Totally agree but preemptively complaining about national criticism about a team that is (one of) the national media darling is...tiring.

People will talk about the missed call briefly and they'll move on very quickly. The story is going to be 100X more focused on the Caps choking.

Crosby and Sheary are back at Penguins practice. Guess the protocol doesn't exist anymore?

Washington is in meltdown mode and apparently dropped Ovechkin down to the 3rd line.

If they can't win it this year with Letang out, Crosby banged up, and Murray out, then they should just blow the fucking team up and start again. What a disaster for them.

This is kind of it for them anyways. Oshie, Williams, Winnik, Shattenkirk and Alzner are all UFA's. Kuznetsov, Burakovsky, Orlov and Schmidt are RFA's. Win or lose they appear to have to make significant changes this offseason. Feels like a last hurrah for the current group.

It's hard to believe Ovi has never been past the 2nd round of the playoffs, especially considering how great his teams have been. President Cups all over the place, and then miserable fade outs. I love it.

I remember there was an Ovi underachieving thread a few years ago and it's only gotten worse for him since then.

Underachieving? Are you shitting me? Dude has a 558-477-1035 in 921 games through his age 31 season. How about a Calder, an Art Ross, 3 Harts, 3 Lindsay/Pearsons, and 6 Richard trophies. Underachieved, GTFO...dude is a top 25 all time player.

Except in the playoffs, when he's a dumpster fire and disappears for long stretches. I understand your point, but he has been underachieving in the playoffs his whole career.

It was more of a "The Team Underachieves In The Playoffs" thread, not an Ovi underachieves thread. But they go hand in hand. He's a stud, one of the best players in the game, but the reality is he's never taken a number of top regular season teams to the 3rd round. It could be a total fluke but it's fun to mock him about it.

That's good because he had possession and control of the puck. But Marchand had an exact same one waved off this year. Because NHL.

and that's why I don't want to hear a peep from NBCSN or any of the hockey media about Bonino.

The Penguins don't have Letang, who drives their entire transition game from the back end, Murray, who won the Cup last year with brilliance (although MAF has been out of his mind), and the best player in the game. Add into that Hornqvist has been hurt blocking shots in two games and Hagelin looks like he's at maybe 75%.

They should have swept Pittsburgh and scored 5 goals each game. It's on them, not the officials and not Bonino.
I think the series is 3-1 because the Penguins have been the better team. One will never be able to determine how it would have been different had the Penguins been awarded a PP and scored.

I think what Bonino did the other night would have been rightly exposed on MSNBC and any of the hockey media because what he did was blatantly dishonest. To suggest that the Pens are ahead in this series and current game is nonsense. That nonsense is only superseded by your suggestion that everyone should give Bonino a pass for that act because his team decimated by injury.

Capitals show some life and win, forcing a game 6.

Would love to see a game 7 if for no other reason than to see how Fleury reacts to the pressure, he'll either stand on his head or shit his pants..............either way, it will be fun....................I don't care what anyone says, there is nothing like NHL playoff hockey. I'm a casual hockey fan (can someone explain goalie interference in 10,000 words or less), but I watch just about every game................

Ok, first things first. You can't explain goalie interference. It's impossible, even with 48 million words.

Second, you watch every game. You're not a casual fan. :) You're in the game!

Maybe it's just me but the criticism of guys for flinching to sticks swung at high speed inches from their faces is stupid. The high-sticking penalty is meant to deter the exact behavior exhibited in both of the "controversial" situations in the PIT-WAS series, particularly the one where Oshie got hit, tbh. Don't flail your stick at head level if you don't want to get a high-sticking penalty.

I agree to a point, but if you keep your stick away from people's faces that scenario will never play out. Even if Bonino pulls a Rivaldo and rolls around clutching his head, if Oshie's stick isn't up there to begin with there's no way he's getting a penalty.

I have an issue with calling a penalty that is by definition not a penalty just because it might be a penalty if a couple different things happen.

So tonight it's do or die for the Capitals and based in their piss poor playoff history, I'll go with die.

Would love to see a game 7 if for no other reason than to see which Fleury shows up; the one who stands on his head and stones the Capitals or the one who skates around like an escaped mental patient after every soft goal he lets in.

Sid the Kid and Fatso Phil in the finals again; please spare me Capitals, sack up and take them to a game 7........................

Ugh, another very hard hit to the head for Crosby. I hope this guy's brain isn't fried, I don't buy at all that he's OK considering his history.

Hainsey just made one of the worst plays I've ever seen an NHL defenseman make.

The entire right wing open ahead of him, he decides to eat the puck and create a two-on-one once Burakovsky dispossesses him.

It's more the grabbing of the face that most of us are taking umbrage with.
What I learned later was that Oshie apparently did the same thing last year in the playoffs that earned Bonino a penalty. So there is some sort of justice in the universe.

Still a shithead move. I would have gone to the grave not pretending I was hit in the face before I faked the way Bonino (and Oshie last year) did. Oh well.

This is a rout.

Gotta get Fleury out of there. Not on him tonight by any stretch but he's shown an implosion tendency in his younger days

Given the history between these teams going back to the 1980s, this is feeling similar to Game 6 in Yankee Stadium in October 2004.

Fleury didn't literally shit his pants tonight as the Capitals had numerous odd man rushes and that first goal was pin point passing perfection, but that second goal short side was pretty shaky, followed by glove side high, glove side high, glove side high.

Momentum in sports is a funny thing, I've seen this movie before.

If nothing else, game 7 will be interesting.

And I love Doc Emrick, but his comment about the Penguins and their traditional gold and black uniforms? The same "traditional" uniform colors they stole from the Bruins to try to get some positive mojo going since the Steelers and Pirates wore the same colors and had won multiple WS and SB titles in the 1970's......................get you facts strait Doc.....................their traditional colors were teal and black, not gold and black.

Powder blue, but I'm nitpicking.
I love that sweater, they should go back to it. I saw some wrecking ball wearing a Malkin throwback sweater at a restaurant in Gettysburg last month, was going to comment on how nice it looked but was afraid he'd eat me........................

Yeah I was talking more in the general sense of when people milk a faux high sticking call.

So back to Crosby and the concussion protocol. Apparently the independent spotters were unable to remove Crosby from the game because....his head hit the boards lol. Apparently the way the protocol is written, they can only remove someone after head contact from another player or head hitting the ice. It seems head hitting the boards was not deemed a mechanism for injury.

This friggin league.

Steve Kouleas and Mike Johnson were pretty apoplectic about it on the NHL's satellite radio station. Johnson started to wonder out loud if anyone had ever been concussed by the boards, and I wanted to scream "PATRICE BERGERON, YOU DUMB FUCKS".
