Exactly. Pitching in the Big 12(or SEC/Pac 12, etc) is the equivalent of pitching in A ball so we already had a good idea he'd dominate there. He should have started in Greenville or Salem then if he was good enough(which he is) then put him up at Portland to see how he fared. If he continues what he's been doing at Portland, then maybe just maybe DD might consider him in the big leagues this year. It doesn't appear that the bullpen can be upgraded significantly outside of the organization so Durbin might be that guy ala Brandon Finnegan. There's 18 games left in Portland's season so not much time left to get up there.
Yeah! How is it the Red Sox don't know this!?!?

18 games is plenty of time to get him in a few if they wanted to.
There's more to playing pro ball than what's on the field. no harm in letting him deal with that.

Feltman pitched one more inning last night, giving up 1 hit and recording 1 strikeout. Best of all, he got his first win as a professional. ERA now is 1.17.

What is the sense here as to whether he can actually be a contributor this year in the playoffs? Vanishingly small odds?

It would take a string of injuries unprecedented in the history of MLB. If the team had any inkling of a notion that he might be a contributor to the big league club in 2018, they would have at the very least skipped him up another level by now. It's not happening.

A rough outing for our Mighty Morphin.

1 inning
2 hits
2 earned runs
2 home runs
1 hit batsman
2 strikeouts

ERA now stands at 3.12 with a WHIP of 1.27 after 8.2 innings in Salem.

He's not being challenged in A ball and is getting bored. Like a smart kid understimulated by regular classes in school.
That is one possible answer.

Of about an infinite number of different possibilities.

He gave up two runs. It happens. It was to a decent team who has already seen him twice before this month.

These are the types of experiences I want him to have. You can't get better if you don't know what ails you.

He might not be called up, but he continues to pitch well. In his last game, he went 1.2 innings. He let up no runs but it was tight. He gave up 2 hits and 2 walks. But he also had 4 strikeouts. ERA is now 2.38.

In 11.1 innings in Salem, he has 14 strikeouts, 12 hits, 3 runs, and 4 walks total.

He had major control issues, 31 walks in 51 IP, in AA in 2019. Although the odd walk doesn't mean much to a short reliever (also not sure if they subtract out IBBs) and that's not a huge sample size. K/9 was just over 9. And maybe he tightened things up in the 2020 non-season season. Also 8 HR in those innings and 42 hits -- more SSS that's hard to read and probably acceptable for a kid's first taste of AA, but showing some control issues.
