Wait... we traded a 2015 5th round pick for a 2016 5th round pick, that might be a worse pick, AND we have to wait another year for it?

Don Sweeney definitely doesn't get value in this trade. IN 95% of other draft pick trades if you trade a pick this year you're supposed to get 1 round higher next year or two picks.

This is insanity, and further cements that Sweeney is just simply incompetent. How do you trade back a year and get zero for it? How do you give a team a real-time improvement and not demand SOMETHING for the benefit? More troubling, what if SWEENEY instigated the trade, and asked Minnesota to take the pick in return for theirs next year, when the team clearly could benefit from picking someone now?

I am utterly stupefied by this. Sweeney has no common sense or business acumen, and this means that Jacobs and Neely don't either, or that they simply don't care.

This trade of picks is almost more shocking than any of the personnel picks, if it's simply a swap of years. One can question talent evaluation, it's subjective and who knows what the real results will be. But this move is even more base, it reveals foolishness and total ignorance.

It is like he is trolling the fans as this point.  Has this type of trade ever happened outside of perhaps the NBA where draft picks are largely worthless.
I can't think of a single time a team traded a pick and likely ended up with a worse pick a year out.

Just when you think Sweeney can't do something stupider he finds away to top himself.  Fully expecting him to go all in during UFA since this class is an abomination.

Wait that pick trade happened? I though people were joking

When was the last time a GM made 4 separate moves that 95% of all fans thought were bat shit insane?
1. Douggie traded for midling picks
2. McQuaid 4yr contract
3. picking at 15 a guy rated in the 40s when you have two more picks in the high 30s/low 40s
4. Trading a pick this year for the same round next year with a playoff team and not getting anything else in return

I remember being petrified that Milbury was being considered for GM, hindsight being 20/20 I think I would prefer him.

There is no excuse trading a pick this year for a likely worse pick next year. How can that happen?

Is there anyone out there that can make this pick trade make some kind of sense?

Beyond DS being a fuckwit, I mean.

I'd like to nominate the New Jersey Devils for the second worst draft day for an NHL team in 2015.  They had three picks in the first 42....#6, #41 and #42 which put them in a great position to pick up three good young players in the deepest draft in over a decade.  They needed fast, skill players desperately.

They didn't try to move up to get one of the Top Five Can't Miss studs at the top of the draft.  They stayed put at 6 and took one of the riskiest players in the first round ...Pavel Zacha.  They probably think he's another Bobby Holik but he could easily be a bust. He's been suspended a couple of times, his work ethic is questionable and his hockey sense is rated low.  He's currently a center but he'll probably end up as a winger because all he seems to want to do is skate straight ahead as fast as he can and bull past people. Probably something that won't work as well in the NHL.  Call me weird but I prefer players with good work ethics and high hockey IQs.

They traded their #41 pick (and a third-rounder in 2016) for Kyle Palmeiri of the Ducks.  I watched a few of the Ducks postseason games and Palmeiri stuck out for me as the "guy the Ducks will most want to get rid of in the offseason."  He seemed to make mistakes and be a tad behind the play.  Perfect for the Devils who currently have the slowest team in the league.  Can't get a guy who'll make Patrik Elias and Dainius Zubrus look even slower than they actually are.  Palmeiri had 14 goals last year.  Again, a perfect fit.

With the #42 pick, they took a goalie.

In the end, they ended up with only five picks in the richest draft in over a decade.  Let's hear it for Bruins who saved the Devils from being the "what the fuck are they doing" team for the 2015 draft.  We'll beat you to the bottom!

Its hard to give the Bruins credit with all that happened but it seems strange to call out the Devils for only making five picks in a deep draft when that is almost an exact opposite of what the Bruins did.

This just proves that there are many ways to screw up a draft.
