NFL is a sport where 270 lb behemoths can sprint a 40 in 4.5 seconds.

Everybody is on some kind of PED (legal or otherwise). The false righteousness of people regarding this issue confounds me.
After everything that has happened on this topic over the past 20 years, it is literally confounding when people get self righteous about PEDs.

I've said this 50 times and I'll say it again. When the opportunity for these guys is to make tens of millions of dollars a year, they will do whatever it takes. There are ways to beat tests. There are ways to prepare for test. And all of them know how to do this.

It is either the unfortunate, or stupid, who get caught. As CaptainCoop said.

I agree. Watch Bigger, Faster, Stronger sometime. It’s a good documentary. Basically, steroids were legal and rampant till the Soviets started crushing us at the Olympics because they had better labs so then we vilified and outlawed them. A proper cycle is much better and healthier than alcohol or tobacco. Who cares?
That doc is really incredible! I will also recommend people watch it.

I need to check out Prescription Thugs, too.

It’s kind of funny to see what’s become of Mark “Smelly” Bell, the powerlifter who tries to quit the sauce and loses his gainz. He invented a product called the Slingshot and became a multimillionaire with his own line.

Where would you slot in things like Andro? I remember reading up on it when McGwuire was "busted" for it and thinking it sounded like... really reasonable.

And then they made it illegal because baseball.

Prohormones were banned before I was even old enough to take them so I’m not too sure how or if they worked. I’m pretty positive the ol’ bottle of andro in the locker was a distraction though.

The funny thing about steroids is that some people are just “better” at taking them. Like, some people’s bodies react much better than others. I guess that’s logical and intuitive but I didn’t know until someone specifically told me.

Really? When it comes from non-Pats fans and is in response to a Pats gotcha moment, I assume it’s naïveté or opportunism, and am therefor not confounded by, bothered by or interested in whatever I’m hearing.

Joe Thomas has been retired like four months and looks 60 pounds lighter. Maybe it was a juice cleanse....

Indeed. Nothing to see here, more brain damage for everyone!

Long since gave up on this disgusting and violent sport that leaves most of its long-time participants cripples/in the ground early....

These guys were recently on Rogan touting the carnivore diet. They are strange guys. Bigger Stronger Faster is well done. Rogan had Conte on a few years ago, it was great.

As you seem to be getting at, like so many other things in life, it's not a black and white situation. Sure, maybe there's the potential for Andro and other substances, when properly administered, to enhance physical well being and improve overall quality-of-life. Sounds great, right? But you also need to consider that it could- and probably would- muddy the waters when comparing HR totals between two hitters of different eras. So now all of a sudden there's a very real potential downside accompanying the potential upside. There is no easy answer.

I'm not arguing that it's right, or even okay . But everyone in the NFL uses PEDs. The dumb or really unlucky ones get caught.

I can't fully explain why it bothers me in baseball and not as much in football, but that is the case. Maybe because I enjoy the history of baseball and the PED guys ruined all the records .
I get what you're saying. I can't quite put my finger on it either, but I think some of my NFL PED shoulder-shrugging comes from the same place in my brain that still compels me to watch a fair amount of football (though not as much as 10 years ago) despite a whole bunch of reasons that should make me turn away completely.
As you mentioned, football doesn't have the kind of counting stats that come from sheer power, like baseball. So PEDs dont have the same distorting effect on the record book. Footballs players also wear so much padding/equipment that they don't look freakishly big. By contrast, you can see the physical changes to a baseball player from one season to the next (along with the changes in performance) and it is disconcerting.

In simpler terms: watching Lenny Dykstra morph from a 150 lb. slap hitter to a 235 lb. power hitter in the span of two seasons with the Phillies creates a visual/emotional impact you don't get in football.

I'm just bummed he got caught. Hope it doesn't affect his recovery or performance on the field.

If people don't give a shit that Manning took PED's, I assume we can all agree it doesn't matter that a position player did.

Since when has MDMA been shown to improve performance anyway?

I dance better on it. Does that count?
You haven't lived life until you've candy-flipped. At least that's what my burger buddy friend told me.

Nothing to see here with this. If that number isn't 100% it is close to it. I don't care at all. Didn't care about the Forehead and don't care about Jules. Well, I care that he got caught. Don't get caught next time. Also, thanks for the movie recommendation. Can't wait to watch.

Didn’t some USOC idiot try to make the argument that weed could be a performance-enhancer when some snowboarder tested positive at the Olympics many years back?

Edit: on second thought, maybe that wasn’t so dumb. Could be just what those ADHD-addled types need to dial it in on the half-pipe...

I don’t understand anything about your first paragraph. I am intrigued though.

Candy flipped = LSD & X at the same time. No fucking idea about the burger buddy bit.
Burger buddy is Jules. I was just joking that Jules took it to the next level and one-upped Welker by adding another weight to the bar so to speak.

IIRC, it was more about what to do with a snowboarder who tested positive for weed after medaling and claimed that he had been at a party where people were smoking but hadn't smoked himself.

They decided to accept that explanation even though everyone decided it was bullshit because, at least the conventional belief was, disqualifying a snowboarder for smoking weed would have been... silly.

PEDelman is obvious, but awesome.
Shit--I didn't even notice that at first! That's the kind of shit they write in pre-headlines at newspapers just because they hope it will happen.

Damn. Even I’m a bit scared of acid.
Acid comes in so many forms and levels of purity it's a class of drug. Back in the 70's I never saw blotter shit that was anything but raw crap that was rarely fun and burned the back of your skull. OTOH there was a Greek monk in a room every Sat night in the old Club Baths in the East Village who sold lime green jello windowpane that was a smooth wonderland of magical trips....

Elaborate please.

And is Ordway concocting a they’re-out-to-get-us/Bill’s-guys-don’t-do-bad-stuff conspiracy on this? Or does Jerry Thornton have an exclusive license agreement on framing every issue that way?

Basically how the system is unfair. You can smoke cocaine 5 times be arrested and everything and still not be suspended but make a mistake with an ingredient at GNC and be suspended.

How the league claws back the bonus money too.

But mostly what marbleheader said about the supplement industry being unregulated. You can make one in your basement, have an asterisk on the packaging that statements are not governed by the FDA and say anything you want.

Like I said and someone more experienced in the industry went into in the Cano thread, this junk in supplements argument is a canard at this point.

Yeah. Shrooms are my jam. Took forever to find a connect in NYC though. Everything else comes to your door in under 30.
I don't know if I'd be down for shrooms in NYC. Vermont was more my speed. lol.

Prohormones work, but you have to take a lot and the really good ones can have nasty side effects.

Just like recreational drug prohibition, it's had the unintended consequence of other, more dangerous, substances pop up than would have happened if people could just take T. Hey let's methyl-ate this compound so it's like the real thing, but is slightly different. It'll work, but your liver will be shot!

Not even remotely the same thing.

Different causal variables.
I'm less concerned about the causal and more concerned about the mediating and moderating variables lying between ingestion and end state.

Then you haven't even imagined inputs like "smell."

A little more context from Schefter:
“Most people don’t win appeals, but he’s going to go in and argue whatever he’s going to argue, and we’ll see, because the system is not infallible,’’ said Schefter. “But you have a guy that had had, as I was told, hundreds of tests and never tested positive before. In this particular case, the test came back positive. Right now, it’s four games unless he can present compelling evidence otherwise.’’

Schefter described it as a “very closely guarded piece of information” and said some of the sources he initially reached out to were surprised by the news.

He said Edelman’s positive test was a recent development, perhaps in the last month.

“I don’t think this is something that happened late last season [or] early this offseason,’’ Schefter said.

Interesting re the "recent development". Bert Breer was on the radio this morning and he said that he was told the failed test came in March. He also said that in the offseason the appeals process is much slower
