90 seconds of play? This is ridiculous
How many time outs do they get a game? 4 each or 5 each. There are only 3 combined left, so they either took 5 or they took 7. In additon to the 4 "tv" timeouts each half.
